One might expect the food to be so so given the location and history of the Ahwahnee Hotel but both the food and the service was outstanding. In the off season reservations are really not necessary for lunch but probably still are for dinner.

The 'Awhanee' dining room is, of course, the reason for going here. It's stunningly beautiful and indeed majestic. We went for lunch, to save costs, and because the meatless choices were slightly better. The vegetarian onion soup was a winner. All our other orders were good, but not great. The fettuccini (with 4 vegetables listed) was extremely fatty and included very few vegetables. The crab dip was yummy but extremely fatty, and included insufficient crostini. The two orders of Rainbow Trout with vegetables came with markedly different quantities of (rather plain) vegetables, although both slim. Service was excellent though.

While many Yosemite visitors (whether at the Majestic Yosemite/Ahwanee or not) go for the massive Sunday Brunch, the weekday breakfast is the real value. The buffet is basically the cost of an ale-carte item plus any beverage. Once you order juice or coffee, all the extras on the buffet are essentially free (and all you can eat).

My wife, who hates breakfast, and would never order eggs benedicite, was converted by the great, light hollandaise sauce, which has a balanced, lemon flavor, with just the right amount of spice. Typically at restaurants, hollandaise would be a gloppy, tasteless yellow sauce ladled over everything. Not so, making it just about perfect and worth a try!

After saying that the food (which includes great fruit, waffles, omelets, etc.) is worth the $20ish price tag, I would recommend that the price worth the view even if the food blows.

Oh, and the coffee is amazingly good, and giving a run to most coffee houses, especially if you like decaf.

Great dining room. Service was good. I was very late for my reservation (almost 1 hour!) and the Dining Captain seated us anyway, which was so appreciated.
Ordered beet salad and the steak. Both were good, nothing to write home about.
I ordered the signature cocktail which was meant to come with a carabiner attached for us to keep - the carabiner didn't come and so I asked about it and was told they were out. It would have been nice if we were advised that upon ordering, but not a big deal.
Pricing is expensive (steak was $47.00 and salad was about $16 from memory?) but we did our research and expected it. Overall, it was a lovely evening.

Here’s the real deal folks.. everyone wants to try this place because of the history, ambiance and for some the convenience.
We were the family of 4 that fall into the history and ambiance category. So, we ordered appetizers first of French onion soup and
roasted cauliflower. The soup had wayyyyyy too much cheese and wayyyyyyy too little broth. Not good. The cauliflower was okay but not for the price.
That’s the key word here. The prices are steep so we expected better. And here’s the main reason for the poor review. We were the 2nd or 3rd family seated for dinner right after they opened and it took OVER an hour to bring out our entrees!!! We asked for more bread to hold us over. Main entrees we ordered were the prime rib, sturgeon and steak. The prime rib was fatty, the steak was too salty and the sturgeon was a verrrry small portion. AND the meat entrees weren’t hot! Lukewarm at best. Our waiter, Sam, however was very kind and gracious and actually totally entertaining and most importantly apologetic for the less than desirable experience. They comped us two of the entrees. We really appreciated that and it made us feel a little better knowing that they cared enough to do that. So, if you must eat there, know that they have quite a few hiccups in the service and food and don’t expect a 4 or 5 star experience. You can always just walk into the room and take pictures instead. You’re welcome.

The food is much improved in quality and choice since our last visit a few years ago, glad to see vegetarian options. The room is just completely stunning, with views of the rock faces from the windows. It has the feel of another era, with surreally large redwood beams and beautiful painted accents echoing Native American designs. The piano player playing the night we ate was exceptional- he played beautifully and it sounded amazing in that space.

Our dinner dining experience at the Majestic dining room was underwhelming. The room itself is magnificent but the service and food presentation is subpar especially for the cost. For such a special place, you would think it would be top notch! If the dining experience cannot match the ambiance and the cost, perhaps it should be re-evaluated. When we stay at the Ahwahnee again, we will not have dinner in the dining room.

We attended the Taste of Yosemite event and stayed in the hotel. Our overall experience was wonderful! We are planning on attending this event again. We loved it and the hotel has done a nice job updating and adding a bar/restaurant and a sweet shop. The food at the hotel could be refined a little to have lighter, California style cuisine. The flavors could be a little heavy after a couple of days. Room service and breakfast buffet are excellent. Every staff member was a delight. Great stay at The Majestic.

Overall, the Majestic Hotel is truly special place, the ambience is extraordinary. Breakfast was very good, superior quality eggs and bacon and sausages and toast and fruit, endless coffee and tea in a real pot. Dinner was so/so...crab cake starter, yummy chicken with vegetables and disappointingly underdone salmon with a tiny bit (5 kernels) of corn compote and 2 halved cherry tomatoes. Pricey for the quantity and quality. The waiters are very nice, attentive yet unobtrusive. I must say some of the maintenance people are oblivious to customers, leaving the Great Hall doors wide open in winter, shouting into their walkie talkies, rearranging and shoving furniture around while patrons are trying to relax in front of the fire.

