The Melting Pot - Columbia Ratings and Reviews
The experience we had wasn't awful. It just wasn't good, either. Things were actually going well until halfway through the meal. Up to that point it had been taking longer and longer for our server to return to us in our little back corner of the restaurant, but we let it go. Then I asked for a drink and some more dipping sauce (there was almost none in the containers to begin with), and he disappeared for about 20 minutes. We saw him at other tables, but couldn't flag him down. My food was overcooking in the pot or sitting cold on my plate, so I decided I'd had enough and called the restaurant to get the front desk. I asked if someone could just bring my drink and the sauce we asked for. I got maybe 3 servers and the manager. I finally got that sauce, but they took the other one and never brought more.
While I feel bad for causing a scene, this was supposed to be a special occasion, and I wasn't wrong to complain. I have good memories of this restaurant from previous visits years ago, and this experience did not live up to them. I appreciate what the manager did to make up for it, comping our dessert, but then not a few minutes later the server started clearing the entire table while we still had food on our plates. My fiance got to keep his plate, but he was trying to scrape up what little dipping sauces were left to finish the food because the server took that too. I feel like we were being rushed to finish dessert and go.
On the way out we let the manager know that there was some spilled soap on the floor in the bathroom. We were just trying to be considerate and give them a heads up so someone else didn't wind up complaining. The response we got felt like she just wanted us to leave. It wasn't a great night. I definitely won't be going back to that location ever again. The food was good, but then again, you cook your own food. The entire reason for going is the ambiance and the way the different courses are served. If that's no good, what's the point?
We are from out of town and I had made a 5 pm reservation for myself & my husband. We arrived and were seated fairly quickly. Our waiter, Calvin, was exceptional. My husband has Celiac Disease and cannot eat gluten. Calvin was very sympathetic and brought us GF plates that were delicious. We enjoyed the 4 course meal and were at the restaurant for 3 hours. It was a cuisine experience that we thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely be back!
The food was good, but the experience is what you're paying for. It's a nice restaurant, you get to do a lot of the boiling and dipping yourself (it is a fondue place, after all). They have lots of amenities if you're looking for uniqueness on a special occasion.
I have been to this melting pot many times and have always been very happy. However this night was terrible. We had a waiter who just would disappear and some other helper would try to help out. The cheese course they had put both the bread and vegetables on one plate and the bread was soggy(gross!). Couldn’t find our waiter to exchange so we dealt with it. Took another 30 minutes to get our salads. Our broth was put on the table only to evaporate because our food was no where because our waiter was no where. Some other staff member refilled our broth, never added the wine to the coco vin which we paid extra for and we finally got our food. We did the special valentine menu and were also very disappointed with the mini pieces of meat (4) of each that were on our trays. It wasn’t even busy when we were there for an 8 o’clock reservation. We did not get out of there until 11:30 due to the service. When I was leaving I tried to locate the manager to fill her in on our experience and she too was no where to be found. I’m not sure I’ll be back...it was very disappointing.
Our server was friendly & sweet. Food was amazing as always. After our entree arrived our server checked back in on us once after a few minutes, but after that she did not come back for over 30 minutes. We kept waiting for her to come over to ask for more vegetables and extra sauce. I used to serve so I understand that she was probably busy with other tables. However when she came over she just seemed rushed and did not apologize for not coming back over in a timely manner. I still was trying to be understanding, but would have been nice if she at least said she was caught up with a big party (for ex) and say sorry for not being able to come over to us, or whatever reason. The rest of the meal it seemed that we were bothering/inconveniencing her. Will of course come back to our favorite restaurant, but did not enjoy being left there for 30 minutes, while we saw other the servers approaching there tables constantly, at about 5 min intervals. (Would have spoken up to ask them for what we wanted, but kept thinking our server would soon show up. Also shouldn’t have to be on us to have to ask other staff members...)
Amazing experience. I went to celebrate a birthday with my family on Saturday Feb 3rd, and we were treated like we were the guest of honor.
Our server Justin was outstanding. What stood out was his patience as two people in my party have never been to the establishment and were asking a ton of questions and were indecisive at times. He did a good job answering questions, explaining how the fondue works, and with engaging with everyone in our party.
Great service Melting Pot Columbia, great service Justin!
Party of 4 Saturday evening
First of all there was a kid yelling and screaming !!!! The waiter was over worked, not clear about things and service sucked !!! The owner walked around visiting tables and talked to a couple for about five minutes when we needed a refill !!! I wouldn’t recommend the melting pot in Columbia. We will go to the one in Towson if we ever decide to visit again. Spent 115.00 and the food suck and service was horrible. The owner should stop talking about herself and help her employees or hire more people. We don’t care about your personal life we want good service and a great night out .
My husband and I had dinner and dessert at the Melting Pot. The food and drinks were great. My only complaint is that we had an 8:45pm reservation, but did not get seated until after 9pm. The restaurant seemed to be short staffed, which is something we have previously experienced at the Melting Pot . Overall, we had a good time and would recommend this place to others due to the unique dining experience!
