The Mustard Seed Ratings and Reviews
This place was once one of the best restaurants in the area, but it has been on the decline for a while. It was about half full on this occasion, on a performance night at the nearby Mondavi Centet for the Performing Arts, when the better restaurants in town are all packed. That says it all.
We've been going to this restaurant for decades but have been increasingly unhappy with our experiences after new owners took it over some years ago. We have very very few nice, charming and quiet restaurants in our town so if you want to visit with family and friends in a lovely, cozy atmosphere this is the best place, physically. The menu has stayed mainly the same but the prices have risen for the meals, which is understandable, although not always justified in my opinion. Focaccia bread, a bowl of olives and a hearty serving of an herby spread use to be complementary. Now it's $1 for four half slices of bread with a small amount of the spread, no olives. My main gripe is that the wine prices have gone sky high and are out of proportion to the price of the food and for the clientele. There is a lone bottle or two of wine in the upper $30 price, more in the mid to upper $40 range and on up to ~$350 range. Corkage is a very high $18. This alone deters us from enjoying dinner at this restaurant more frequently. Dinner for four, with each of us having salad or soup and a main, plus just one dessert to share and the $18 corkage fee was just over $200, pre-tax and pre-tip. I still would recommend, especially those with a hardy budget, but with some hesitation.
We like the Mustard Seed in Davis as being one of the only restaurants in Town that doesn't feel over-catered to students, with a pleasant atmosphere,and pretty good food.
But we are a bit disappointed in the food. It is good but not creative or spectacular. I had sea bass which was rather bland, very slightly fishy, and would have benefited by some slight garnish. The veggies were fresh but very plain, nothing unusual.
We want Mustard Seed to survive and prosper and will continue to dine there, but wish the economics could find a way to bump up the creativity a notch.
I have been here several times which is why I made this New Year's Eve reservation. It's a small, intimate, home converted to a restaurant. Great ambiance; almost always quiet. The setting is great, the service has always been good, the food has always been good (until tonight) but the knock on Mustard Seed has always been that they're way too expensive ... and they are.
Tonight, my food was the problem. One in a party of four. I ordered the rack of lamb to be done medium. It came very rare...I sent it back and it was returned warm but the same, red, not even pink. When I told the Server, she offered to take it back yet again. I asked why? Because of the entre' not being done properly, they compted my dessert. When our Server showed the Chef the lamb, he said it never should have happened. I appreciate their honesty and their sharing it with me. The other three in the party were satisfied with their meals but all agreed it was far too expensive. Including tip (and an $18.00 corkage fee for 1 bottle of wine!) the check for two of us was $180.00. So, do I recommend it? I said 'yes' and there's no question, it's a nice little place. It's usually quiet and was that night until a loud party of four (New Year's Eve, remember) were seated next to us. It was annoying but we were close to being finished. So, no guarantee about quiet, and it depends on the occasion and how much you're willing to spend on it. So, it's a very qualified 'yes'.
Having had many evening meals at Mustard Seed I am very familiar with their menu and delight every visit in the choices, some of which I find I gravitate towards every time, knowing they will be perfectly prepared and served. The service is exemplary, the wines lovely and the atmosphere and general ambiance are both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. It is my go to place in Davis.
This is one of our favorite places. We booked a reservation for 6:30 pm on a Saturday night and decided to sit on the patio that was enclosed and heated. Our server Esther discussed the menu and wine list with us. I ordered the Sea Scallops, and my date chose the Sea Bass. Both were excellent as was the wine.
Very nice meal overall. Pear salad and French onion soup were quite good. Lamb was very tasty and well-prepared. Scallops were ok, but not real flavorful. Service very efficient and the restaurant is quite cozy and inviting. Prices are high. Enjoyed our evening and will return
I haven't been to Mustard Seed in years and am delighted to report that it is still just as outstanding as it was "long" ago! The food - French Onion Soup and Shrimp Louie - were outstanding and the desserts - Chocolate Bread Pudding and Pumpkin Creme Brulee - were ok. The Chocolate Bread Pudding was probably the best I've ever had. The Brulee had no flavor and was a disappointment - it sounded so good! My friend and I had a leisurely lunch - 2 and a half hours - and never felt rushed by the server. The atmosphere is quiet so we could hear ourselves talk. Over all, it was a wonderful event and lunch!
With such lovely atmosphere and service you would think this would be a great place for lunch. Unfortunately the food was definitely below average. The chicken in my Chinese chicken salad was very tough and not tasty. It’s a shame because this restaurant has so much going for it. Get the kitchen back on track.
The food was amazing and the service was excellent. We sat outside which was lovely, but I don't know if it was loud inside or not. We had the salmon carpaccio for an appetizer which was quite yummy. My husband had rib eye which was melt-in-your mouth delicious. My daughter had the Langostino gnocci, which was amazing. I had a the Autumn salad and the french onion soup, both fantastic. We split the pumpkin Creme Brulee for dessert. I gave it only 4/5 stars for value because it's a bit expensive, but I would not hesitate to go back.
It has been a few years since I have had the joy of dining at The Mustard Seed. Always charming, always interesting, creative menu choices, using local produce. The restaurant has changed ownership since I last dined there. Service was good but not great. I thought the patio dining area felt a little unkempt with unused tables kind of shoved together, all tables bare (no vase of flowers, no salt and pepper, no place settings until after we were seated). It just felt a bit thrown together and unwelcoming. The food still was good and the atmosphere quiet enough to visit. Try the grilled-cheese eggs Benedict! Very good and the poached eggs perfectly done (I asked for medium).
Enjoyed our first-time experience at the Mustard Seed. Would have loved to have eaten outdoors but there was some construction work noise on an adjoining establishment, which was initially creating difficulty with conversations to be heard. An indoor cozy atmosphere with a very attentive waitperson added to our experience. Both the shrimp louie and cobb salads were delicious. Also the apple gratin with a dollop of vanilla ice cream were yummy.
Next time will try their much touted bread pudding. Am looking forward to going again and would highly recommend.
A woman friend mentioned that she'd never dined here, so I reserved a table for a Thursday evening at 7:30 pm. I prefer the outside patio, but it was too cold. My friend commented on the homey atmosphere as we were seated inside. Our server Caroline answered our questions about the drink and dinner menus. My friend ordered a glass of Turkovich 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon that she really liked. I went with the Hahn 2015 Pinot Noir. Caroline brought us Ciabatta bread with a butter blended with goat cheese and took our orders. My friend chose the French Onion Soup and commented that it didn't have too much sherry as if often the case. Instead of a main course, she went with the Smoked Salmon Carpaccio. I chose a salad with goat cheese, pecans and dried cherries and the Mahi Mahi over Pearl Cous Cous and grilled Ciabatta. We both agreed that the food and service this evening were excellent.
The menu is interesting and provided fine choices. The wine list is well-selected and reasonably priced. The food was perfectly prepared, attractive, and delicious. The waitress was attentive and charming, but did not know about the food or wines, and lacked training or knowledge of protocol. The pleasant patio setting was diminished by the loud-talking, self-aggrandizing party next to us. No solution to that problem or blame to the restaurant for clients that yell about themselves while eating.
