About The Marine Room
For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition.

The Marine Room Ratings and Reviews
I don't know whether it was due to it being Thanksgiving or it is an ongoing issue but our service was extremely poor. We sat at our table for 25 minutes with no menus, no water, no bread, and no waiter. Things did not get better from there.
I might have chalked it up to one mishap, but the inattentive, poor service lasted the entire meal. We all skipped starters for fear of how long it would take. I might also have considered an extenuating circumstance (such as wait staff calling out sick or a backed up kitchen) but there was no explanation, apology, or concern expressed. We never had water refills, drinks took another 15 minutes, and we practically had to beg for bread and our order to be taken. We were never offered another round of drinks, which are high profit items, so that was strange. All in all, one of the oddest experiences I have encountered.
It's a shame because the location, food, and reception staff were all great. We won't likely be back because of it.
Extraordinary food and view from window tables, however, they will not take requests for a window table as part of your reservation no matter how many years you have been going there, how far you call ahead, how far you have come, or how special the occasion. That is too bad because where you sit makes a great deal of difference in the immediacy of your experience.
The high tide brunch is advertised well but for Marine Room Level I was expecting more sophisticated dishes, not just sausage, bacon , nasty pastry and an omelette station. I feel like there was a big miss on protein dishes, was also not happy that poached eggs were pre-made. They were cold. On plus the blonde hostess was distractive talking to her co worker and not following up with a seating so we ended up waiting after our reserved time for around extra 25 minutes forced to come up to her and remind her.
Very pleased with our overall experience. Even though we didn’t get seated right by the window as requested, there really is a good view of the water from any table. Our meals (salmon and chicken) were excellent, as was the service. Would definitely return again.
The place was semi-empty but my fiancé and I were happy for the quiet. There was one bartender and three waiters, our waiter spent most of our meal chatting with them and ignoring us. The food was decent but we both felt ill afterwards. The view is nice but I doubt I’d even return for a drink.
A perennial favorite. You can always count on a good meal in a beautiful setting. While the service was good, I was surprised that the dish was not described as it was presented. The dishes are generally more complex than steak and lobster and as a consequence, It would have been nice to be told what the dish consisted of as it as presented. Otherwise, the plate is dropped off with nothing more than a bon appetite. If a question arises about a particular item, you have to wait until the server checks back with you. This is a service provided by the majority of fine restaurants and The Marine Room could certainly benefit from this as well.
The view is the selling feature. However it’s one component of 3 when I️ evaluate a restaurant. We were seated quickly but then the long long waits began. Drink order (both order and delivery) took an excessively long time. Tableside Cesar salad was outstanding. We ordered steak entree and lobster tail (each 59 I️ think) tail was good. Steak while cooked properly was just an ok cut and overwhelmed my dark gravy sauce. Coffee and Jameson brought but Jameson had off taste. Dessset was frozen rock hard solid and we had to ask several times whether it was coming. $700 bill + tip. Just not worth it
Our table was right up against the window the picture window! The view of the Pacific Ocean is undeniably the best! It is absolutely gorgeous! The food was amazing! Each dish had so many flavors and so many things going on with each dish it was just a festival! The presentation of each meal was just like a piece of art it was almost way too pretty to eat! Our server Bryan was amazing friendly and gauging efficient professional polite! The Marine Room is definitely 5 stars the prices are higher but it is a very lovely venue and the location is amazing the view is just breathtaking and the meals literally are a piece of art from the chef
For the money (and reputation) I expected more. Nothing special about the food at all. It was like going to any hotel buffet. The restaurant interior needs to be updated and the restroom was messy. The view of course is spectacular. For such a great building it was a shame that the experience didn't match the location. Most of the staff seemed depressed. My valet complained about lack of tips… It was a strange and disappointing visit. I had really been looking forward to my b-day brunch. It wasn't a disaster, apart from the view, there was nothing memorable. Will not return. Would not recommend.
The food and service were great. Unfortunately our table was right next to a large room where there was a private party taking place. There was only a curtain separating our table from the party. The party was loud and raucous and spoiled what otherwise would have been a very fine meal and evening. Management promised to handle the situation but produced no results. It is a fine restaurant but I would recommend checking before you go to make sure you are not seated next to the private party area. For the prices charged there is no reason to subject dining customers to that kind of noise level.
Lobster Night. Lobster was the slimy, plumped-up with preservatives type. If you want an excellent, huge, fresh lobster tail for half the price, Fish House Vera Cruz, San Marcos. Marine Room service was quite indifferent, very unfriendly, almost non-existent. View makes it all worthwhile...?
My husband and I went to the Marine room for our anniversary dinner. The view of the ocean is spectacular, and the food is absolutely amazing. I had the lobster bisque and ahi tuna, both of which were incredible! We will definitely be back!!
We went to celebrate a birthday and had two children with us 8 and 10. Although the restaurant looked like it may not accommodate children it was in fact great with them, very understanding and willing to get any food or combination we asked for.
A truly gtreat place for everyone
Service was absolutely disastrous. First of all, the host/hostess was not around when we first arrived at the restaurant and nobody asked us why we were at the restaurant as we were walking around the restaurant looking for the host/hostess. Waiter was nowhere to be seen after food was brought to the table. Even when we wanted to pay at the end, we had to go find someone to bring us the bill. This was a very disappointing experience for us both. We could have easily left with no gratuity.
Phenomenal experience! Would recommend and go back in a heartbeat! Setting is spectacular but course after course continued to amaze my husband and me. Staff was very attentive, accommodating and helpful. Don't miss this one.
I don't get why this place is so popular. The decor is lack luster and not much personality. On top of a $300 bill, they charged us to park the car. They had seasonal drinks but waitress was unaware of what they were. We had a great window seat and liked that the people dining dressed properly.
