We waited for over thirty minutes to get our table (reserved for months). Then we waited two hours for our main course. Very disappointed overall. We have been there in the past and our experience was much better. Not sure we will be back.
This was my first time to the restaurant, I went there with my sister for an early birthday brunch, we had reviewed the menu and had our choices made before we went. My sister ordered the fishcakes of which there were none left, I ordered the quiche, there was none left so we had to rethink our order. we both ordered Chicken and waffles , I assumed the chicken would be white meat, I guess I should have asked because we weren't told anything by our server, it was like pulling teeth. It was a thigh with skin still on (I hate skin), the batter was overcooked, dry and hard, the waffle was also bland and dry, there was no sauce (I guess I should have asked for that too) the server offered no help or information on what was available and since it was our first time, we had no idea what to ask for. It did not come with hashbrowns so we had to order those extra, they were so burnt and hard you couldn't even eat them with a fork, the few we did manage to eat we picked up with our fingers. The egg on top of the chicken was under cooked, the white of the egg was still all jelly (not sure if this is the way it is supposed to be but it looked horrible). Also the bill was totaled wrong. We tried not to ruin our special lunch by complaining so we said "live and learn" and we just won't go back. "Not my cup of tea."
We made a reservation earlier in the week for a table of 4 for brunch. When we arrived for our reservation, we were instead given not a table but corner seats at the oyster bar, which was vacant since it was brunch. I told the hostess that we had a reservation for a table, but she informed me that this was the seats that were assigned to us and could not be changed. Patrons walking-in and sitting at the bar with no reservations appeared to have a better atmosphere than we did with a reservation.
A few other bad notes: I was only served the coffee I ordered upon arrival after I received my meal – I had to remind the waitress that I never received it (she didn't check up on our table from the moment we ordered to when our food arrived, so this was the first opportunity I had to notify her). Same thing with my tea biscuit, I only got it after my meal, after I reminded the waitress that it never arrived.
Having been a regular customer at this establishment since its opening, and this experience left a really sour taste in my mouth. I was sincerely disappointed with the service I received. To the best of my knowledge,I was never notified during booking, by email, or by phone, that the table that I was going to be assigned was not a table at all, but what were (in my opinion) the worst seats in the house during the brunch service.
I'd highly recommend anybody considering booking a reservation to call the establishment to inquire about the table they will actually be assigned.
The food was very disappointing. A seafood soup that had no flavour and was so hot and overcooked the fish had dissolved. This was followed by two pasta dishes which again lacked flavour. Three of our dishes were barely touched yet the waiter did not ask if there was a problem. The service was equally poor, very offhand. At the end of the meal I said to the waiter we were disappointed with the food and he just shrugged. The people around us ate hamburger and chips which says it all. This place is relying on noise and a trendy look to get it through. It is really a bar not a restaurant serving quality food.
Menu is nicely varied and freshened up frequently. Food is great and the overall experience of dining there is very enjoyable.
Excellent lunch as always - Caesar salad and seafood soup both menu staples that never fail to disappoint.
Went for our anniversary brunch. Food was delicious but the tables are a little to close to others....felt like we were sat at the table with them
Service was great..food was mediocre. We were disappointed.
Fabulous service, attractive venue, comfortable seating. I had my 5 month old daughter with me and she got a bit fussy when the food came out. The server offered to put my plate under the heating lamp until I was ready. I have never had that offered to me before and it was greatly appreciated (though not expected). Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Disappointed with no menu additions for Mother's Day weekend brunch. No dessert specials either. Lack of seafood options extremely disappointing. Food was poorly seasoned and bland. Service was terrible - had to ask hostess to get server for coffee refills. $110 for 2 adults and 2 children with no alcohol or dessert. Atmosphere felt tense and unwelcoming. This was our monthly family brunch restaurant, but we will be looking somewhere new next month.
Food was great. Server was very attentive. I usually go for an evening meal but this time we went there for brunch and it is much quieter that in the evening. We enjoyed it greatly. The only issue I would have is the noice when dining in the evening. The food is most always great. Service is good as well.
