The Mooring Restaurant
Amazing food! I highly recommend the "Portobello Blackbean Burger" if you are or prefer a vegetarian option! Its absolutely divine! This is one of my mothers and I's favorite restaurants and each time we can't resist ordering the "Bag of Doughnuts", they are amazing and I'd personally try and make a meal out of them! In terms of waitstaff, I would say they could be a slight bit more attentive. We waited about 15minutes post finishing our meal to even spot our server to request our check. Other than that, amazing ambiance despite the dining popularity chatter!
Great time and great food. Matt the bartender is great! Very knowledgeable and courteous.
We sat out on the deck and I had hopes it would be a great meal. It was very noisy but to be expected - it is a big restaurant and things are hopping on a Saturday night. My date ordered a white Russian and I think they forgot the Kahlua. It was very odd because he had another on earlier at the bar that looked and tasted great. The server did take it off the bill. The service was decent.
The fried calamari appetizer was very good. However, the tuna poke was doused with soy sauce making it too salty and the burrata and arugula salad (although the description sounded appealing) was not good. The arugula looked like it had been warmed - it was limp and tasted gross. The strawberries in the salad were bland. My date had the flank steak and although he enjoyed it, the piece of steak was very small. I don't mind spending money as long as the food is good. In this case it was very overpriced for the quality. I think if I had gone for just a drink and an app, it would have been okay. Would not go back.
Awesome waiter! I love this restaurant! They never overbook or rush you.
Great food with excellent service by Dan
Amazing views from the patio and great food as well! Make sure to get a reservation well in advance.
I was taking my 87 y o neighbor to lunch and they kindly seated her while I found a parking spot.
The food was great.
Our waiter, Timothy, was very good.
So much hype about this being one of the best restaurants in Newport. Our server was great. And employees were all nice. The food was just ok. The place was packed! Obviously, a hot spot. Not sure why.
My fiancée and I both love the food! We ordered raw oysters, chowder, cod and sole.
Waiters are very experienced and professional. Unique and delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts.
What a pleasure, can’t wait for the next opportunity to return for another great meal.
Overall pretty disappointed based on what I was told to expect. I don’t write reviews but this rating questionnaire popped up so I thought I would. Here are the things that bothered me.
1. Literally have 4 seats at the bar inside so if your table isn’t ready (which ours wasn’t) you have to stand in an overly crowded foyer/bar area waiting.
2. Once we sat down, there was a table next to us with two extremely loud, intoxicated guys who dropped probably 25 F Bombs and every other curse word imaginable over a period of 30 minutes they were there. Believe me, I can curse with the best of them, but not in a public restaurant.
3. We had to ask for bread two different times (why this wasn’t automatic really boggles my mind since the bread was really good)
4. I ordered surf and turf and the lobster came completely in the shell without the shell crackers or any butter sauce to dip it in. (Again, isn’t this automatic?) Had to ask for both of those things.
5. The floor of the restaurant wasn’t very clean which really surprised me based on how much the meal cost.
6. For the experience above it is incredibly overpriced. I get that Newport is a pricey place- but that’s fine if you are getting your $ worth. For instance, we had dinner at 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar the night before and spent over $200 for two of us (same as this place) and it was absolutely fantastic!
Overall, it seemed to me that this place packs them in because it has a “reputation” so they are mailing it in and not really concerned with the finer details of making your experience great. I wont be going back. There are too many other great options in Newport!
Had a 6:45 reservation for 4. Upon arrival at the reserved time we were told they were setting the table and it would be a few minutes. After waiting 15 minutes and noticing multiple tables available, I again inquired about our table and we were seated.
Our server arrived shortly after being seated and took cocktail orders. Entrees were ordered, lobster ravioli, mussels, and a stuffed fish. Food was good, not great, pasta was somewhat overdone.
Great location on the wharf, our server was nice, knowledgeable, and attentive without being intrusive. The decor of the restaurant is nautical and tasteful. The selection of apps, raw bar and entrees is varied with selection for everyone.
In general, if your in the area, take a look. There are many selections in Newport to dine. The restaurant in my opinion is average, but that’s just me.
We were heading to Newport for a destination wedding, which also happened to be on the same date as our anniversary so we decided to celebrate by ourselves a day early and booked a table at the Mooring. Now Newport has plenty of choices for dining but we are very glad we choose this restaurant. Even though it is a large establishment the service was like a well oiled machine with prompt seating at a wonderful outside table overlooking the many awesome boat moored in the harbor as the sunset.
Our server was really cool and she knew her stuff and was prompt and checked in on us often. I especially like when you ask for something (like extra lemons for the seafood) they don't forget and bring it right away. Calimari was excellent as was the whole roasted Mexican street corn, which my server brought me a steak knife so I could cut the tender kernels off the cob. My scallops were cooked perfectly but lacked a little pizzaz and my wife enjoyed her salad with blackened salmon.
Very accommodating for special dietary issues.
