The Majestic Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
In spite of a busy lunch crowd, food and service were top notch, as always. I was a little skeptical about the BBQ sauce served with the hanger steak, but it was a nice compliment rather than overpowering the excellent flavor of the beef. The jicama slaw is positively inspired!
Disappointed in the food. We went for a Valentines date night looking for something special. I ordered the 14oz prime rib eye and it was under cooked-ordered medium and it came mid rare to rare. Not terrible, but for $56 I expected it to cooked perfectly and be seasoned well. It wasn't. 2 dinners and a bottle of wine was $200. I wanted to be "wowed" and just wasn't there. I've had better food at a chain restaurant for less than half the price, and I hate eating at chain restaurants.
As always the food was spot on. I had a Manhattan and an old-fashioned, both were made to perfection. I rated it as a quiet place because we were upstairs, downstairs is less conducive to conversation, but the jazz is always good there too, this was just not "that kind of party".
Food was excellent, service was good and the ambience was inviting and comfortable. Word of caution though, as I was hoping to see and hear some live Jazz music, we were seated upstairs (Jazz is downstairs) and could not. Unless you specify where you want to sit when you make the reservation, you may end up getting seated where no live music is playing. Should specify downstairs if you want to sit in the Jazz area or upstairs for a more quiet experience.
Actually, this was the second time in a week that I dined here. (Long story) Both visits were great. We had more time on the first visit to sit and listen to jazz (downstairs); the second time we had theater tickets and ate a bit faster. Had the same waiter both times. Food came out in a timely manner and was hot. Our waiter got all of our orders right. He was very friendly and efficient.
We enjoyed the music and service at brunch. We were a bit too close to a large group who were loud and it was hard for the waiter to service that group without bumping into our chairs. My dining companions enjoyed their food of the majestic breakfast (granola pancake was very tasty) and the steak eggs benedict but I made the wrong choice with the spinach salad.
This was my husbands and my valentine dinner. Pleasant atmosphere but didn't care for the seating. Always have hated the half bench half chair tables. Table were decorated nicely though with candles and fresh flowers. Sitting a little close to our neighbors though for comfort and privacy. Food was marginal. Decided to splurge and get the Wagyu steak and share it since it was so expensive. Did not enjoy the steak at all. Seemed very tough and seemed undercooked to me but my husband seemed to enjoy it. I had the mac and cheese and broccoli sides which were delicious. Ended up with a piece of plastic in my salad which was apologized for by our attentive waiter. Was given 2 free desserts which I assume was to make amends for the plastic. i had the cream brule and my husband the chocolate pie. Neither was great. Cream brule was the wrong texture. More like a pudding than a custard. Chocolate pie was almost bitter but once again my husband seemed to enjoy it. Maybe my taste buds were just off that night. Our service was excellent though.
Overpriced, slow service, mediocre food. For $50-$60 per plate, we expected a delicious dinner. Steak was tender but flavorless and baked potato needed another 20 minutes in the oven. The house salad and bacon-wrapped shrimp appetizers were good. The waiter was slow to take orders and check on things. The booth cushions were in poor condition. For this price I recommend J. Gilbert's or JJ's on the Plaza. We were very disappointed and wanted it to be good since it is such a historic KC restaurant.
This was probably one of the best restaurant experiences ever. Saturday night, filled with people but not over-crowded. My 12-year old son and I ate in the the basement jazz club. Our server Clint gave my son a quick history of speakeasies and jazz clubs and the combo led by Bram Wijnands was amazing. A great lesson in jazz...the real deal. Service was exceptional, food including a ribeye was perfect. Custom-made drinks were reasonably priced. Terrific restaurant for both locals and out-of-towners looking for the quintessential KC experience!
We had high expectations of your restaurant and were very disappointed. No parking available, valet parking would have been appreciated. Our table was next to the restroom, downstairs and we asked to be moved (which we were) but were told “it’s a busy night and that’s all we have available,” even though there were several tables for 4 availabile. Service was very slow, from drink order to main couse, which wasn’t hot. The butter and cheese in the twice baked potato didn’t even melt. This was our first time there and it was for my wife’s birthday and the experience wasn’t a fond memory.
Went here to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday. The maître d greeted me by name as soon as I arrived. Our waiter (Barbee) was great. I eschewed making all the Barbie and Ken jokes. The food was great. I can still taste that spicy tenderloin and along side it the twice baked potato and broccoli . The mussels and French fries appetizer was really special. I've had to chain myself inside my apartment to keep from going back
I have been to Majestic a few times and really like it but went for restaurant week meal and was very disappointed in food quality. I got pork chop. Tasted great but was very thin and small and 1/3 was fat and grisly. Potatoes were bland and not cooked through. Not a great meal for $33.
Went for Sunday lunch during Restaurant Week. The ambiance was great, love the historic beauty of the building. There was a pianist playing quietly up front which was nice. Wait staff was great. The food was pretty good. I say pretty good because I ordered a filet and it was cold on my plate (as in the butter topping it wasn't melted at all). I told the waiter, who promptly whisked my plate away to be taken care of. When my plate came back, they had just re-heated the steak instead of replacing it - this is fine with most foods, but not with meat in my opinion. So, the cook on the meat was more medium well than the medium I had requested. I kind of expected a manager to swing by and check in, but that didn't occur. So the soup and sides were really good, but the steak was only okay.
I will try again, though because the rest of the experience was great and I believe in giving second chances.
I ate here last year for lunch during restaurant week and had probably the best salmon I’ve ever tasted. So I came back this year for restaurant week so I could try the steak for dinner. Turns out that steak they offered isn’t what they normally serve, which is unfortunate. I can think of a number of places - including Outback, that serve a better steak than I had that night. Now, I did also eat at Stock Hill during Restaurant week and had the most unbelievable steak ever. So it’s not like I don’t know what a good steak is. I don’t know that I’ve ever been so disappointed in a restaurant that is supposed to serve one of the best steaks in KC. Perhaps they do- just not during Restaurant Week. The steak soup was good as was the strawberry ice box cake.
We used to frequent the original Majestic steakhouse at the original location. Had not been to the “new” location yet but Restaurant week gave us the opportunity to try it again. We will be back ! Steaks were excellent and the Salmon was perfectly prepared.
