The Mooring Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Overall it was an OK experience. We sat at our table for a good 5+ minutes before acknowledged which is too long given it was a Monday and not busy. It seemed that everything from getting a drink order, supplying bread and water, and food delivery was very slow. The food was good. We probably will not dine there again though.
The Mooring is the go-to place each year for my friend's birthday celebration-as she is obsessed with their scallop chowder which she seems to go into a trance-like state while eating. I have been to the Mooring during each season- and all seem to offer something unique. We had a blast sitting 'outside' on the deck in December, enjoying the sunshine and ocean waves next to us. Our waitress Colleen was fantastic. I highly recommend it!
We were in Newport for the weekend and went to The Mooring on the recommendation of our innkeeper. The back deck puts you right on the water, although we had limited views in the evening and with the deck buttoned up for winter. Restaurant has a good feel when you arrive. We booked a reservation and were seated immediately. Main dining area was open and inviting. It looks like a great gathering place for friends. We were seated outside on the heated deck. The clam chowder was among the best I’ve had since moving to New England. Fish and chips for equally good. Although I would definitely ddining here again, my enjoyment of this meal was greatly impacted by the fact that we were seated in front of a heating vent for the deck. It was unbearably hot throughout the meal, to the point I wanted to pack food and leave early. I mentioned this to the management staff who stopped by to check on our meal and was told it was difficult to regulate heat on the deck. I’m sure it is, so I would recommend you choose your seat assignment accordingly.
App was burned. My dinner was entered wrong by our server. The wrong dish came out, waited about 15 min for the new one while my company ate. Correct dish came out, fish was over cooked and flavorless. Had really high hopes for this restaurant and was very disappointed.
My husband ordered the Tuna dish medium rare, it came gray and med well. I had the halibut special with ravioli, the sauce overpowered the dish and the fish was over cooked. Our daughter is vegetarian and ordered the vegetable risotto which had a spicy kick to it with mainly root vegetables which would have been fine for a December meal but there seemed to be only parsnips and sweet potatoes in the dish and it came out lukewarm and not fresh.
Creme Brûlée Dessert was delicious and our waiter, John was charming and helped to make up for a very disappointing meal.
We went to the Mooring 12/2 for an advance celebration for my husband's birthday. My family of 11 plus two friends, one of whom shares the birthday with my husband unanimously agreed that we picked the perfect place for this special occasion. This was my first visit to The Moorings. I chose it based on the 4.5 star ratings on line and the comments of customers who rated the restaurant 5 consistently.
I made the reservations for 11:30 on line the night before but had to call in the following morning to revise the number, as the on line reservation limited the number to 6 persons only. There must be a valid reason for limiting it to six but would have preferred to complete the reservation at one sitting. Our arrival time was also changed to 12 p.m.
Shortly after all members of our party arrived, our orders were taken. No sooner than our orders were taken, our drinks, the scrumptious rolls/bread were served along with salad and soups. We did not have to wait long after that to get our main dishes. Remarkable service. I noted at least 3 times when there were 3 waiters/waitresses serving us. My only regret was that I forgot to write down the name of our waitress. She was amiable and very accommodating. We all were sated from our entrees that we did not have room for dessert. But our waitress accommodated my request for a Malt Chocolate Cake with 2 candles to celebrate my husband and my friend's birthday.
I ordered crab cake with grilled asparagus. The best crab cake I have ever tasted. No bread crumbs just pure crab meat lightly battered just enough to hold it together, crispy and very tasty. The scallop and the New England clam chowder were superb
My kids and their families have attended the Newport Boat Shows annually for a long long time. So they have eaten at The Moorings. I will highly recommend The Moorings again.
Thank you for making my husband's birthday a memorable one.
Amazing menu and the food was delicious. They were accommodating to only certain dietary needs so I would confirm with the chef before committing if you have special needs. The ambience was great and even in the winter the deck was warm. Service was stellar.
Quality of the food was unsurpassed, the halibut special was prepared and presented beautifully!! Staff went out of their way to seat us where requested. Server was pleasant and efficient. Would not recommend the bag of donuts, just a large amount of dough which took away some of appetite for the better things to come. Chowder was great, entrees superb!!
This is one of our must visit places in Newport, and a wedding anniversary only makes it doubly so. Wifey went with land fare and was not overly impressed. I went for the highly touted two pound lobster that showed up for the main event at about 1 and 1/2 lbs. With the $’s they charge, the price to value equation is distorted, as is the seeming practice at the other restaurants in the Newport Restaurant Group chain. We will still go there because of location and ambience, but will have to reign back our culinary expectations.
This was one of the most exceptional, memorable restaurant experiences we have had. The service was outstanding. From the moment we entered we were taken care of like we were the only customers there, even though the restaurant was full and they were preparing for a large party on the patio. The food was perfectly prepared, with delightful pairings of flavors. The gluten-free rolls were amazing, making me glad I accepted the offer, something that I rarely do because the product is usually so disappointing. The desserts were fabulous as well. The creme broulee was as smooth as silk. This restaurant is on the more expensive side, but worth every single penny. We will definitely remember this anniversary dinner with very fond memories.
Food was just O-K, nothing impressive. Service is on the slower side. It took a while to get my water glass refilled even though it was not a busy night. Good thing they had a vegetarian menu for my partner. However, I would not go here again or recommend this place to anyone.
