We dined at the Mermaid for a birthday treat. The restaurant was very elegant and very old fashioned. The building is over 500 years old so the ambience was perfect. I found the staff very friendly and welcoming.
The menu was a fixed price one with several dishes offered. I opted for the scallops and they were excellent. For the main we both chose the trio of pork and it was very nice.
Great food and service in a stunning and uniquely historic setting.
Booked online in restaurant and the whole experience was a delight from a drink in the bar, lunch and finishing with coffee in the lounge by a log fire. Perfect.
Birthday Evening. Simply top notch. Well worth a visit.
Our second visit. Nice atmosphere and service. We enjoyed both Bar area and the main restaurant for dinner. Handsome old fireplace! Choice on the menu was good. Trio of pork was very tasty. Turbot and vegetables were also delicious though, probably, the smallest fish portion i have ever had. Plum dessert was excellent - light yet flavoursome and very satisfying. Will order again!
We booked the Mermaid to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. The pre-dinner drink in the bar was pleasant & the history of the building combined with the photographs of various celebrities who have dined there led us to believe we were in good hands. Once in the restaurant however things went downhill. We had asked for a nice table but got put next to a radiator under a window so the temperature variance was extreme. We asked to be moved to another table which was far nicer. When ordering the wine I duly tasted it but a few minuted later noticed the vintage on the menu 2013 was not that of the wine served, 2015. When I queried this the waiter abruptly flipped the menu to the inside cover which stated vintages may vary. An easy thing to miss, yet we were made to feel like* we* had somehow fallen short of expectations. When questioned there was no difference in price offered or explained. After this that waiter never returned to our table though he seemed to be working our section and we instead were served by a junior member of staff.
Our starters were enjoyable but when we asked for the turbot main we were told the kitchen had run out of turbot and the dish would be cooked with the same ingredients but the fish would be Dover Sole. Turbot is a favourite of ours but since we also like sole we went with it. This being our anniversary neither of us wanted any more upsets however after a few minutes of eating our mains we both noticed a faint but unmistakeable smell of ammonia. The sole was overcooked and quite heavily salted to the extent that we terminated the meal at that point. We explained to a senior waiter what the issue was and after he had discussed with the chef we were told the chef had checked and 'there was no problem'. This was the final insult to us as customers whose last thought was to pick fault. We were offered a free dessert but just wanted to leave as quickly as possible.
In summary the arrogance and sulky service ensure we will never return.
A wonderful pre-Christmas lunch with the family. Good menu and lovely venue.
The best vegetarian options that I have been offered for a long time. Food was beautifully presented, service attentive but not intrusive. Wonderful historic surroundings . Good value for money too.
Lovely food, beautiful setting with gorgeous fires in the bar areas. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend x
The quality of the food was exceptional. Plenty of choice on the lunchtime menu with very good service throughout the meal. We both had the three courses which took the full 90 minute slot and followed with coffee in the lounge. Staff were both friendly and helpful.
There appeared to be a problem with the booking through open table which had not been transferred to their booking schedule. However, the manager sorted this problem fairly quickly.
Overall a very enjoyable experience and we would definitely recommend it to friends and family.
We visited the night of the Rye Christmas festival and the staff were dressed in various weird and wonderful costumes and they all took it in their stride and looked after us with the same excellent service we have come to expect at the Mermaid.
Superb food. The staff in the restaurant were very attentive. Sense of humour without being too familiar. We had a lot evening. We liked how we were moved to an area with open fire for our coffee. Other couples there . The set up have you an opportunity to be sociable if you wanted to or not. Loved it!!
Sunday lunch main course average (hot plates would have helped) but the desserts were divine
This was a very peculiar dining experience! The attention from staff was impressive but strange , there seemed to be a different waiter for everything from bread to water.
The food was average if i’m Honest from the other reviews I was expecting more . The comedy value of the evening was the most memorable .
One of our meals, although very nice, was served cold - we were told by the waitress (very sweet) that chef serves it at 65% to save drying of pheasant but the food was cold. Also, vegetables were extra! 10% service charge was added to the whole bill - this should be optional. The atmosphere at The Mermaid is perfect but the food, for what it was, was expensive. it is a shame there is no fire in the restaurant. I think next time we will eat in the bar, much more cosy. We went to the lounge for a coffee and no fire was lit and it was chilly.
We celebrate our wedding anniversary most years at The Mermaid but this time the experience was a little disappointing.
Exceptional building and friendly staff. Sadly my Sunday beef roast was inedible, being 25% fat and desert took 35 minutes to arrive from order. Additional wine was the same. The restaurant was draughty near the window.
Excellent all round and impeccable service. We had 3 courses, all of which were delicious. The venison to share was enough to feed a family!
Great service and food. Lots of attention to details
A really enjoyable Sunday lunch in a wonderfully historic building and location. We followed up with coffee in one of their lounges.
Really lovely food and excellent service in a gorgeous medieval building
