Very nice restaurant and spa. Well worth the drive for dinner or a spa visit.
The Resturant is superb and the wait staff is excellent but not stiff. I had the filet and it was done perfectly with freshly made bernaise sauce with whipped potatoes in marrow gravy. Dessert was a vanilla creme brûlée. Delicious! Great Margaritas and nice wine selection.
Disapppointed. We ordered Talisker scotch (which is on the single malt scotch menu list), neat. Were served Chivas on the rocks, with no explanation. Wine pour was skimpy. Website says required attire in the dining room is "business casual." A loud party of four was seated next to us, men in shorts and polo shirts (tails out), women in similar attire, one wearing a baseball cap. So much for me wearing a jacket and tie and my wife in a nice dress, celebrating our anniversary. The food, however, was very good. Kudos to the chef and staff. But the service wasn't quite up to the price level and the disregard for the dress policy shows a lack of standards. Given the number of other restaurants to choose from in the area, I doubt we'll return here. But if we do, it will likely be for a casual evening in the lounge, not a pricey dinner in the main dining room.
Unfortunately we were unaware that dark, nice jeans paired with a blouse are not considered "proper attire" and we were not permitted to sit in the nearly empty dining room with only 5 other people present. We were shunned to the bar to hunch over a low table and eat our anniversary ($120) meal.
Management should alert people (especially those that make reservations 2 months in advance) that the restaurant is not only proper, but formal attire required. Completely ridiculous.
First time at the Manor House. We found it by chance one Sunday drive months ago and decided to give it a go to celebrate a birthday. The ambiance and staff couldn't have been more pleasant. The variety and uniqueness of the Sunday brunch offerings was exquisite. Not to slight the Andouille gravy with scratch biscuits (fabulous!) but the chocolate/salted caramel tort was absolutely the sweetest treat we've had in a very long time. Definitely worth the risk of sneaking one or two out in a purse! Oh yeah, we'll be back.
Everything was great except the service was so-so. Our server was nice enough, but he didn't know the menu well enough (had to look at notes for the special and didn't know what types of ice cream were available for dessert) and had a hard time delivering our drinks on time , filling our water glasses, and setting the table with the silverware before the next course. I used to be a waiter back in the day at a nice restaurant, so I'm more aware of this issue than most customers. Like my restaurant manager used to say, "Know your mise en place"! Everything else was great. Atmosphere was warm and inviting and the food was great. Would definitely come back, but servers need more training and experience, which I put squarely on the manager.
My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary at the Manor House Restaurant this past Saturday evening. We weren't in a hurry, and enjoyed the atmosphere very much, but the service was incredibly slow for each part of the meal. It took about 10-15 minutes for a waiter to approach us, and delayed amounts of time for each course, including drinks. My filet was very cold when it came out. We didn't want to complain on our anniversary so we tried to just enjoy our time, but for the price of the meals and drinks, the service was not up to par. We also let them know on the reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary, and there was no mention of it at all during the entire meal (not a huge deal--but it's always a nice touch when restaurants acknowledge things like that when you chose their restaurant as a place for celebration).
We stayed at the Poplar Springs Inn and ate a celebratory birthday dinner in the Manor House for my wife's birthday. We dined on a Wednesday evening and had the room to ourselves. Our server (Vickie??) was very attentive and doubled as the bartender.
With a recommendation from the inn's clerk, we both ordered the filets and they were PERFECT-fork tender and served on a bed of mashed potatoes. The other entrees, especially the scallops looked great, but we opted for the filets and were very happy we did. During the dinner, the restaurant manager (Mr, Kim?) visited us to assure everything was right and he comped my wife's dessert, a delicious lemon cake garnished with fresh berries. After dinner, the property manager invited us to join her for a nightcap, but we demurred with thanks.
I'd definitely recommend the inn and restaurant for a romantic getaway. The grounds are lovely, very quiet, and expansive. The staff is uniformly friendly and welcoming.
DO NOT GO!!! If I could give it 0 stars I would. The service is atrocious, and the staff poorly trained. My husband and I had reservations on a Friday night at 6:30 for our twelve year anniversary. We called ahead to check the dress code and were told "business casual", no shorts, jeans, must be nice slacks and top. When we arrived, while the hostess greeted us by name and wished us anniversary, our waitress did not once congratulate us. Additionally, she had no idea what was on the menus when asked, even something as simple as what vegetables were being served with an entree. She didn't bring out bread, and when we asked she said "we don't bring bread out until later". We ordered appetizers and while we were waiting, a loud, obnoxious group of drunk women came into the dining room, sat themselves, and were immediately greeted and brought bread. The worst part was one was dressed in jeans and another had a baseball hat on! So much for a dress code. I was so upset, disappointed that what we wanted to be special turned out to be anything but that. My husband did speak with the manager, who was sympathetic but gave the excuse he had only been on the job 11 days. It took my husband a good 10 minutes just to find him in the first place. We walked out, without eating anything. The experience was a disaster and I would NEVER recommend it to anyone. It is NOT a fine dining experience. We got better service and had a better experience at a Chinese food restaurant we ended up at, mainly because it was Friday night at 7 pm and there was no place to go we wouldn't have to wait. Overall, it was a HUGE disappointment, as the grounds are lovely and the spa is top knotch.
