About The Marine Room

For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. This place used to be the “go-to” restaurant in town for style, ambience and cuisine. It has gotten predictable and outdated. Food is not so special to warrant the prices

Always a wonderful experience even at Low tide, great view of the ocean though high tide dining is spectacular. The service and food have both improved over the years and our dining experience this weekend was exquisite. Thank you Marine room for a memorable evening

Everything was excellent! Food was amazing especially the lobster and sorbet. Highly recommend this place for seafood. Very romantic and well priced for the quality. I will say that the only negative was the smell. They need to upgrade the carpet... it smells very old when you first walk in - strong odor of grandmas house.

Exceptional food. The seafood is cooked to perfection. Crispy skin on the outside of the fish, savory buttery texture.

Good seafood is expected, the French influence sets it apart. You notice it as your main has many small tastes ans flavors. You could tell that each dish was carefully planned by a skilled chef.

However, be prepared to pay an exceptionally high price. Even more than your average luxury restaurant. A prix fixe menu would help.

The location in La Jolla is great. Awesome views. Can't get any closer to the water. The food was just decent nothing amazing. There are other area restaurants with far better tasting dishes. You only go there for the view. That's my opinion.

The martini terrible not cold enough the worst I had there . The soup was really bad like the one you buy from a supermarket . The main course was good
The server was so stiff like he hate his job and his customer . Not a smile . I had dinner there many time before never got this experience . Lately most restaurant high end still charging a lot but they are missing a lot of details

Marine Room is comparable to other “fine dining” establishments in San Diego: generally pleasant but subpar compared to fine dining in major metropolitan areas within the U.S.

The new Year's Eve menu was a 5 course fixed menu for $175 per person. This included dinner, dancing to a nice 5-piece band and occupying your table through midnight. It did not include beverages, tax, tip or even a champagne toast a midnight. The Kobe beef premiere entry was overcooked and totally mushy . The other 4 courses varied from very good, lobster tail and appetizer, to poor, the soup. The service was intermittent and condescending. For us it was a disappointment and certainly not worth the cost.

Beautiful view on the beach. Would have been nice to know in advance that there was only a price fixed menu on New Year‘s Eve. Options were varied, and we all enjoyed the experience but ate and spent much more than planned. Also disappointing to see hats and noise makers being put onto the tables being reset for the next seating. We asked for ours and were told that they are only for the late seating. Again, no information was given in advance. I simply made a dinner reservation expecting the regular menu. As ‚Open Table‘ is monitoring customers so diligently, I would hope they would be just as diligent with the restaurants.
I‘m sure this is a wonderful restaurant but our experience was definitely not what we expected.

We went the night before New Years Eve so that we would not feel rushed. This worked out well as we had a fabulous meal and we were in the restaurant for 2.5 hours. They were about 75% full. The service was perfect and they even gave us a free desert to share. It was a perfect evening to celebrate the new year and also watch the ocean wave crash on the beach which could be seen from a large percentages of the tables.

Beautiful spot for celebrating our anniversary. Service was good but a touch slow & strange as we had two main servers and a bus boy but we ended up not getting great service from either of the two main guys. Not bad but it just seemed like we were an afterthought with all the other tables these two were also helping. Food was beautiful and tasty and I know this sounds crazy but I thought the value of the food was good considering you didn’t need to order sides as each dish came with sides. All in all good. Would go back for the view for sure.

We had dinner for 6 and enjoyed the experience! The food and service were great.
The staff also made accommodations for the wheelchair chair in our group, so we easily made it to our table through a back entrance and everyone was comfortable.

One of the best restaurants I’ve been to.
This was our 25th anniversary I was hoping for a ok view of the beach, good food and to be somewhat romantic. We watched the waves roll in while eating a tofu (vegan) dish that was to die for. The service was outstanding. They went out of their way to make us a vegan desert to top it off.
For those of you that are ok with sporting out some cash and want a great dinner this is the place. It’s truly a hidden jewel and I’m lucky I found it. Hard to do being I live in the Phoenix area and barely knew anything about the San Diego area. Recommend you bring cash for the valet. Cost was $10. Gave him a tip too. It was worth it. When it was all said and done it all ended up costing around $160.. worth every penny. Thank you....

We last dined at the Marine Room several years ago. In the intervening years, it's our assessment that this restaurant has rested on its laurels way too much. When our party of six, including two primary-grades children, arrived there was no staff waiting to receive us. Finally, we walked down stairs to the "lounge" area, hoping to find a host or hostess who would seat us or at least tell us where to wait pending being seated. Eventually, a young woman told us to go back up the stairs where we could make an order for a cocktail, etc. We did so and waited for quite a little while before the young woman who had given us that instruction arrived to take our drink order. After another longish wait, she arrived with a tray of drinks but spilled two of them. Eventually she returned with drinks for the two people in our party whose drinks had been spilled. She never got around to wiping the spilled beverage from the seat of the chair where the spill occurred. The same young woman shortly thereafter announced that our table was ready. It was a table by the window and did have a good view of the beach/ocean.

Both our assigned waiter and the older man who appeared to be the "captain" were practiced and attentive. We expected this to be an expensive restaurant visit, but were still stunned at just how expensive it was. Because another member of our party insisted upon paying the entire tab, I'm not sure what the total bill (with drinks -- including four Shirley Temples for the children) was but I know that it was very expensive. For an expensive restaurant experience one should expect better than we received. Moreover, there was a stale "old food" smell in the restaurant that should not be encountered in any restaurant, let alone a restaurant in the expense category of The Marine Room.

It was Christmas dinner and the wait for us was over half an hour even with a reservation. They should have planned better knowing they had crowds. I even called a few days before and they said they had expanded seatings due to demand, but they didn’t plan accordingly. My crab cake was room temperature and the filet dish was over salted.

We have enjoyed dining there in the past. We dined on Christmas and the restaurant is now off our list. We started with soups which were reasonably good. My husband ordered filet of beef which was fair, but over cooked. I ordered turkey which was one of the worst restaurant meals I have ever ordered. The turkey was dry and tasteless. It was covered in some type of gravy which was worse than canned gravy from a grocery store. The side dishes were soggy and tasteless. Both meals were nearly cold.

Service was very attentive and the table was by the window like I had requested. They turned it so we were both facing the window at a slight angle. The menu, though more limited because of a special holiday was very interesting and the waitress was knowledgeable about the wines. I enjoyed the chef's special creations beautifully presented...tasty and moderately unusual. We used the valet service.

One-of-a-kind is a true description of the Marine Room. It is a grand old-style dining venue known for its location right on the beach, its fine and expensive food, its service staff of aging men who maintain strict rules of discipline, or so it seems. The ocean view is fabulous, but less expensive if you just access the beach. With all of the reasons not to spend your time and money there, it still remains the most impressive restaurant in San Diego and should not be missed. It will provide a lifetime memory for any diner.

Also the parking valets were great. I don't know if I've ever seen valets run anyplace else. A true Five Star Restaurant!

We have not been here in quite some time, and decided to start a tradition for Christmas Eve. While the food was truly exceptional, the service was not what we expect when dining at a 4 $ restaurant. We frequently had empty water glasses, and waited too long to place our initial order of wine. We will return, as I'm still in awe of each course of food that I selected, but not sure if this will be our Christmas Eve dinner.
