The Mermaid Oyster Bar Ratings and Reviews
It took about 40 minutes for my friend to find a parking spot while I sat at the table alone. The people inside were very polite about it even offering some advice on where she could try. They did not ask me to give my table up and continued to serve me with the best service even though I knew we were definitely becoming a nuisance. Beyond that this is the third time I’ve been here and every single time is has been equally packed.. not once has it ever taken long to order or receive anything. It doesn’t seem like there is an overload of waiters/waitresses either, the ones who are there are just that good!
My sister had dined at The Mermaid Oyster Bar before. Although she didn’t experience very good service, she enjoyed the Happy Hour enough to invite me to try it out too. Sadly, we came away sorely disappointed.
The food was quite good—the oysters, clams, and Mermaid Fish Tacos were stand-outs. The calamari was also tasty, and all the seafood tasted very fresh. However, the tacos were over-priced (3 tacos for $25!). We also ordered hush puppies that were over cooked and paired with an unpalatable rémoulade . As native Southerners, we were appalled at how poorly the hush puppies were executed. Lastly, drinks were unmemorable and watered down with too much ice.
Yet, the worst part of this establishment was the service, or rather the lack thereof. The people bussing the tables and refilling the water were attentive and kind, as were the hostesses. However, the server we had was awful.
My sister waited a long time before even being greeted or asked if she wanted to order a drink. Unlike countless establishments across the city in which servers kindly remind patrons when Happy Hour is ending and offer to take last orders, our waitress never checked in if we wanted to order anything else. When we wanted to order additional items off of the regular menu, we spent over 15 minutes looking for our waitress until I had to flag down a different server just to find her.
Our waitress was flippant and negligent. After being burned twice by this restaurant, we are reluctant to return.
Always great attentive service from everyone! Oysters are always fresh, and delicious. Cocktails are well balanced and creative. Small plates and the chowder cups are consistent and well seasoned. And again, the service overall is outstanding. This is why this is our go to for oysters, snacks and drinks every time!
My husband and I love to come for the happy hour goodies--best $1 oysters in town, and amazing small plates, including fish tacos in crispy shells, my favorites--and stay for dinner. I took members of my family there for my birthday a couple nights ago, and they were as impressed as I always am by the seafood and the attentive and friendly staff.
I included on my open table reservation that it would be my friend's birthday. I usually tell the waiter/waitress ahead of time when we're about to be seated, so they know to put a candle with dessert and make it celebratory. I loved that I didn't have to say a thing and the service was very attentive and quick. I loved the fortune fish in the end with dessert too, great touch! Only complaint I have is the beer - please improve your selection. I ordered grey lady, And I friend ordered a different type off the small craft selection. We both agreed that it was extremely watered down, weak tasting beer that made the meal slightly less enjoiyable. Other than that, we had 2 dozen happy hour oysters, fried calamari, fried oysters, shrimp corn dogs, the chatted octopus, gouda mac and cheese, and the shishito peppers. The food was delicious, the oysters were fresh (tad small), and we had a great experience. I would definitely recommend mermaid oyster bar to friends and family!
The every day happy hour from open til 7pm is what this place is great for! But, a reservation is needed no matter what day. Yes, that's a reservation for happy hour. It's gets crowded- so crowded that even the bar seating has a waiting list of their own. The $1 oysters are great! And, the $3 mini fish tacos and $3.50 mini tuna tartare tacos are my favorites. The $8 cocktails during happy hour are also delicious; I recommend the pear pressure!
It was my daughters' first time in NY. They are an avid fan of oysters. Researched the restaurant through Yelp. The oysters were fresh and service was quick. The ceviche was also very tasty, so as the calamari. Serving size was enough for 3-4 people. We came for happy hour and glad we made reservations as the lines were long by 5 pm.
Very accommodating. They prepared our dinner according to my dietary needs. The service was excellent. The seafood is fresh and good! And they give you complimentary chocolate pudding for dessert! They could use better A/C but all in all it was very good and we will return sooner than later!
The food was excellent. I had the salmon, and my husband had the steak. We both cleaned our plates. If you want oysters, I would definitely recommend going during happy hour because it is much cheaper. I gave the ambiance a 3 because all of the tables for two are high top tables; they aren't particularly comfortable. The disappointment of the night was the server. She was nowhere to be found when we needed her. The couple of times we needed something, we had to ask a busser or manager. My husband sat through his whole meal with an empty beer glass and she never came to offer another drink. It's really a shame to be spending $26 plus per entree and not have attentive service.
Mermaid consistently delivers super fresh raw oysters and clams. The happy hour specials are a bargain. After a doz. bring chilled littlenecks, I tried a new plate: "Portuguese Grilled Octopus"...perfectly cooked and resting on a bed of fresh corn kernels and soybeans, surrounded by a olive tapenade. Awesome!
