Terrible experience. It was my friends 60th birthday. It was supposed to be a special evening. But it was not because of my experience .
They set us down at a very undesirable cramped table in the corner. Acoustics were terrible in the restaurant . Took a long time for the waiter to come over and take our drink order .
Then I felt this dripping on my head. It was from the AC unit above. They were not apologetic whatsoever. Then they sat us outside. Waiter did not come over for a half hour. So it took literally 45 minutes to get a glass of wine . Server was very unfriendly. Service was terrible/ slow. I had to ask for a candle on our table like the other tables .
Food was just OK. My ahi tuna was a small portion and overpriced .
Great place for a solid cocktail and fresh perfectly prepared seafood. The happy hour food menu is a deal, too!
Nothing beats their happy hour! You aren't limited to the bar and they even take reservations.
Wonderful food. The happy hour price and selection of food and drinks were wonderful. The fish tacos are amazing! The service was wonderful and attentive even though we were made dinner out of happy hour. If you love butter and lobster, the buttered lobster roll is for you. We would recommend to others, as it was recommended to us. My dinner partner and I have been talking about the experience for three days.
My first problematic experience here. I wanted the lobster bake without mussels. The last time I had it, the mussels were spoiled. Toxic, actually. So I asked to not have it with the mussels. They could not accomodate this request. Which seemed odd. Just don't put mussels on the plate? So, we had a drink, some oysters and left for another restaurant in the 'hood with a more welcoming environment. I eat here no less than twice a month so this was an anomaly. Usually great service and food.
Great as always
As always Mermaid is great. The service , food was excellent. It was worth the wait to sit outside as one of our group had hearing issues. Thank you to Mermaid’s staff for making that happen. Even the other guests were charming as a couple confessed to staying late just to eavesdrop on a fun conversation we were having. All was good!
The sparkling wine from New York State was recommended by our server and he was spot on. We sat on the patio and enjoyed a dozen oysters to start - all very different and fresh. The lobster knuckles (like escargot) were garlicky and great with the bread. A nice wedge salad plus entrees of pasta with clams and hanger steak were all finished before a brief cloudburst. The canopy gave us good shelter to enjoy the chocolate mousse - yum. We are already planning a return visit.
Fantastic happy hour experience. Chef’s choice oysters were outstanding. Favourite was the shrimp and avocado slider and the lobster roll (literally lobster, brioche and all the butter). Attentive and patient service. Super lively crowd.
We were so disappointed with this restaurant. The only negative reviews we saw were for noise levels — and, admittedly, it was a tad too loud. Perhaps one too many tables. The server had to lean over to speak to the table next to us — his body right in my face as a result.
The oysters (east and west coast variety) were all subpar: tasteless and chewey. We had grey goose martinis that were all vermouth. His linguini and clam entree was far more linguini than clams, and nothing special. My tuna was bland, though the peanut sauce and cauliflower fried rice were tasty.
They rushed us through dinner. We were very
unimpressed and won’t be returning.
I love the food at this restaurant. The service is also great. Only issue I have is that it is soooo noisy there!
Food and service are consistently good
My hubby and I celebrated my 38th birthday dinner. We sat at the bar. He ordered off the happy hour menu - raw oysters, fried oysters, calamari, and shrimp sandwich. I tried the calamari, we both agreed it was a bit too fried! He enjoyed his rum cocktails as well.
I had the lobster roll entree. I have been waiting 9 months for it (as I am pregnant and saved my seafood intake at the very end of this journey)! The lobster was amazing and the old bay fries, were yummy. The homemade complimentary chocolate mousse is so decadent. Overall, it was a lovely evening and a great birthday dinner!!
Great food just not enough!
Fabulous as always!