We have stayed at the hotel at least 4-5 times over the last 20 years. It’s probably the nicest place to stay inside of Yosemite. Our room had a beautiful view of Yosemite Falls from the window. It’s a great location to go out on walks/hikes from with the family. The Rooms are dated - although there is a room renovation planned for 2018. The dining hall is beautiful with big tall windows to take in the views. The food was good as well.

The setting is the best you can hope for in a wonderful space at Majestic Hotel in Yosemite. But it is NOT the place to go for lunch. Save money and go to another spot. The menu is very limited and the food our party of 5 ordered was hit or miss. The "cheesesteak" sandwich was dry and disappointing. What's worse, they served it with frozen french fries that must have been well beyond their "use by" date. They were terrible, even for frozen, and the kitchen staff should have known to toss that bag away (if they'd bothered to do any quality control.). Dinner was much better and worth the very high price (equal to a fine steakhouse). Basically, they do well with stuff they prepare; For example, onion soup is excellent. But their "cost cutting" shortcuts using frozen foods detract from the experience.

...Ate two dinners and two breakfasts here. All meals were mediocre--small portions, unremarkable flavors, burnt quinoa entrée and crab cake appetizer, fruit cups past their prime freshness, lukewarm soup, and Peet's Coffee that does not taste like the Peet's we enjoy at our local Peet's. Server assistants (beverages) were attentive, but meal servers were not.

Thankfully, the ambiance and views were especially lovely... Otherwise a disappointment.

The food was good but not anything special for the price. I thought it was overpriced for the amount and quality you got. The service was great. It was odd that the restaurant was not full and yet they were turning people away who didn't have reservations. There were quite a few empty tables around us during our meal. The restaurant is pretty. Not sure I would go back for dinner though. I suggest going there for lunch, just to see it.

We visited the Ahwahnee restaurant to celebrate a wedding anniversary. My expectations are always low for food service in the National Parks -- I assume that people come for the scenery and not for fine dining. But the Ahwahnee remains an exception. Our food was creative and expertly prepared, the service staff was prompt and well trained, and the ambiance was elegant and comfortable. I appreciate their attempt to retain some decorum in dress for the dining room, and though my wife and I came prepared with a clean set of nice clothes, many of our co-diners chose to dress in sweats and dirty PJs. Such is the evolution of modern public life in the US! All in all, this is a unique and fine dining opportunity for which we will return again.

We have fortunately eaten many meals in the dining room here over the years. Recent
reviews by others focused on food and service versus value not being as good as they would
have hoped. My wife and I would not agree. Our meals were excellent though not the best
weve ever had and the service was outstanding. We paid no more than at fine restaurants
in southern California where we are from and ITS YOSEMITE, the setting and ambience
are remarkable.

My son and I were vacationing in Yosemite in December 2017 and I reserved a table at the Majestic/Ahwahnee for a special dinner. Given the high-end nature of the place, I had expectations for a great meal. Except for the beautiful ambiance, however, the experience fell short.

Our waiter knew essentially nothing about either wine or food beyond a word or two, like the sturgeon is "sweet" and every wine is "good". He mumbled so we could barely hear him. He wanted to charge me $7 each for small tastes of wine by the glass, although there was nobody who could advise me on which to choose. The waiter was easily the least knowledgable server I've had in memory and seemed totally unfamiliar with the conventions of fine dining.

Okay, food. To start the meal, we asked for gluten-free bread and the waiter brought us a bowl of cracker crumbs that clearly had been dumped out of a box. There were a handful of whole crackers and the rest were in pieces. I should note here that it's common for restaurants to keep gf bread in the freezer and warm it up for the occasional customer who wants it, which would have been fine with us. No self-respecting restaurant serves a guest cracker crumbs.

The first course was the highlight of the meal -- calamari in a basil and garlic sauce ($17) that was small, but quite delicious. My son enjoyed his New York strip steak and potato ($47). I ordered the sturgeon and found that it was indeed "sweet," as the waiter advised. It was also a bit simple, except for the two bites of kumquat in the sauce, which really made the dish hang together. There was no vegetable or anything on the plate, just a smallish piece of sturgeon. I would have expected better for a $32 entree. If it weren't for the big pile of cracker crumbs, I would have left the meal hungry.

I had been wanting to dine at the Majestic/Ahwahnee for years, so the good news is that I can check it off my bucket list. I wouldn't go back though.
