In celebration of our 15th year in the East Village, we will be closing our back room for renovations in preparation for an amazing summer season. Seating will be confined to the front room only for the duration of renovations that will limit on-line availability. If you have any trouble making a reservation on-line, please do not hesitate contacting the restaurant directly and we will absolutely do our best to accommodate your party.

New York’s favorite fish house serves up classic seafood specialties in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Restaurateur Danny Abrams’ flagship Mermaid Inn — dubbed an inexpensive version of Le Bernardin by New York Magazine — features a cozy, secluded garden in back, sidewalk café in the front and a dining room that’s always buzzing. The cuisine and the décor are sure to bring back your favorite memories of New England.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.7

A staple in the Infatuation playbook since back in 2003 when we were standing in line outside of terrible Manhattan night clubs and listening to nothing but Brand New and 50 Cent. The fish here is always fresh and fantastic, and the lobster roll is very solid.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

Monday is an all day happy hour! Service was really great and there is outdoor dining in the front and the back. The oysters we had were definitely not the best, but the sliders are amazing and they have a great bloody mary. We were celebrating a friends first day at a new job and the waiter brought us all little chocolate puddings at the end of the meal!! So lovely, would recommend

The food was delicious, especially the appetizers like the lobster knuckles and the octopus. The servers were attentive. It was a little pricey, but not too bad. The ambiance was nice. Low lighting, warm colors, which I loved.

I've been here many times, and sorry, but the food has gone downhill and overpriced. I sadly would not go back.

A bit shocked. Have come here a lot but was disappointed this time around. Waitress lacked any follow up. Service was slow and the food was not up to its usual standard. Unfortunate since this used to be my go to for dollar oysters.

Always glad when I get a reservation here because I love seafood but will consider sitting at the bar also. Happy hour bargains -- food and drink -- abound. We had very friendly service.

Very good nice atmosphere to relax
Service was leisurely on a Sunday night which was appreciated!
Food was delicious as we sampled. Each other’s dishes.
The only downside was the grilled octopus appetizer portion was a bit on the skimpy side. Otherwise no complaints as the food was delicious.

Went early- 5:30pm to have dinner before an event at 6:30 in the neighborhood.
Shocked to see how many people dine at that hour! Food was very good, not great, but took a long time to arrive. Would go back for a later, more leisurely meal, though it is a packed and noisy place

I expected good food and good oysters. And I got them. The wine , a Sauvignon Blanc was good also. I always order fish tacos because they are delicious and light.
The noise level was bothersome and we were seated tightly.
The service was good. We were going to the theater and we did not stay long.
I definitely would go back but ask for a table in the back room.

It was extremely loud and not a good spot If looking to have a decent conversation. The happy hour oysters and clams were not as big as some other places, and a few that I had still had sand or the shell was cracked pourly and was in thr osyter. The portions of the entrees were smaller than aniticipated as well. When I went to the Mermaid Inn in Greenwich Village I don’t remember leaving feeling hungry, but we were definitely not fully satiated when we left here. At the other location, when the raw oysters were small they gave us extra to make up for it. Also the fried oyster was really small and also small compared to the other location and other restaurants that serve the same item and much better price. $3.50 for a tiny fried oyster is not right. Many other options for happy hour oysters of higher quality and other seafood items so probably would not come here again.

I've been coming to the Mermaid Inn for years. Several close friends were visiting from San Francisco and I wanted to be sure they got to experience your restaurant. They loved it!

From fish tacos to lobster rolls, even the fish and chips were so tasty! All of the week our meals were light, flavorful, well done! The staff was pleasant and our meals were ready in record time! My only complaint was that the scallop appetizer was too small. The ambiance was great! The complimentary pot of chocolate cream was delightful!! And the fortune telling fish as the end was the prefect finishing touch!!

The East Village Mermaid Inn is our favorite of the three: welcoming hosts, efficient bus staff, professional wait staff, great cocktails at Happy Hour and delicious food. A perfect beginning to an evening of theater in the neighborhood.

Happy hour specials go all night on Monday which was a pleasant surprise. Menu was different than was online which was a slight disappointment though it was still delicious. I came solo and the staff was very attentive and nice. Liked the atmosphere.

Fish and chips were not very good. Not cod for sure. Overfried. And chips are not French fries. Kind of a sautéed cut potato.
Lobster knuckles were delicious.

Had not been for a while (couple of years) and won't return to this one.

Place is a little too dark.

Had a lovely time celebrating a birthday at the mermaid inn with my significant other this past weekend. I do want to note that we went before an 8pm show solo we dined during their "happy hour" and the bar was very crowded and a little loud. It was a little hard for me to hear my date but it did not deter from overall experience. We had a nice time and really enjoyed lobster rolls and lobster knuckles! I would go back for their happy hour deals!

Monday night happy hour special: Oysters were SO small that they were mere slivers, not oysters. Ridiculous. Do they take customers for fools? Even a small oyster is still an oyster. These were not oysters. The "fish tacos" were so small the quantity of fish was nonexistent. Just biting into crunchy lard, no fish to be found. The fried calamari was also all fry, no calamari. Disinterested waiter. We went straight to Upstate (our first time there) on 1st Ave to get our oyster fix and they were great.

Wonderful staff and great food. Very attentive to our needs. Made it a special night.
Very crowded on valentines night, but we were seated on time and food came out as we needed. Started with calamari and followed it with a very nice salad. Bronzino entree was prepared perfectly. A little noisy, but we had the corner window table, at it was not an issue. Great place. Can’t wait to return.

Great service, delicious food, decent happy hour. Bites for happy hour are a bit on the small side. I ordered 2 tacos and a slider and had 6 oysters, was still hungry. Happy hour ended at 7, so I ordered from the regular menu and split a tuna main entree with a friend. If you're there for happy hour, order more than you think you need. Can get a bit expensive but it's nicely done seafood so I accept that it's on the pricier side.
