The Melting Pot - Gaithersburg Ratings and Reviews
Our 3rd time there, but it has been a few years since last visit. It has gone downhill.
Server seem preoccupied. Had to continually wait 15-30 minutes for basic things he assured he would bring right out. Water, plates, taking order, getting the pot hot, bringing food...
Due to food allergies, we couldnt order a 4 course dinner, which really seemed to annoy him.
The appetizer was ok for 2 adults and 2 kids, but 8 bite-sized pieces of protein for the entree was sad. We had more sauce than meat to put it on.
Those 2 courses plus 4 glasses of (never refilled) water for $70+ is ridiculous.
Overall experience was good but not great. Server was nice, but seemed rushed. The time-spacing of the food was irregular. We had to wait longer than expected for the cheese; then salads were there before we finished the cheese. Portions continue to get smaller; apples were mushy; salad had too much dressing. Table was by an outside door and therefore chilly (it was a cold night).
This was our first time at the Melting Pot and everything was perfect for my daughter's birthday. They had the table set for her birthday (i.e. balloons, a stuffed bear, and chocolate covered strawberries). She also received a piece of birthday cheese cake. The staff are professional, polite, and our waiter had a great sense of humor. The food was excellent (even my husband enjoyed it and he is strictly a meat and potatoes man). I would definitely go back for a special occasion even though the prices are a bit high. The food, service, and atmosphere make it worthwhile. We took the four course meal and spent a good three hours at the restaurant. It was the most relaxed and fun meal I have had in a very long time.
As always, the Melting Pot was a wonderful way to dine, drink, and spend an enjoyable evening. This case was a special occasion but I heartily recommend it for any reason. The seating allows for conversation even when full since the individual tables are arranged such as to allow you to feel private but not isolated.
Food was good as usual. Service was terrible. Also the ambiance was odd as we were at a table where apparently waiters use to smoke so it was kind of odd. Especially when your waiter is smoking and has forgotten something you ordered. He was beyond friendly but forgot items 5 different times. Also, the check was over billed so we had to have that fixed as well.
Another disappointing visit to The Melting Pot. The restaurant was maybe only half full, but it took about 30 minutes to get a drink for my friend's 4 year-old, and another 30 minutes until we had our first course. We asked for some extra pretzel bread dippers, but an extra bowl of mixed bread did not arrive until we were done with the cheese. We expressed our frustration to our waiter and the manager-in-training came to ask how everything was. We told him, and our next visitor was the manager. We appreciated the manager and manager-in-training assisting our waiter in getting our dinner moving, but it shouldn't have been necessary, we weren't seeking anything out of the ordinary. The manager took our orders herself, and our waiter came to deliver them, not knowing who ordered what. He also told my friend the wrong cook time for one of his meats, and when my friend waved him down to confirm, the waiter impatiently told my friend the waiter was right and my friend was wrong. My friend then asked the manager who realized the meat was a different one than the waiter thought it was, and told my friend the correct cook time. We asked for extra of one of the dipping sauces, and our waiter brought us the wrong one. When we asked again, he brought us a huge bowl of the right one, clearly not realizing his original mistake and thinking we were just obnoxiously asking for extra. With our dessert, we received hastily thrown together and uneven plates of dippers, that were missing some of the normal dipping items, such as the pound cake and marshmallows. When we asked for another plate of dippers, we again got something that looked like our waiter had just grabbed a couple handfuls of things and thrown them on a plate. The manager was nice enough to comp our dessert and the 4 year-old's meal, which is why I gave this 3 stars and not 1. But it's always such an ordeal. And there was a table near us that was not cleared the entire 2+ hours we were there, which was just gross.
We goto the Melting Pot once or twice a year. It is a place we reserve for special occasions. Two times before we were there for the Special Christmas dinner. That was a horrible experience -new waiter, pots never heated like they should etc. However the last two times, have been quite good. To be honest the server makes the difference. If the food offerings changed -we would be there more often...
It was so nice that I didnt feel like being gluten free compromised the quality of my meal. So often I just have to order a salad and some meat or guess if it has gluten. It was clearly marked and selecting gf options was super easy. They even have gf bread now! Thanks. I will be back for sure.
The Melting Pot is a different kind of dining experience. I hadn't been there in several years. We were celebrating our anniversary. I was please to find vegetarian entree options and they we're really good. The service was great. The manager stopped by our table with an anniversary card. I loved the quiet, that allowed my husband and I to carry on a quiet conversation. My favorite part of the meal was the cheese fondue and dessert chocolate fondue.
Since I was last here, salads have shrunk. Too much. Before, they were so large nobody could finish the entrees, but now they barely fill a bread plate, which was swimming in dressing.
The vegetables offered to accompany the cheese fondue were also a little skimpy. Who does celery?
Last, the meats were fine but the ahi tuna in sesame seed inexplicably salty, and in contrast my daughter's marinated tofu was so bland she couldn't eat it, even with sauce.
It seems like with the high price tag and the fact that the diner pretty much cooks for himself, they could step up their game a bit.
My boyfriend and i and 2 friends had a awesome time it was all of our first times ever being there to eat, we were there to celebrate my birthday and my boyfriend proposed to me there that night (i said yes) and im sure we will be coming back for anniversary's for years to come!
Fun, different, and tasty! Option to have four-course meal — cheese fondue; salad; entree/broth fondue; chocolate dessert fondue — gives you lots of food and lots of combinations of tastes with different sauces and items to cook in the pots. The price can add up for what you're getting, but at least there's plenty of food to go around. Service (thank you, Kevin!) was very attentive, friendly, and helpful (considering first-timers may need a lot of explanation about how their fondue dinners work). Can definitely recommend for an nice occasion to try something memorable and delicious.
The Melting Pot was fantastic. Being raised in a Swiss household, I know what a good fondue should taste like. The Melting Pot captured the perfect Swiss Cheese fondue with their Alpine Cheese selection. They even offered Kirschwasser! Highly recommend this restaurant.
Service atrocious. 15-20 minute periods of complete waiter disappearance and lengthy periods between each course. Even getting water and drinks was huge wait. This with reservations. We had kids on school night. Dinner took 3.5 hours! Sad because food is great. Hard to get past the service.