I was celebrating a milestone birthday, with my girlfriends. We had a wonderful time! The ambiance, service, food, music.. The musicians even sang Happy birthday to me! We felt like we were having our own private party in a beautiful setting! Thanks to the staff for a wonderful evening. Can't wait for the next time!
The Manor House at Poplar Springs is such pretty place to go for a special occasion.
Unfortunately, when we were there for Sunday Brunch, a wedding party was in another room.
Brunch is served between 10 a.m. & 2:00 p.m. Our reservations were for 12:15 p.m.
Alas, at 12:30 p.m., the selection of cheeses, fruits, etc. on the "mirror" was devastated. We had shards of leftovers, and the mirror was nasty.
The seafood was devastated, there must have been a huge display on ice (?) but the only thing left was sushi, made shabbily, and falling apart. The store-bought salmon was slammed down on ice directly from the package. It was disheartening to find that the accompaniments for the salmon, (onions, capers, bagels, cream cheese) were not even there.
What I found nicely done: Louisiana Shrimp & Cheese Grits, the quality of Bacon, and the Baked Hash Browns. The sausage remained untouched by all because it appeared undercooked.
Oh, it would be great to have it reinvented with a Sausage & Seafood Gumbo, kick the jalapeño heat up somewhat. Heck with the sushi. Redo the salmon slices, nicely done with the above.
Get rid of the mirror, and put it the fruit in bowls. I used to be a caterer, and have done this, but someone has to be on top to keep the mirror clean, and replenished.
Enjoyed bringing visitors to dinner for a special occasion. The Scallops were great, Filet excellent. Nice atmosphere. Only suggestion is that there was a singer in the bar area and it was competing with the music piped into the restaurant area. Should probably do one or the other.
One word sums this restaurant up...OUTSTANDING! We went for the brunch and it was well worth it. The grounds are beautiful and so is the restaurant. Fresh ingredients and outstanding taste. Service is impeccable. Take a ride out and you will not be disappointed.

Service: While the staff was pleasant, the service level was not at all commensurate with what you will pay.
Food: Tasty, but again way overpriced. We felt the quality and presentation were on par with Claires at the Depot in Warrenton, but came with a ~30% uptick on the price. Our bill w/20% tip came to -$175, and we only had three cocktails between my wife and me.
Atmosphere: Unpleasantly warm. Sadly, the areas away from the main dining room (hallways leading to the restrooms, restrooms themselves, etc.) were comfortably cool.
1. Claires at the Depot would be a far better choice for having a tasty dish, fair price and staff equal to the task.
2. Field and Main in Marshall, VA if you want amazing food, approachable atmosphere, well-prepared cocktails, highly competent service at a very reasonable price.
The bar and wait staff are polite and friendly but extremely inexperienced. Service needs to be improved for the quality of restaurant that it is. We did not stay at the inn or access the spa- we live locally and went to dinner for our anniversary.
There are several other restaurants of this caliber that we would prefer due to service and food.
We had dinner here as we were staying st the inn on the property. I had the lobster bisque and the duck. The bisque was unremarkable and the duck was downright bad. It was overlooked and not flavorful. My husband had a lobster pasta of some sort and the hanger steak. The steak was tasty and cooked to his liking. The lobster was eh. The best thing by far was the bread and the dessert. I told our waitress that I didn't like our meal and told the desk person at the inn as well since the bill was so expensive and billed to our room. She never offered any kind of discount which was disappointing. They should have taken my entree off the bill since I didn't eat it. We won't be going back to manor house.
A wonderful spot for a special occasion. Country elegance and fabulous food. We've enjoyed New Years Eve and Father's Day Brunch at this restaurant. Both were outstanding. They have always delivered excellent service. We plan to return with friends. We encourage you to try this special place.
My husband and I spent the weekend at Poplar Springs Inn and Spa for our anniversary. We had an amazing weekend! All the staff at the Inn were fantastic, especially Marianne, the GM, and we really enjoyed Sam at the bar and Nancy our waitress at the restaurant too! I had their seared sea scallops and they were cooked absolutely perfectly! My husband had the hanger steak which I'm sure he will get again the next time we go back. Their dessert chef is phenomenal! Marianne went above and beyond to make our stay amazing!!
