The Malt Shovel, Brearton, is an award-winning 16th Century Country Inn, 10 minutes from the centre of Harrogate and signposted off the A61. With ancient oak beams, flag stone floors and wonderful open fires, this characterful country pub has been recently shortlisted for Yorkshire Dining pub of the Year 2014. The Malt Shovel has gained a wonderful local reputation for offering excellent food, friendly service and great ambiance. The menu is not like that of numerous franchises. It comes from individual passion where all dishes are made from scratch using the finest local ingredients and the great food and unique atmosphere make this Inn well worth seeking out.

The Malt Shovel is well known for it's fish dishes, and, as we smoke our own fish and meat on site, this is often a popular choice for parties. We can offer buffet food or three- and four-course sit-down meals; the choice is yours. Please call us so that we can tailor our menu to your needs.

We have three unique dining areas, and can offer private dining for parties of up to 30 in anyone of these on any night of the week. If you would rather take over the entire pub for your event, this can also be arranged, and we can seat up to 60 in the dining areas, and utilise the bar for your drinks reception.

The wife had the beef cheek - I was given a sample by her. OMG - hopefully this makes the regular menu rotation.

Very nice experience with friendly helpful staff. Menu choice very good and wine excellent. Would recommend The Malt Shovel to friends. Nothing was too much trouble.

A nice country Gastro pub with very good fish. The service is not particularly polished but polite and familiar. The toilets are basic and could do with refurbishment but clean enough. The standard menu is limited but the specials which contained a lot of fish choices were excellent. Four adults - the bill with wine and including service was £150.00.

If you want value for money and a good hearty meal, plus excellent beer and plates that will suit a trencherman but are overloaded in the eyes of others. I think a major improvement would be to serve vegetables separately

This place is a real gem. Definitely stop by if you are interested in quality food and drinks, friendly service, and oddly affectionate neighborhood cats outside.

This was my birthday celebration with my eldest daughter who's father at 6 months old was evacuated to this lovely village with his mother and sister in 1939 from Leeds.. I would like to know a little bit more about the village do they have a historian? The village is easy to find and the Malt Shovel is an old 16th century building which has been added to over the years and will be back to explore more in the future. I even tried the clams - delicious.

Delicious food, very well presented. Best ‘chunky’ chips I’ve had. Missed having the veloute to start, loved that touch on previous visits.

We went for a roast lunch on Sunday and the food was very very good. It is definitely on the expensive side but we would go again.
