The Med at La Valencia Hotel Ratings and Reviews
The location and food were excellent. Service was slow by any measure. Initial greeting by server took an extended time. That said, drinks arrived timely after we ordered. We ordered a mixed green salad to share as the first course and that took more than 20 minutes to arrive. It was clear that other tables were being given celebrate status treatment as we watched them receive attention from our server. When the entres arrived, the food was outstanding and the recommended wines were excellent.
February evenings are still chilly in La Jolla and at one point the outdoor heater near our table was taken away and given to another table. All the heaters were in a row down the center aisle and this heater was pulled out of the main aisle and placed within a few feet of the table just seated. Nobody asked or even acknowledged the need for a move.
The Med at La Valencia hotel is a gem! The outdoor terrace has amazing views of the La Jolla shoreline. They have an extensive wine list. Our waitress was amazing! She made us feel as though we were her only table. We both ordered the lobster roll. Mine came with a generous side salad, and the other came with tasty french fries. Everything was just perfect!
This review is only critical of the food itself.
Service and ambience and cleanliness were all excellent.
We were given a beautiful table right on the corner of the balcony, closest to the water.
My partner chose a lobster roll , which was excellent,
and a salad of mixed greens, which was not.
My salmon hash was poorly put together- the salmon and potatoes very over cooked, and eggs were slightly over cooked. I was surprised. Salmon hash is not that hard to prepare.
It also turned out the hot water for tea was lukewarm.
There are a lot of beautiful places to dine with a view in La Jolla. I would have to think twice about returning, if I’m planning to eat....
Business was slow on a Saturday night. It must be off-season. There were just a few occupied tables.
There was only one waitress who was busy and appeared to be doing everything, but she was very professional and nice. We sat by a window, and there was a large pink rag left there from window cleaning. Nobody noticed until we asked to have it removed. (See photo.)
Drinks were good. Bread was unremarkble. Our main courses were delicious, but I wish my dish was a little hotter. It was just luke warm, but very tasty.
The ocean view was excellent, and it was an overall nice experience.
This was our first time dining at The Med. We based our selection on the reviews I read before we visited from out of town. Our reservation was for 7:15 pm. The food was good but we won't be returning. The appetizers we chose were delicious, mushrooms and a mediterranean hummus platter. We didn't eat one of our main dishes because it was very fishy. I cook scallops all the time and these were not good. Our server didn't charge us for the dish which was nice. The prices were fine and the service was pretty good but overall I wouldn't go again. I think this might be better as a lunch experience especially because you could then see the view because at night in the winter its too dark to see it.
I have been here so many times before and been nothing but ultimately impressed. Today the salmon was very fishy and not fresh tasting. I must say when we pointed out to the staff however they took 2 entrees off of our bill and brought us a special treat. They really tried hard to make it right. If you go for brunch and want the what is usually delicious salmon belly hash, please ask if the salmon is very fresh!
Mixed review. Quiche was lackluster and the fruit on the plate was not ripe or flavorful. Server forgot my order of an english muffin.
When we were seated the table was dirty - a few areas were sticky. I asked the busboy to wipe the sticky areas and he wiped one area. I had to ask again to wipe the other areas.
I ordered a Bloody Mary which came with tired looking lemon and lime wedges that had spots on them.
Sorry to give such a critical review but that was my experience. Thank you for the opportunity to give you feedback.
We went to the Hotel for an enjoyable New Years Eve dinner at $150 per person. The service was very slow and very inattentive. The servor appologized several times for not being able to get to us as she was over-booked and they were grossly understaffed.
Very disappointing for the Med!
We could have had a better experience with just as good food with much better service at the Marine Room or another upscale venue for the same or less money.
Food was just ok , and very overpriced . 3 small pieces of chicken with about 4 tiny halves of asparagus for 34 .00 was disappointing. The service in the evening dinner was very good. The service for breakfast was adequate . Missed the way it was years ago. Coffee in mug to sit down with in the morning was fine in the bar , but I missed the the past, when you could be served in a nice cup and saucer. Still had a nice time staying there for one night.
The restaurant accommodated our request for outdoor seating and when it became chilly offered us blankets and the option to move inside. We stayed outside and had the most magnificent view of the ocean. The hostess and waiters were excellent as was the food. I will definitely return!
We enjoyed our first Thanksgiving dinner in Southern California. This restaurant had a terrific buffet that featured an excellent mix of traditional Thanksgiving food as well as other items that were fantastic.
Additionally the service was top notch and live music really made the evening.
I would highly recommend The Med for any special occasion.
Surprisingly, the WORST experience I and my work colleagues have ever had at a business dinner, especially at an expensive restaurant like this. We waited 1 1/2 hours after we were seated before ANY food was served (we had to ask where the food was at that point), and then the food, across the board, was either overcooked (scallops rubbery), average or worse tastewise, and/or ridiculously small portions for the price. Had to ask for a discount for entire table twice. So disappointing, as we were all really looking forward to this dinner. Beware of this restaurant - way overpriced, and worse than overrated.
