The Mustard Seed always has wonderful food and great service in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere.
My husband and I selected this restaurant for our anniversary, following a movie. We especially enjoyed the ambiance at The Mustard Seed and the service was excellent. I had the rack of lamb which was quite good. For me, the rack of lamb would have been a little better with lighter or no sauce. My husband had the pork which was quiet tender and juicy. We also enjoyed two excellent desserts. I had the profiteroles which had great textures and taste. My husband had the chocolate bread pudding. Excellent! All of the dishes were presented attractively. Overall it was a relaxing and enjoyable evening. We look forward to returning. We would highly recommend this restaurant.
The food and presentation was excellent. It was a little pricey however and portions not very large. I would return
Visiting in Davis and looking for a place to have dinner. Chose because of great reviews on google. Was not disappointed, excellent food & service. Next time in Davis, will definitely return. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Good for a biz meeting
The lamb chops are amazing. The Mustard Seed has long been a favorite restaurant for celebrations.
Food was delicious! We made a reservation for 7:30pm via opentable. We were not seated until 7:55pm and the waitress took our order from the waiting area bench, very odd especially for a place this nice. We were not offered anything to make up for this mistake.
We were celebrating my daughter's birthday and everything was just perfect. Thank you!
Small portions of very good food. Not flexible enough for our special diets.
Their gnocchi with lobster is to die for! For dessert, I had their bread pudding, which was a dream coming true - it was made out of croissants, filled with lovely melted chocolate plus a generous amount of delicious whipped cream. It was amazing! For entré, we also had the lamb and fish with potato croquette. Both were good, but the lobster gnocchi was everyones´favorite. The appetizers (French Onion Soup, Crab Cakes, and Paté with baguette) were fine but if you want to save some money, indulge in the entrés and desserts instead!
I have always liked this restaurant very much, so I expected a great meal for Valentine's Day. However, both the short ribs and lamb were seasoned with overwhelming amounts of rosemary, and the lamb was well done despite requesting it as medium rare. Furthermore the restaurant hiked their prices up considerably, just because it was Valentine's Day. A very disappointing experience.
In my opinion, this is the best restaurant in Davis.
Excellent service. Food tasty. Spacious seating perfect for time with someone special.
The food and service were exemplary! The only problem was being in a small room with two very loud obnoxious women. It’s too bad they couldn’t have toned down their conversation and laughter a bit.
Very good food, well prepared and presented. We would return.
Service was great! The tomato bisque was delicious, but the trout was just okay. We enjoyed the atmosphere and being in downtown Davis!
Mustard Seed is off its game right now. Service still fine, ambience okay. Wasn't happy to have to dine out on the covered patio--I know I reserved late, but they might have warned me. Food--surprisingly mediocre, given their track record or history. Duck both tough and tasteless. Onion soup tasted suspiciously like it came out of a jar. Pate kind of blah. Not bad exactly, but not what it has been or could be. Makes me remember Soga's around the block a few years back when they sold the restaurant and apparently left behind the recipe book while forgetting to leave directions on how to cook it. If this once is typical, then for the moment I'd say Bernardo's around the corner is probably the best in Davis.
Afterthought: excellent glass of pinot, though.
The Mustard Seed is our "go-to" spot for pre-Mondavi concert dining. The food is always outstanding at Mustard Seed, and the service is solid (very friendly staff). The last few times, we have been seated in the outside area, which in winter time is enclosed, with heaters.
Wonderful....best restaurant in Davis...no need to say more
Great local place serving fantastic ingredients and creative cuisine. Highly recommended.
I have enjoyed several meals at Mustard Seed. They are consistent in their good service and excellent food .
This place was once one of the best restaurants in the area, but it has been on the decline for a while. It was about half full on this occasion, on a performance night at the nearby Mondavi Centet for the Performing Arts, when the better restaurants in town are all packed. That says it all.
We've been going to this restaurant for decades but have been increasingly unhappy with our experiences after new owners took it over some years ago. We have very very few nice, charming and quiet restaurants in our town so if you want to visit with family and friends in a lovely, cozy atmosphere this is the best place, physically. The menu has stayed mainly the same but the prices have risen for the meals, which is understandable, although not always justified in my opinion. Focaccia bread, a bowl of olives and a hearty serving of an herby spread use to be complementary. Now it's $1 for four half slices of bread with a small amount of the spread, no olives. My main gripe is that the wine prices have gone sky high and are out of proportion to the price of the food and for the clientele. There is a lone bottle or two of wine in the upper $30 price, more in the mid to upper $40 range and on up to ~$350 range. Corkage is a very high $18. This alone deters us from enjoying dinner at this restaurant more frequently. Dinner for four, with each of us having salad or soup and a main, plus just one dessert to share and the $18 corkage fee was just over $200, pre-tax and pre-tip. I still would recommend, especially those with a hardy budget, but with some hesitation.
