I was so disappointed in my dining experience at The Mooring. I booked a reservation here after reading the excellent reviews, and I completely regret it! The service was awful! Our waiter took so long to take our drink orders, and when he finally did, it took 20 minutes to get our cocktails to the table. We ordered food and slowly sipped, and our waiter never stopped by to check on us! We had to flag him down (30 minutes after we finished our drinks) and he had the nerve to come by and not offer us refills! On top of that, my father ordered a medium filet mignon, and it came out looking like it was thrown into a wildfire! Literally cracked on the top with peaks of ash like a used charcoal briquette. Lastly, it was hot! Our little table was stuck in the corner with no air circulation... ugh! We saw some people having a great time, enjoying good service and food. Our experience was awful and we will never go back again. There are too many fabulous restaurants in Newport to take the risk. This place bites!

We ate out each night at different [comparable] venues. The Mooring Restaurant was the best.

The service was very good but food took a very long time to come out of the kitchen. Manager came over to apologize and took the appetizers off our bill, which I thought was fair. Food was good, so would definitely recommend and go back!

Our server never greeted the table and we had to ask another waitstaff for water and drink menus. Other tables seated after us had already been waited upon. Once drinks were delivered, she never came back to check on refills and ultimately our meals were served without the appetizers (oysters) and soups prior to the meal. The manager removed the soups and oysters off the bill but the entire meal was ruined. The server never apologized or acknowledge her mistake. Very disappointing. With the many quality restaurants available in the area, we will never return back to The Mooring.

Our dinner was very good. We requested a table with a view and were waterfront. There is a good selection and the presentation very unique. Busy restaurant so food is a bit slow coming out. Overall a very good experience.

We came here for my husband's 30th birthday with a group of 4 of us. We did make reservations (I highly recommend), as it was really busy. We sat out on the deck - it was a beautiful summer night. The drinks and food were delicious! Highly recommend the raw bar and filet. We will definitely be back!

So happy we decided to spend our Anniversary here. The staff, service, and food were all amazing! I was so excited that they also have a gluten free menu, too! What a treat! Can’t wait to go back! This place is a 10! Enjoy!

Fabulous! Except we had a table of 10 young men (30’s) celebrating something and they were rowdy and loud. Good point we had a great waitress and the manager was great!!!

Went on a Friday night for dinner. The food was amazing and reasonably priced. Only complaint was the wait time for the food (about an hour) and we weren't offered any extra bread while waiting

The Mooring is our favorite place in Newport. The food is great, especially the Seafood Pasta which three in our party ordered. This time, though, the scallops were gritty, a couple quite a bit so that they were inedible. Very disappointing that they weren't cleaned better. We've had this dish several times and have never run into this before. Should have sent them back, but didn't. Otherwise, a really nice evening. Great appetizers, drinks, and desserts. Our waitress, Jenn, was terrific.

Love the uptown salad. Why did you change a good thing? Smaller salmon portion not worth the price change. Sarah an awesome server. Nonetheless this is still one of my favorite places to dine. Thank you

From the Hostess to the waitress, via girl and manager...everyone was pleasant and attentitive.
The wait staff was very atte tive to any allergy concerns customers had. While I could not enjoy my steak flame grilled it was just as delicious cooked in a skillet!
I would go back to.borrow if I were still in town!

We had a wonderful dinner tonight celebrating my husband’s birthday along with our 2 sons! I had requested a table with a view and we got it! It was a perfect spot with a fantastic view!
The food was equally fantastic and served promptly! My husband and one son had the Portuguese cod which they said was excellent! Our other son had the flounder & I had the scallops also very good! When we ordered dessert ...my husband’s key lime tart was served with a candle! We had a wonderful experience and would go back again!

Food good, but be prepared to wait. We were seated within 5 minutes of our 6:30 pm reservation on a Tuesday night in mid-July, but did not get entrees until 1 hour later. Many large parties dining.

