I make a habit of hitting up the News Room for dinner at least every few months, because the menu is diverse and well-thought out.
It was interesting being there this week, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic: There were still a few folks coming in, but I've never been there when it was that quiet: The staff, as per usual, were very friendly. They explained that they were spacing the parties out throughout the restaurant to minimize risk to anyone. The drinks were great, the food was wonderful and perfectly prepared.
Great atmosphere and fun for a crowd! Would go again.
The News Room was great about accommodating our large group of 12 people. I made the reservation only one day prior and they were still able to take our large group.
Even with the group size, the service was great and the food came out quickly. I was impressed and it made a great impression on my team.
The staff was great, but I ordered a steak medium rare and had to send it back twice due to being overcooked. The second time it was worse than the first, with one side burned. I changed my order to the tortellini and it was good. The manager didn't charge for the meal, which was good.
It was a little dark to read menu.
Service and food were good
Also appreciated that the restaurant called to confirm reservation.
Good place to eat if you are doing something downtown Minneapolis. The food is good
The service is usually good. Usually not to busy.
It is with a heavy heart that I post this 1 star review. First, I want to say that my wife and I are HUGE fans of the other restaurants by this group...The Turf Room, The Saddle Room and Hardware are all amazing places to eat with exceptional ambiance and service. We frequent the Saddle room. We find ourselves there at least 2-3 times per month. We have always been delighted each time we tried a new place from this group. The News Room was the exception. We arrived at 10pm on Friday night. The place was dead, which was alarming in and of itself. We were greeted after standing at the front for a minute or 2. Once we were taken to our table we both realized a foul smell. It smelled like dirty mop water. We waited a while for a server. I then watched the bartender climb on the floor to exit the bar...hands on the floor and all. When he came back to get behind thew bar again, he did it the same way...hands on the floor. Disgusting. Had I already not ordered drinks we would have left immediately. Although I didn't dare turn around as I did not want to watch the bartender make my drink with his filthy hands. Also, a "key" ingredient to the martinis from this restaurant group is some of the theatrics. The drinks are usually shaken vigorously table side and then pours right to the brim, forming a meniscus that warrants the consumer to lean forward and sip the 1st few drinks from the glass. The News Room also lacked in this department with a lackluster shaking performance and a drink that was not full by Turf Room or Saddle Room standards. Overall, it was a huge disappointment. We left with our bottle of wine and ate our dinner at a cleaner establishment that really seemed like they wanted and cared about our business.
The meal was great and we love the ambiance there sitting at the bar! The steak was one of the more tender ones I have had and the meal was delicious as stated at the beginning!
yummy food :-) great service
All was good
We went to The Newsroom for Valentines dinner. We had Kevin as our server and he was awesome! Our meal(s) were delicious. We had the Beet Salad (excellent) and the Meatloaf flight... all good. Such amazing pairings.
Food was great as always but the service was slower than normal. It certainly may have just been one of those nights, so I will certainly be back, but one strike is on the board.
Went there for an early dinner before the Valentine's Day rush hit. The ambiance is incredible as they sat us at a cozy table by the window where we could view the city bustle from the comfort of our personal nook. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We took every reccomendation that was given and we were never displeased. The Brie cheese curds with the blueberry compote were to die for! Cocktails were novel, crisp, and delicious. I highly recommend the peanut butter and jelly old fashion. The main courses were delightful. I had the Bouillabaisse over fresh polenta special and my significant other had the Reuben sandwich where the sauerkraut was made from, get this, fennel! Such an amazing meal was brought to a close by the delicious flavorings of the rootbeer cookies. We were amazed and completely satisfied with our experience. Definitely found our new favorite restaurant! If you want a classy delicious dinner that won't break the bank, with incredible ambiance and a spectacular wait staff, then The News Room is for you!
The sweet potato risotto with beef spare rib didn't seem to be prepared very well. The risotto was runny and the beef seemed overdone and small to me. The chocolate torte was a cold hunk and could have used some warming. The best part was the creamy ginger carrot soup. The server seemed in a rush.