Despite our reservation, we still had to wait more than 30 minutes to be seated. Our waiter was quick and attentive for the first 2 courses. However, he brought us a very small quantity of items to dip in our chocolate fondues. We had to wait 20 minutes for additional fruit, etc. In the meantime, the water in one of our pots had all boiled out and were were sitting with a stinky, burning pot. The smell and smoke is what finally brought back our waiter. However, it took another 30minutes to get our check after we had asked for it.
A set of circumstances came together to make this meal memorable for all the wrong reasons. Service was really pretty terrible. Our server had our table (in the corner) and a bunch of tables on the other side of a wall and as a result we barely saw her. Our burner was acting up so the oil came to temperature and then kept getting hotter. By the time we tracked down the manager, we had burned about 1/3 of our entrée. The promise of more careful watching, to ensure we didn't have the same problem, never came to be. We sat for 25 minutes with dirty, entrée plates waiting for someone to take our dessert order -- it was the manager who ultimately did so. This had been our choice for a fun, once in a while special meal but we will enjoy that elsewhere from now on.
The food here was great, however the service was seriously lacking. Had to leave my table twice and ask at the hostess stand for my server. Finally talked to the manager. Manager was wonderful and apologized repeatedly. She attended to my table after that. Overall not a bad experience but the lack of service definitely took away from our experience.
I’ve been to other melting pots so knew what to expect. The food and service were great. The location we were sat was not. We sat along a hallway to the kitchen so constant servers walking through killed the romantic evening we had planned. Also, shortly after we were seated, a server tripped and spilled another tables used cooking liquid. They cleaned it up quickly, but there was an odor that remained. If you go to this location, I would recommend asking to be sat at a better table.
The food and atmosphere was excellent! Septon (our server) was attentive and very helpful! We celebrated the 50th anniversary of our first date and had a wonderful time! 3 different fondues, all excellent! The manager (Heather) gave us a bottle of “bubbly “ and chocolate covered strawberries to help us celebrate! VERY Nice!
The Melting Pot is our go-to place for any/all celebrations!
It’s a fun experience but the price is entirely too high. Our server although was very friendly, he was not good at explaining things . Not sure if he was new but he did not explain anything and we ended up getting foods we do not like which could have been prevented had he thoroughly explained the menu. I think it’s best to go for dessert but not food, very expensive for what you get.
Our food was really tasty, and our server was very sweet, but we waited 45 minutes between finishing our main course, and getting our dessert (and that was 45 minutes after we actually ordered the dessert - in addition, we did have to wait about 15 minutes after we finished our main course to even get the dessert menu). It kind of ruined the experience.
The meal overall was great. I wish our waiter gave more suggestions and came back more frequently to check in on us since it had been a year since I had been to the Melting Pot and it was my friend's first time. The time between he would come to see how we were and us actually eating was a bit long, especially since we had a movie we were trying to catch right after the meal. But other than that I really enjoyed the ambiance and the meal.
Our server was just-the-right friendly. Connected well with our group of 6 women. Whole the cheese fondue was delicious, we were given a only a small amount of apples and vegetables to dip in our cheese, and didn’t include broccoli, usually a staple - celery, carrots, cauliflower. The chocolate fondue was excellent, and the dippers were plentiful and varied. The round table worked well for conversation. Overall a nice Thursday evening out in a quiet setting.
We love the Melting Pot. This time there was a really unhappy baby at the next table, which made it a much less relaxing experience....and even then I still want to come back. Normally the atmosphere is calm and quiet, and I leave feeling full and happy. Next time!
My wife and I recently ate at The Melting Pot in Columbia in celebration of our wedding anniversary. The food itself was fine, as usual, though our service was subpar. The server that we had was lackadaisical and ended up leaving the bouillon boiling in the pot for so long that it burned, leaving a horrible smell at our table and in our clothes. I’m guessing that this was just an isolated incident, though. We’ve been to the restaurant before and had much better service.
It was an extremely busy night as it was New Year’s Eve so there were lots of people there celebrating. Everything felt busy, and rushed. It wasn’t really a relaxing environment that I’d enjoy to ring in the new year. Our waiter was doing his best despite the fact he probably had a ton of other tables to wait on. They might’ve been understaffed that night. The food was... not worth the money. We chose the bourbon bacon cheddar cheese and it was truly disgusting. It tasted like you mixed cheese into bourbon. We asked for it to be changed and ordered the Old bay cheese, with no alcohol, and it wasn’t much better to be honest. It was extremely salty. We ate it anyway because it was a $200 meal. The meat was so boring I barely even ate it, nothing special about it and the sauces were blah. I didn’t enjoy the food at all. The dessert was alright but by the time it came out I was so starved I just wanted to go home and order a pizza. Then the check came... $171 for boring food and a busy restaurant? We were forgot about most of the time and our drinks weren’t even refilled more than once. It wasn’t worth it and truly if I could get my money back I would but I didn’t want to cause a scene. I wouldn’t recommend this place for anything besides if you wanted to eat a very expensive four course appetizer before going to an actually decent restaurant for dinner.