My boyfriend and I have been going to the Mermaid Inn for date nights for the past few months and we cannot get enough. We both love oysters, so we show up during happy hour, get around 2 dozen oysters to share as starters and couldn’t be happier. We also usually get the lobster knuckles, lobster served escargot style, and their butteriness with the herbs and bread crumbs on top are heavenly. We have tried a few other starters here, and they are all amazing. The service here is impeccable - we have had the same waiter a couple times now (John) and he not only remembered us months after we came, but has always been incredibly sweet and prompt. The complimentary chocolate mousse at the end is my favorite, it’s delicious, served in tiny mugs, and comes with an adorable fortune fish. Thank you Mermaid Inn! We’ll be back soon
We went during Happy Hour and had some very tasty small plates - oysters, fish tacos, calamari, mini-lobster rolls, all good, though the sauce with the calamari was pretty dull. Could have used some spicy aioli.
However, the food hardly matters, because the noise level was simply deafening, as loud as a subway going by, and it was impossible to hear or be heard across the table, even shouting. Service is laconic, but everything came eventually. Just too exhausting trying to scream and eat at the same time. Too bad.
Even though we were disappointed at not being able to sit outside to accommodate a hearing issue, we were shown a table in a reasonably quiet place and then comped an extra appetizer. That was a nice move. Always good service and always good food. Thank you.
Nice place for dinner in UWS - Pleasantly surprised at how well prepared food was. Delicious salad with prawns and melon and both our seafood entrèes were delicious.
The cheap oysters at happy hour can't be beat! Lobster roll and fish taco were wonderful.
everything was fine and waiter was wonderful and helpful, but just a wee bit aggressive in trying to get us served and turned.
Need to relax a bit.
Server made several rounds in his area but skipped my table 2+ times when we were seeking him out.
Value (portions) are meh for the price.
Complimentary chocolate mousse is amazing and should continue.
Lots of service lapses. Missing silverware, forgotten drink orders, etc. all these actors are pleasant and nice to look at but it’s a restaurant. avocado in tuna tartare starter was unripe.
Always , always. Love this place . One of the best lobster rolls in the city
What a find. Great service. Great food. Cute decor. Noise level is an issue and you’re right on top of the table next to you. Minor compared to the experience overall. Coming back for sure.
The food (fish tacos, clam chowder, lobster bake special), as always, was very good. Great place to get a seafood meal!
It's the best place on the upper west side and the happy hour is such a good idea.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating for our larger (8 person) party. Visited on a Sunday evening and it was absolutely packed- standing room only at the bar and wait for tables even with a reservation. We waited for about 20 minutes but it was well worth it as everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Our server was great and gave us all complimentary pudding for a birthday celebration.
Love this place especially for bunch. The atmosphere is lively, the food delicious and the service is very good.
What a delightful restaurant! Fabulous food and a wonderful vibe. You can't help but have a good time here.
food and service excellent! noise level manageable as they sat us towards the back.
We had a great evening at The Mermaid Inn! Food was delicious (all three of us had the special-scallops) and drinks were tasty! To top it off, everyone got a pudding cup at the end which was a nice sweet touch on top of an amazing dinner.
Always a hit. Service is always excellent and I am convinced they have the best oysters in town! Even with minor hiccups that can happen, the team always goes out of their way to always make it right. Been coming here for years and will continue to do so. Management is strong, quality of food is strong and it shows!
The mermaid inn is the perfect place for a summer night out. We love the Calamari salad! Highly recommend for a date night or dinner with friends. The service is quick and the staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Always love dining at The Mermaid Inn. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. And it's usually noisy, but that's part of its charm.
Love! Have to visit every time we’re in nyc!
The Mermaid Inn was recommend by our host so we were really looking forward to it, but were really disappointed. First, we were seated at the back of the restaurant near the exit door and the waitperson station ( which was noisy). The food did not stand out. It came out so fast after we ordered it that it must have been prepared ahead of time. The cost did not meet the value of the food sorry to say. Not memorable at all.
First time at this restaurant. Service excellent. Very noisy.
The Happy Hour menu was fantastic! We tried (and enjoyed) the raw oysters, the fish tacos, and the grilled shrimp and avocado sliders. We added an order of the old bay fries as well. All the food was prepared beautifully and served quickly. Great atmosphere!