I had been to the Mooring for the first time about 2 months ago before making a reservation for my boyfriend’s birthday for August 14th. My experience was so great the first time and I loved the ambience of the place so I couldn’t wait to come back. I have to say this time left a little to be desired. Our waitress was nice but you could tell she had too many tables and we just didn’t get the attention we would have liked. We never got a bag of bread despite ordering about $35 in appetizers between the raw bar and hot appetizers. They never cleared our dirty plates from our appetizers so when dinner came out there was no room on the table to put them and the runner spilt some of the hot broth from the Portuguese cod on my boyfriend’s pants (not the runners fault Bc he had no room on the table to drop the food but still...good thing I always have a tide pen!) The food was good but the experience could have been a lot better.
Great food, view and waiter!!!
The Mooring is hit or miss. It’s a Newport institution and I can remember going when I was little and it being consistently delicious. Our service was great, very attentive and friendly. We both ordered the clam chowder, which was great, and decided to share a bunch plates. We split the chopped salad, the mussels and calamari. My friend ordered a lobster claw which she said was good. The salad was average. The mussels were gritty and did not taste fresh. The calamari tasted as if it had been sitting under the heat lamp and arrived soggy. I let the server know about the mussels (figuring that was the worst of the meals) and they graciously deducted it from the bill. Don’t think I would pick the Mooring for a meal. Great spot for drinks and a cup of chowder.
Excellent fresh fish, prepared perfectly, excellent service in a beautiful setting. One minor criticism- I really wish you didn’t feel the need to pump electronic pulse music nonstop on the deck. It is fairly annoying - maybe fine for a bar at 11 pm but a dining deck at 6 pm?
We enjoyed our meal very much. Our server was excellent!
FANTASTIC! One of our new favorite restaurants in Newport!
The bag of donuts was wonderful I can’t believe you don’t get a salad with any entree in Newport. Other enters I get better at home. Plus I had to pay for parking, ouch.
The Mooring is our "go to" place in Newport. We always enjoy the food and sitting outside near the water. We felt sorry for our server. A woman next to us complained about her meal and I think this upset our server, so service was a little uneven. But the food and wine were fantastic. We always enjoy ourselves here.
Food and service was great as always- Love coming here for any occasion all year long
Food was delicious! Lots of options especially GF which I needed. It’s nice to have many choices when dining out and that’s rare for me. Great spot on the docks. Hostess was wonderful- she even stored our stroller for us so it wouldn’t be in the way. Server was ok but I had to ask for a drink refill which is a pretty basic serving skill so I expected more out of a restaurant if this caliber. Either way I would definitely go back!
Sometimes I worry about going to highly rated restaurants in a busy tourist area wondering if I will get value for $$. Even though the Mooring's was highly rated I was pleasantly surprised and very satisfied with the value we received. It was a very busy Sunday night and walk ins had a 2hr wait. Having made a reservation, our wait was reasonable until we were seated. Our waitress was prompt and attentive. We started with 1/2 dozen raw RI oysters and 1/2 dozen cherry-stone clams. They were fresh and delicious without any lost taste due to sitting in fresh water. My wife had the stuffed sole and I had the baked stuffed 1 1/4lb lobster. The sole was perfectly cooked and the seafood stuffing was excellent. My lobster was stuffed with breadcrumbs, but hiding underneath were 3 shrimp sauteed in garlic butter and 3 large scallops; not little pieces among the breadcrumbs as in other stuffed lobsters I have had before. There was no room for dessert so I can't comment. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked beautiful and serving sizes were large.
excellent view/space and service. drinks took a while due to location of wine storage.
attentive service, nice execution of food. Lobster ravioli needed more sauce; quantity of seafood was excellent.
Food had hair
The food was very good and the seafood was very fresh. The waiter was also vey friendly and made every effort to make it a great dining experience. Food was a bit pricey for what it was though, and I thought the restaurant's lighting was a bit dim.
Great service and a memorable evening with our daughter and our nephew from Australia. We were there well past closing but never felt rushed. Very attentive staff and excellent food at a fair price given the high quality. It is our go-to place downtown Newport.
Great server, great food, awesome location!
This is our go to place in Newport. Ambiance is what we are looking for, with delicious food and drink at reasonable prices. We routinely go with our favorites—oysters, calamari, bag o’ donuts (fritter), and fish and chips; and we haven’t been disappointed yet.
Outstanding. Had the tuna in lemongrass broth - delicious - beautiful tuna!
Food and service were both amazing!
Definitely need a reservation! Food was spectacular and service was just as great!
Excellent food, service and ambiance.
We've been to Newport many times and always make it a point to have lunch or dinner at the mooring restaurant. We had a great table out on the back deck overlooking the harbor. The food was amazing, I had a lobster that was cooked perfectly. We had crab cakes and other apps that were great as well. My wife has celiac disease and they did a great job accomodiating her allergy. She had gluten free crab cakes that were delicious!
Our waitress was fantastic! The food was wonderful!
Excellent service, food was very good, and you cannot beat the location, sitting outside watching the sun set over the water while you eat.
Usually our favorite spot. On our last visit the calamari was tasteless and the bag of donuts was more dough than seafood filling with very little flavor. Too bad as those are always are favorite treats. Otherwise, great service and atmosphere.
Great food awesome location one of the best in Newport!