To be honest, it was a bit of a disappointment. The kids’ meals were best value. Had to ask 3 times for more bread. Chowder yummy but just barely warm. Potatoes lukewarm. Filet a bit chewy. Husband’s had to sent back. Too rare. Puddles all over table from sweating drinks without coasters. Very loud! Sadly...will not return.

Anniversary dinner on our first visit to Newport. Everything was outstanding as predicted by previous reviews. We agreed that the Bag of Donuts appetizer might have been the best appetizer we’ve ever had in our 34 years. Very appreciative of The Mooring on our special day.

The fish & chips were extremely greasy.. my salad w/ 1/2 of a very small lobster tail was supposed to some w/ some scallops, which it did not...some of the salad was wilted. Every expense... not worth it!

For 15, yes, that's right, 15 years, we have been going in the summer to Newport for its friendly and sophisticated vibe. Well since the beginning we have had at least one meal here at the Mooring and sometimes said meals were among the best dishes we've ever experienced. Not anymore. It was obvious to us the chef or ownership had changed right from the beginning when the hostess, upon arriving early, dismissed us, telling us we couldn't sit down, we had to leave and return at the appointed time for our table. This would never have happened to us in the old days. The food although cooked decently, lacked the startling originality and creativity that was a hallmark of the previous chef. Although some of the dishes are the same on the menu (seafood pasta, bag o' doughnuts, etc.) they are not made the same way. Service was not as good as in the past either, predictably. With great sadness and regret we have to abandon this restaurant: RIP... Oh well, there's so many others in Newport.

For the ultimate Newport experience a visit to the Mooring is a must. We had an outside table and situated on the harbor made watching the boats go by wonderful entertainment while eating a memorable meal. Start with the Lobster& shrimp fritters with chipotle-maple aioli. Such an indulgence! Then the chopped salad with fingerling potatoes, sunflower seeds, sprouts, oranges bacon and feta in an orange-buttermilk dressing was delicious. We enjoyed the special of the day, halibut that was so flavorful! Also, the grilled shrimp on a hoagie with radish sprout, pickled cucumber and hot pepper honey and herb aioli was yummy. Our server Denise was outstanding! So friendly, with great recommendations from the menu! Even the coffee was delicious presented in a french press. Looking forward to trying everything else on the menu on our future visits!

After an earlier visit here (you can read my other review) we decided to give it another try the following evening out of sentimental nostalgia. It was good, but not as great as in the past, though admittedly we stuck to such simple dishes as burgers and fish 'n' chips so as not to test the kitchen. Had I known the chef changed I wouldn't have reserved. We won't be coming back anymore... so sad to mourn the passing of one of our all-time favourite restaurants ever, as a family, in the United States.

Four stars for service only because it was sooooo busy! We made reservations early in the week and to our pleasant surprise we were seated exactly at our requested time - outside just as we had asked. The food was outstanding and we had such a great time. Have dined here 3 times before and will continue to do so every visit to Newport. (Also: kudos to the manager on the night we were there (7/6/18). There was a highly intoxicated guest at the table next to us and the manager kept and eye on things without being invasive - very discrete. The wait staff was great too! Nice job!).

unfortunatey just another tourist trap in Newport. It’s sad that they try to play it off as “fine dining”. My wife and I were hoping it would be at least good but it wasn’t. If the prices were 25% less then it would have been fine. The seafood risotto was supposed to be in a lobster sauce. It was basically tomato juice. My wife’s scallops were over a “tomato-basil” sauce. Again it was basically tomato juice. The fig-prosciutto flatbread and the raw oysters were great. Lastly which just shows that it’s a tourist trap is the waitstaff dropped a glass while moving a table behind me. I felt some shards hit my back. I was completely fine and got up and moved my chair and my daughters chair out of the way and informed the waitstaff that I felt it hit me and they should sweep under our table because the glass had come that far over. They were apologetic and the manager came by and asked if I was fine. I said I was and he asked again if I was sure and I said yes. Having grown up in a family that owned a restaurant, owning a restaurant of my own, and my family still having a restaurant, you at a minimum comp the drinks or the one dessert we ordered or take 5-10% off. They didn’t comp anything.
