The Market Place Restaurant
We celebrated our 10th anniversary at the Market Place on the recommendation of the staff at our hotel. We were promised delicious farm to table food and were not disappointed. The staff were very knowledgeable about the food and gave us great suggestions. We also enjoyed the live music! Thanks for a memorable meal and evening.
Best restaurant in Asheville! Just about everything on the menu is recognizable. Too many of the better restaurants in Asheville have items or combinations that I have never heard of...
Have had many good meals here, but this last time both our dishes were well below the usual standard. VERY disappointing: overcooked, over spiced, over salted. It was also as if they had been reheated from the previous night.
Picked The Market Place based on the menu and it did not disappoint. Food was terrific and nicely arranged, cooked perfectly. This was the best dinner experience we had overall in Asheville based on the food quality, selection, low noise levels and excellent service. Wish we’d saved room for dessert but the appetizers were too tempting to pass.
I try to leave only good reviews, but the experience with this restaurant was so disappointing, that i just can't not to express it. I made a reservation for a party of 4 for 7:15pm for Saturday night. We arrived at 7:15pm sharp, but 3 of us, since our 4th person was driving from far and was running late. The hostess was not able to find our reservation and she asked me to find my confirmation, which i did and it was for 7:15pm that day, however, apparently in their system my reservation appeared at 8:15pm. The hostess though said that we were lucky and they had a table for us... Which makes me feel - Why should i feel lucky, if i made a correct reservation and arrived on time?
Anyway, we were seated, still 3 of us. We ordered drinks and appetizers and waited for our 4th fried to arrive. She took some time, since her drive was 6h and she came at app 8:15pm, which is 1 h later and i completely realize that. But once again, we were ordering drinks and snacks and thought that this is fine. However couple minutes before her arrival, our waiter approached us with the question when our friend is coming and if she is not coming soon they would need to ask us to leave or to order entrees. To say that i considered this being rude is to say nothing. The start with the reservation was not good already and now we got this... But fine, our friend came, we ordered more drinks and entrees. 2 of us ordered ravioli and 2 of us ordered risotto. I was excited to try risotto.. but oh well, it seemed, that that day was not our day at all. When risotto arrived it definitely didn't look like your regular Italian risotto. It was some sort of grits looking rice hot cereal... the taste was also more gritsy than anything else, i would say not any flavour at all... another part to it was that the piri piri spicy sauce was all over the risotto! not on a side, but in each and every corner! i am not a big fan of extra spicy food and nothing on the menu indicated that this dish is super spicy.
Everything met our expectations: service, food, and ambiance. Would definitely return.
This was a great dining experience. The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. Looking forward to going back soon!
Service was prompt and friendly and the food was excellent!! Would definitely book a table again when in the area!
The food is always delicious and service is excellent. Love this restaurant. The food is pricey but very high quality!
Awesome food and ambiance !
Great food, attentive service, inventive drinks from the bar, good music - couldn’t ask for more. One of my continuing favorites in Asheville!
Absolutely everything we ordered was delicious!
We had never eaten here before while in Asheville, but read some good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We had a lovely meal and a great server. The food was delicious and we really enjoyed the whole evening. We will be back next time we are in Asheville!
Everything was top notch. Food, service, drinks and atmosphere
I enjoyed the restaurant overall but wasn't super impressed with the food. The cinnamon sugar doughnuts were not quite sweet enough to balance well with the tartness of the raspberry sauce and my BLT was good but there was just so much biscuit that it was hard to enjoy. The drinks were tasty and we enjoyed the service.
Given the number of excellent food options in Asheville, I wasn't blown away by The Market Place, unfortunately. Our starters were good, but the risotto was awful...don't know if the kitchen was having a bad night, but it was disappointing. I think because the expectation was so high it was a letdown when the food wasn't on par.
Was not a good experience this time - all food came out room temperature - fries not hot and soggy. Scallops room temp. Ate separately from date because they did replace the scallops - this time scallops seared - hot on the outside and raw on the inside! The restaurant was not crowded, so no excuse.
Great food! We had lamb/pasta...and snapper...fantastic! Waiter was really helpful. Wall Street in Asheville is a cool area. Would definitely recommend this spot.
While an intriguing idea, the BLT on a cathead biscuit was just too dry to eat comfortably. I kept wishing for something to relieve the parched feeling of the sandwich. Service was very good.
My wife and were there for our anniversary. I had the scallops and my wife had the ravioli. After my first bite of the scallops I put my fork down and almost went into a food coma. Scallops, creamy grits, bacon and tomato gravy. My wife raved about her ravioli and both agreed that this was the best food we had ever gotten anywhere. If in Asheville this is a must destination!!!
I haven’t been to Marketplace in a long time as i have moved away. I felt just like home again as soon as i walked in the door. The charcuterie was PERFECT. i love that they are using Allen Bentons 10 yr ham and also Sequatchie cove creamery Cumberland as i am now living in Tennessee.
We then had the locally foraged golden Chantrelle mushroom gratin, and also the PEI mussels. Both were items that i would normally or order because they would typically be laden with cream and butter. They did not disappoint! While they had their share of butter and cream, they were amazingly satisfying and exactly what i was looking for an a vacation.