Great spot for a pre-theater or sporting event dinner. Outstanding service. Food was great, served hot and was not overly salty. We'll be back,
Awesome place for late night dining! I had been staying in Minneapolis but left for a concert in St Paul. When I returned late to the hotel most places around were no longer serving food. I found the Newsroom and found it was serving food and not just burgers and bar food. I ordered the salmon dinner and it was fabulous. I also got a side of asparagus but the salmon already came with beans and potatos so I had way more food than I could begin to eat. It was all cooked well and had wonderful flavor. I will certainly be back during future stays.
We were really impressed by the menu and the food. The chef is really creative and talented. The restaurant has a casual vibe but the food was of fine dining level. What we didn’t like was that, although we were a couple with reservation, they placed us in the least quaint, noisiest room, with large group parties, tons of TVs and noise. The front and back rooms, which had plenty of tables available, would have been a much better experience. Still, we definitely recommend the place for grabbing dinner before going to MN Orchestra since it’s only a block away. Delicious food, easy to make a reservation, fair priced, and great service!
The restaurant was very quiet so we had a chance to have a good business discussion without shouting.
Food was good, wide variety for vegetarians and steak-lovers alike.
Service was very slow for so few customers in the restaurant
Great drink selections. Great food. Great service. We've already decided that we will be going back again.
Excellent food and our waiter was just great. Very attentive and accommodating.
Amazing food, some of the best I’ve had! The Brie cures and coffee burger are incredible, as was our waiter.
Food & service was excellent!
Great place to meet socially with friends or a quiet dinner with loved ones.
This is our second outing as a group and the food and staff were great! I have celiac and am so thankful to find a nice restaurant that is accommodating to my food needs. Great food and awesome staff!
Great service and excellent food.
We had a large group of 15 for a business meal. Server was fantastic and everyone was extremely satisfied with their meal and dining experience. Will definitely recommend for any size group. Very fun atmosphere:)
Food was fantastic. I had tortellini. More chicken than I expected. Sauce was excellent. Someone in my group ordered duck fried rice and it was delicious as well. Maple bacon old fashioned was a good choice for cold winter night. Great service from our attentive server. All around winner!
An excellent option for downtown dining, with an expansive menu and cocktail list.
I've found a new favorite place. The service was a bit slow--we were placed next to a party of about 8-10 who weren't quiet and were being served by our server, the noise level in general was a bit loud for our taste, and the bar was running slow, but the food was terrific!
Love this place. Great gluten free options. Coffee burger is the best!
Disappointing. We had theater tickets for 8:00 PM. Made reservations for 6:15 which should have been plenty of time. Took more than an hour to get our food. Much too long and we cut it close for our 8:00 play.
Very busy. Our server was swamped. Still no reason to not check on us, ask to refill drinks, water, etc. we had to wave her down to ask for refills, to bring salt and pepper, to check on the long wait for our food and finally for the the check. We ordered a
flatbread, Caesar salad and burger.
When the bill came, we were charged for an entree salad rather than the side salad we thought we’d ordered. Flagged down the server and questioned her since the salad was several dollars more than expected. We didn’t realize there were 2 different Caesar salads on the menu. Instead of adjusting the bill, our server just shrugged, said we got what we had ordered and walked away.
Overall a disappointing dining experience.
Seated and waited 10 minutes and nobody acknowledged us. Our server did not know it was his table. Had to go to the check in desk to get service. Definitely short staffed. Gave our drink order and food order at the same time. Over 10 minutes to get our drinks and another 30 minutes before the food arrived.
They did comp our drinks.
The food was way overpriced for the quality. I paid $60 for a very tough 6-oz filet that had no flavor, 3 scallops that were meh, and potatoes that were salty enough to raise anyone's blood pressure by 10 points. That said, the ambiance was good, as was the service. If they got a halfway decent chef, this would be a stellar place!
Loved every part of this place. Drinks were generous and food was amazing
Our food was not hot and thus unappealing. We needed to go to a show so did not have time to reorder
Don’t expect too much here. Waitress not willing to make dietary modifications for us and was all by the book. Read your newspaper menu and order at your own risk.
Great spot for dinner prior to a show at the Orpheum. Short walk and service was awesome. Waitress was very attentive. Food was awesome.
What a good restaurant! There were some customers in the restaurant and it wasn’t so bad at all. Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic.
Thanksgiving. Very enjoyable and will do this again.
We went for Thanksgiving dinner. We were not impressed with the food. The food was cold and there was a strange spice to some of the side items. Overall, the place is nice and the service was good. We were not impressed by the food.
