About The Mermaid Oyster Bar
Upon entering Mermaid Oyster Bar, diners feel as though they have escaped the city on a beach vacation. Offering delicious food in a welcoming atmosphere, patrons can enjoy a relaxing and leisurely dining experience away from the hustle & bustle of busy New York City streets. Bringing a bite of the beach to the West Village, this casual neighborhood spot combines a laid-back fish shack mentality with a menu that reads like an oyster bar’s greatest hits: an extensive raw bar; clam shack favorites like steamers, mussels and fried oysters; and a variety of simply prepared whole fish and fish sandwiches. The cocktails and beers on tap and the rollicking classic rock-country playlist evoke the nostalgia of summer on every visit.

The Mermaid Oyster Bar Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant was really great, a big oyster selection, good drinks. My husband and I shared a dozen of East and West coast oysters, all of which were on point, tuna tartare tacos, which are a must, and lobster claws escargot style, which was also very good. We also had one lobster roll each, which was absolutely divine! The service was great, everyone was very attentive to us. Really highly recommend!
We had a birthday celebration here recently. Started with Happy Hour and went into dinner. The raw oyster and clams are the freshest I’ve ever tasted, huge and cleaned well with no grit.
The ambiance was warm and welcoming and the service excellent and attentive. Waitress brought out complimentary pudding with candle for my friend’s birthday and the rest of the party. Appreciate that the waitress read my comment that this was a birthday celebration on the Open table reservation.
I definitely will be back and recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family for a relaxing and lovely evening dinner.
We go to Mermaid all the time. The first time we ever went was in on an October day hours before my husband proposed to me, so bear it mind this place has some sentimentality to it. Even the high top tables are actually pretty comfortable. I've ALWAYS felt like the staff were super nice, and that they're all really really efficient there. The food is always banging, and we LOVE happy hour so much that we skipped their very alluring pre-fixe on NYE. The oysters are always really fresh, and the portions are great. I think they have an outside, which we've yet to experience. NOTE: this place is SO different to the Mermaid Inn in the east village. I know it's the same "chain", but the staff there were just not friendly, and the food didn't cut it for us. If you're going this winter, you HAVE to get the mini clam chowder on the happy hour menu. Cheers, Mermaid West Village for always making our day and our stomachs happy and full. <3
Love the mermaid! Looks like a beach restaurant, nestled right in the Village. Happy hour deals cannot be beat - oysters, fish tacos, clam chowder. The meal is topped off with an adorable little pot de creme. Make a reservation or line up before 5 PM - it draws a crowd.
I found the service to be prompt and friendly, despite it being quite busy. The food was excellent and reasonably priced (we went for happy hour). The atmosphere felt cozy and relaxed; it would work for many different occasions, from a date night to a family outing. I would definitely go back and would recomend it to others.
Mermaid oyster bar was perfect. I was drawn to the Oyster bar because of their Oyster/Drinks Happy Hour and I was not disappointed! The Chef's Choice oysters were great. When we requested the check, we received a complimentary chocolate mousse. So cute and yummy! Will be returning!
It took about 40 minutes for my friend to find a parking spot while I sat at the table alone. The people inside were very polite about it even offering some advice on where she could try. They did not ask me to give my table up and continued to serve me with the best service even though I knew we were definitely becoming a nuisance. Beyond that this is the third time I’ve been here and every single time is has been equally packed.. not once has it ever taken long to order or receive anything. It doesn’t seem like there is an overload of waiters/waitresses either, the ones who are there are just that good!
My sister had dined at The Mermaid Oyster Bar before. Although she didn’t experience very good service, she enjoyed the Happy Hour enough to invite me to try it out too. Sadly, we came away sorely disappointed.
The food was quite good—the oysters, clams, and Mermaid Fish Tacos were stand-outs. The calamari was also tasty, and all the seafood tasted very fresh. However, the tacos were over-priced (3 tacos for $25!). We also ordered hush puppies that were over cooked and paired with an unpalatable rémoulade . As native Southerners, we were appalled at how poorly the hush puppies were executed. Lastly, drinks were unmemorable and watered down with too much ice.
Yet, the worst part of this establishment was the service, or rather the lack thereof. The people bussing the tables and refilling the water were attentive and kind, as were the hostesses. However, the server we had was awful.
My sister waited a long time before even being greeted or asked if she wanted to order a drink. Unlike countless establishments across the city in which servers kindly remind patrons when Happy Hour is ending and offer to take last orders, our waitress never checked in if we wanted to order anything else. When we wanted to order additional items off of the regular menu, we spent over 15 minutes looking for our waitress until I had to flag down a different server just to find her.
Our waitress was flippant and negligent. After being burned twice by this restaurant, we are reluctant to return.
Always great attentive service from everyone! Oysters are always fresh, and delicious. Cocktails are well balanced and creative. Small plates and the chowder cups are consistent and well seasoned. And again, the service overall is outstanding. This is why this is our go to for oysters, snacks and drinks every time!
My husband and I love to come for the happy hour goodies--best $1 oysters in town, and amazing small plates, including fish tacos in crispy shells, my favorites--and stay for dinner. I took members of my family there for my birthday a couple nights ago, and they were as impressed as I always am by the seafood and the attentive and friendly staff.
