About The Musket Room

The Musket Room brings the spirit of New Zealand and the country’s diverse cuisine to Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood. Chef and owner Matt Lambert, a New Zealand native, created a menu that charts the evolution of New Zealand cuisine, from the country’s Old World traditions and Asian influences to its modern day dedication to local and seasonal offerings.

Inspired by an era in New Zealand when adventure and discovery blossomed, The Musket Room offers a modern approach to the country’s culinary past, serving dinner and drinks.

Reservations made through Opentable will secure you a reservation in either the main dining room or garden room, where we offer both a la carte and the short and long story tasting menus. Tasting menus must be booked in advance. Please let us know if you or any of your guests have a allergy or dietary restrictions. We can accommodate for vegetarians with our short story tasting menu only and al a carte for vegan diners with 24hr notice.

I knew we were in for an expensive evening but the price point in no way reflected the value of the service or the taste of the food. There are about 50 other restaurants in New York City at this price point and below we could have experienced that would have blown us away where instead the musket room couldn’t even get the ball out of the barrel.

My fiancé and I sat here for the 11 course tasting. A few of the dishes were great but most fell into the bad or mediocre category. I would stay away from all of the cold dishes. Better yet, if our experience is indicative of this place I would stay away from the restaurant.

The service was horrible. Maybe it was because it was the week before thanksgiving and their A players were away. First it took nearly half an hour to be seated for our reservation despite multiple empty tables within sight. To add insult to injury, there was no clear place to stand so we were made to fell like we were in the way by the staff scooting around us. It took another half an hour after being seated with our menus closed for our orders to be taken. The waiter didn’t seem too pleased that we selected the longer of the two menus. During our wait, multiple glasses were shattered around us by the wait staff.

The only rdeeming aspect of the service was the sommelier Brett who shared colorful stories and selected excellent wine. What a gem, I’m sure some better restaurant will scoop him up soon enough.

Overall experience at The Musket Room was wonderful. I would absolutely return on another special occasion or date. I've never had the chance to taste New Zealand cuisine before, so the flavors here were often new combinations. We had the short story tasting menu, and I left feeling just satisfied enough with the amount of food given. Service was attentive throughout the meal, not intrusive, and informative. The setup and ambiance of the restaurant was my favorite. It's just dark enough to be a cozy spot for a date, you can have a conversation privately enough without feeling like you have to yell over the volume of other tables, and the spacing of tables is just right so you don't feel crowded.

Great little place in a fantastic neighbourhood. Not far from great comedy and Jazz shows. The menu is amazing and also lots of NZ wine to choose from.

it was a lovely experience -- exquisite presentation, some unexpected combination of flavors, and nice portions -- but the sauces were a bit on the salty side. still unsure what was new zealand about the meal other than some of the main ingredients.

This was one of our best dining experiences in NYC. We were late by over half hour, and only had about 45 minute to finish the meal as we had to pick up our son from his practice. The restaurant kept our reservation, sat us down immediately and served us their awesome tasting menu so quickly and professionally that we were completely blown away. Food was great, service excellent (very friendly, and natural). We will be back 100%!

Felt like servers were on the clock and just spewing out the dish names without explain. And it used to be better when all they served was wine from New Zealand:(

I felt that the Person cooking and presenting the dishes was more of an artist then a chef! I wasn't wowed by the food! My husband and I partake in tastings all over Manhattan and this restaurant is on our Do not return list.....not one dish was good enough to come back for! But the atmosphere was quite special and the Staff was very attentive! I caught one of the managers pouring some of our wine for himself which was completely inappropriate....he said he wanted to make sure it was OK since it wasn't a corked bottle but a screw top...well the time to do that is when you open and smell and then have a small taste while at our table! Not halfway into our bottle you go pour yourself a few inches of our wine and down it! WHO DOES THAT???

As a Kiwi visiting New York for the weekend, I was very keen to try this must talked about restaurant. The food was amazing- a taste sensation & portions not too big. Amazing wines & great service. I was meeting a girlfriend that I had not seen for 12mths, so lots to catch up on. Although the restaurant vibe was energetic, we could still have a great '3 hour' conversation. I'll be recommending this to everyone!

We went for my birthday and we're not disappointed. Beautiful restaurant with what I would normally say is outstanding food. I am pregnant right now so my tastes are particularly picky but my husband was completely blown away with every bite. Attentive wait staff, friendly owners, perfect evening.

one of the worst dining experiences. Way over-priced, esp. the wine list. A retail bottle for 20.00 goes for 72.00 on the list. Outrageous. Size of appetizers is a joke....Wines glasses were lifted off the table before we had a chance to decide to have wine or not...had drinks first before appetizers...and drinks took a verity long time in coming. A most unpleasant experience.

I seek out The Musket Room each time I am in NYC, and I have had the honor of introducing several friends to this favorite restaurant. Barbara and TMR team go out of their way to make you feel special, and everyone is genuinely knowledgeable and proud of the menu offerings.

This visit we opted for the short story tasting menu with standard wine pairings, and it was as much of a treat for the eyes as it was for the tastebuds. Chef Matt Lambert's New Zealand heritage shines through in both the menu and the wine selections, a delicious tribute to his home country.

This is a small detail, but the Atelier Cologne candles in the bathrooms are the reason for a small obsession I have with the french perfumerie.

Every detail at The Musket Room is thought through, and the restaurant more than exceeds its one star Michelin rating. Cheers to much future success for this team.

My wife and I have been to Aotearoa three times for months on end and we choose The Musket Room, not only for it's beautifully prepared food but also because we feel nostalgic for that faraway, magical country. The brilliant chef, Matt Lambert (@musketmatt on IG) brings together amazing ingredients, synthesizing them with with what we recognized from our trips as that special, creative Kiwi flair. The NZ red deer is perfectly cooked and amazing, the manuka smoked scallops are served in a domed cloud of honey-laced steam, the hangi potatoes with and egg and caviar are a flavor-rich treasure. And, they have a great selection of NZ wine and even NZ whisky! Honestly, this is our favorite restaurant in NYC and is a must for anyone who is even tinkering with the idea of a special meal.