I then had the fresh pappardelle with braised lamb. I am so used to restaurants over seasoning and a lot of times that is due to chef insecurities or also customer preference, however everything spoke for itself. I really enjoy seeing these locally sourced ingredients sing for themselves instead of salt having to help them along. My friend had their play on steak frites. A BEAUTIFULLY cooked NY strip with truffle and herb fries.
Personally, as a chef i have to pack my own lunches and try not to eat restaurant food as it is purposefully overly salted or cloyingly sweet, or deep fried and marketplace is not afraid to purchase great food, and let it just be itself.
A jazz band was playing during our meal. They had a few Grateful Dead covers and some good calm experimental stuff. A lot of fun.
I am sad that i forgot our servers name... he was fantastic and a lot of fun, but he kept recommending fantastic drinks so... yeah. Overall AMAZING food in a very approachable, and comfortable atmosphere. The food is a 10! I can’t wait to go back.
Excellent restaurant in downtown Asheville ! This was our second dinner there and it was great on both occasions. Very interesting menu and the chef is top notch as are the table waiters. Highly recommend this one and we’ll be back again soon !
Amazing all around!
Excellent inventive dishes. Pork was out of this world, mussels very tender, and peach n ham appetizer wonderful!! Waiter was in formative and attentive. Thank you.
Food great. Service too rushed. We were in and out in 45 minutes. Would have appreciated time to enjoy the ambiance and food.
Excellent all around! By far one of my favorite restaurants in Asheville!
Amazing food! We shared starters and loved it all. Really great location and pretty inside.
Great service and fresh ingredients served creatively. The heirloom tomato salad is wonderful!!
The pork dish was excellent but the other two entrees, the ravioli and the pan-fried fish were mediocre. I have come many times to this restaurant and always get the pan-sauteed fish. In the past in has been juicy and delicious and hot. This night it was barely warm and very dry.
The desert was the stone fruit crisp. The server said it was peach but it was mostly nectarine and instead of a golden color it was pink. Lots of juice and not much crisp.
This has always been one of my favorite restaurants and I am sure I will come again. I just hope to see consistantly good food coming out of the kitchen.
Sunday brunch menu has good selection. Venue is nice. Service is good.
We love The Market Place. We've been having special dinners there since they first opened on Market Place. Still one of our favorites. Great place to celebrate our 45th anniversary.
Dear friends who were visiting told us they wanted to take us out for dinner..totally unnecessary, so I wanted this to be especially good. And it was. Our server was charming and knowledgeable and knew that certain dishes had gluten (gluten intolerant member) and no mistakes were made, except for a very slight error that apparently hadn’t been passed on to the waiter regarding an appetizer.
Food was fresh, served with lovely garnishes, and a perfect size....not enough to feed a family and not so sparse that you leave hungry..
We will return!
We had a really enjoyable lunch. We shared the Wood Grilled Burger that had the right amount of smoke, pickled onions, cheddar on a brioche bun and oh that tomato jam really put it over the top. It is served with crunchy potato nuggets that have been well seasoned. We split an heirloom tomato salas with house made pesto and mozzarella. It tastes of summer!
Our server was professional and personable.
Food was fresh, creative and delicious! Enjoyed the quiet atmosphere so we could all talk and catch up.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable dining experience. The waiter was excellent. The food was quite good; however, the risotto was slightly undercooked, and not remarkably flavorable. The fish, although tasty, smelled dreadfully. We enjoyed listening to the guitarist who had an extensive repertoire in a variety of styles.
Loved this place! Food was amazing! We care about knowing where our food comes from so this place was perfect. Love that they support local farms and know their ingredients. Service was wonderful as well. Would definitely go again if we visit Asheville again.
Lovely restaurant with very tasty food served by knowledgeable waiter. Worth coming back to.
I was underwhelmed by the food, the waitstaff was stuffy, & the total bill was WAY too expensive for what we ate. I would not recommend going here. The highlight was the rose wine & the company of my Mom & daughter.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal (we were celebrating our 40th anniversary). We shared an order of mussels for an appetizer and the broth and cook were delicious, seasoned perfectly. I had the wood-grilled pork shoulder -strawberry bourbon glaze, farm & sparrow farro, spring vegetables, asparagus butter. My spouse had pan roasted sea scallops - farm & sparrow jalapeno smoked cheddar grits, bentons country ham (left the ham off as he is vegetarian), tomato gravy. Our only complaint (and it was minor, but we did mention it) is that the accompaniments for both our dishes were a bit on the cool side. And the waiter informed us that the pork shoulder dish is changing slightly to take advantage of summer items such as corn and peas. The noise level was quiet in today's terms meaning we were able to have a conversation without yelling or fighting music - and it was live that evening and another welcome factor - it was actually background, pleasant and not disturbing the meal.(Open table uses "average" for low to moderate noise, which I find amusing. I find the average these days is screaming at each other, so this was a very welcome and refreshing change). I would say they did everything right for creating atmosphere, excellent dishes, fine service for upscale pricing.
I have had dinner here twice. Service and food were very good both times.