We had made the reservation over a week in advance through Open Table. When we got there we were disappointed to be escorted to sit at the raw bar when we expected to have a table for 2. When we explained this to the host (and that nowhere online were we given the option to choose the raw bar vs regular seating), he was kind enough to reorganize seating to provide us with a table for 2. The meal was fantastic, the server attentive without being intrusive and the prices were very reasonable given the quality of the dining experience. We'll be back!
I had been here before and had an amazing experience. This time the food was just ok and had very few seafood options.... actually only 1. They said it was because nothing local was available but other restaurants seemed to find local options. They have a fish in their logo!! The bar tender was great as were the drinks but once we transferred to our table the disappointment began. Our waitress was so curt with little or personality.... to the point of being rude. We were all so turned off by her attitude and the limited seafood that after our appetizers we ejected to leave. My two companions were very disappointed as I had trumpeted this place for a couple days. If the waitress had been warmer or even civil we might have stayed and had something else .... the food did look good.
Had an amazing evening. The portion sizes were perfect, all recommendations made by the server were on point and the food was out of this world. A must for dinner and I will definitely be back!
Brilliant food....brilliant service!
Food was outstanding and service very good.
What we didn't like was the lack of privacy because of the extreme close proximity of our table to the next table. Also, the high tables are very small so there wasn't much room for our dishes, wine glasses, wine etc.
Server was amazing. Keep up the amazing work. We will be back
Had friend from out of town who like pasta I ate there before and recommend merchants however this time it was very very disappointing my friends were not satisfied the pasta was dry and tasteless, maybe because we had a late seating and it was left sitting I have no idea but what we got was so disappointing for the price !!!! sorry for this but as a business owner I respect any criticism good or bad !!!
My first time there and it was delicious, I will definitely be back, this time for supper 😋
It was a very nice experience. Very loud but the high ceilings must be part of the reason. Only real complaint was why we had to book for 5:45pm with no other option until 8:30pm yet the whole place was only half full the whole time we were there. Very early for dinner but as I am from out of town I wanted to try it.
Service was top-notch and the food was incredible.
Loved the Merchant Tavern. Great food, great atmosphere. Menu offered something for everyone in our group. Service was a bit slow, but the friendly servers made up for it. They serve the best pancakes we’ve ever eaten!
Merchant Tavern has quickly become our go-to Sunday brunch destination. The service is fantastic and the food is great too!
amazing as always
Great food. Great service. Always excellent :)
Great food, amazing service, and I truly love the atmosphere and feel. Overall an outstanding experience that I will always recommend others check out for themselves.
Outstanding fish and chips! A good Friday well spent
Highly recommend tasting menu with wine pairing
As with other experiences of the Merchant, the food, services and atmosphere were great. I had the cod cakes - no egg, extra salad (which was so delicious!). The meal was excellent!
Food was excellent and the service was very friendly and fairly quick. Great scene. Little louder than I expected but did not taint the experience.
Nice place. Efficient and organized!
Our service was courteous and prompt. She makes some nice pairing selections and they worked wonderfully!
Understandably the location will bump prices ... downtown leases are murder on restos... the food was good but a few points higher than I wanted ...
Mussels were good. A little flat, needed some love with the salt and some more acid.
The tuna Ceviche was bang on!!! You all killed that dish We both had the sirloin. Fries were perfect, temps and seasoning bang on. Compound butter was a little too aggressive with the smoke but overall delicious!
Irish cream creme brule was terrific!
Great meal- thanks again chefs and support!
Absolutely fabulous, my first time dining there and definitely not my last. Our entire party for four LOVED IT. Servings were so large we all had fries left on out plates.
The restaurant no longer provides the local thick cut maple bacon for brunch, standard grocery store bacon now. Brunch was underwhelming.
Had a great night! Started off with a charcuterie board. I had their flank steak special with whipped mash potatoes and mushrooms and it was cooked perfectly. My partner had the grilled salmon who also said tasted fantastic! Can’t wait to go back!
Food , ambiance, service all great!! We had dinner here before a concert and we're glad we did, it was a perfect place to start off our evening. Will be back!
Très bon restaurant, accueil chaleureux, bon rapport qualité prix
Always amazing and never disappoints. Food was incredible, cannot wait to go back.
Great atmosphere. I had the special of the day, a peanut butter burger, needless to say it exceeded expectations - would recommend.