We like the Mustard Seed in Davis as being one of the only restaurants in Town that doesn't feel over-catered to students, with a pleasant atmosphere, and pretty good food.
But we are a bit disappointed in the food. It is good but not creative or spectacular. I had sea bass which was rather bland, very slightly fishy, and would have benefited by some slight garnish. The veggies were fresh but very plain, nothing unusual.
We want Mustard Seed to survive and prosper and will continue to dine there, but wish the economics could find a way to bump up the creativity a notch.
Mustard Seed is a favorite of our family. New Years Eve plus a Birthday we were there. Food and service great but we ate on the patio and have to admit it gets cold - particularly floor - even though very good heaters
I have been here several times which is why I made this New Year's Eve reservation. It's a small, intimate, home converted to a restaurant. Great ambiance; almost always quiet. The setting is great, the service has always been good, the food has always been good (until tonight) but the knock on Mustard Seed has always been that they're way too expensive ... and they are.
Tonight, my food was the problem. One in a party of four. I ordered the rack of lamb to be done medium. It came very rare...I sent it back and it was returned warm but the same, red, not even pink. When I told the Server, she offered to take it back yet again. I asked why? Because of the entre' not being done properly, they compted my dessert. When our Server showed the Chef the lamb, he said it never should have happened. I appreciate their honesty and their sharing it with me. The other three in the party were satisfied with their meals but all agreed it was far too expensive. Including tip (and an $18.00 corkage fee for 1 bottle of wine!) the check for two of us was $180.00. So, do I recommend it? I said 'yes' and there's no question, it's a nice little place. It's usually quiet and was that night until a loud party of four (New Year's Eve, remember) were seated next to us. It was annoying but we were close to being finished. So, no guarantee about quiet, and it depends on the occasion and how much you're willing to spend on it. So, it's a very qualified 'yes'.
We headed to Mustard Seed on Christmas Eve. It was chilly and I was looking for a warming meal. I started with the tomato soup, which did the trick!
There is a nice selection of wine by the glass to accompany any menu choice.
Love this place. My favorite in all of David
Nice place. Nice people. Delicious.
Everything was wonderful. We got there at opening time and it was a bit chilly
The Mustard Seed remains a very good steady place for fine food, warm friendly well-informed staff and interesting delicious menu selections; cozy intimate atmosphere, not noisy. It is for adults!
What a lovely spot! Everything was handled very professionally. They even called us to say we'd left a book at the table! Food was excellent. The wait staff very good.
Having had many evening meals at Mustard Seed I am very familiar with their menu and delight every visit in the choices, some of which I find I gravitate towards every time, knowing they will be perfectly prepared and served. The service is exemplary, the wines lovely and the atmosphere and general ambiance are both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. It is my go to place in Davis.
We had tix to the mondavi center, and we had arrived late due to traffic. The server made sure we were done in plenty of time without feeling like we were rushed. The food was great; nice wine list. Will definitely return.
This is one of our favorite places. We booked a reservation for 6:30 pm on a Saturday night and decided to sit on the patio that was enclosed and heated. Our server Esther discussed the menu and wine list with us. I ordered the Sea Scallops, and my date chose the Sea Bass. Both were excellent as was the wine.
We love this place! Excellent food... especially the desserts. Quite pricey but worth the extra money.
Great experience, minor problem with the background music being inaudible in the outdoor setting
Very nice meal overall. Pear salad and French onion soup were quite good. Lamb was very tasty and well-prepared. Scallops were ok, but not real flavorful. Service very efficient and the restaurant is quite cozy and inviting. Prices are high. Enjoyed our evening and will return
Ever single bite was absolutely phenomenal! It was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I could not give it a higher recommendation.
Second visit and look forward to my third, fourth etc. Highly recommend this gem.
I haven't been to Mustard Seed in years and am delighted to report that it is still just as outstanding as it was "long" ago! The food - French Onion Soup and Shrimp Louie - were outstanding and the desserts - Chocolate Bread Pudding and Pumpkin Creme Brulee - were ok. The Chocolate Bread Pudding was probably the best I've ever had. The Brulee had no flavor and was a disappointment - it sounded so good! My friend and I had a leisurely lunch - 2 and a half hours - and never felt rushed by the server. The atmosphere is quiet so we could hear ourselves talk. Over all, it was a wonderful event and lunch!
