We eat here whenever we attend the Bluegrass Frestival at the Strater Hotel. Food and service was excellent. The Food and Beverage manager stopped by the table and seemed sincerely interested in our feedback. Very enjoyable.
Came here based on reviews. Visiting the area to check out Fort Lewis College. The waiter basically gave me a 22 oz steak after I told him that was too much and NOT what I wanted. He then proceeded to act like a jerk and not remove the raw, huge meat from out tab. Not a great experience. Too bad-
Easter Brunch was even better this year than 2017. Many choices, including made to order omelets. Besides all the expected dishes there was an excellent cold smoked salmon, really delicious french toast, and my favorite, a spinach frittata with hollandaise sauce.
After all of the above, mashed potatoes and too much roasted prime rib, I was still able to manage chocolate mousse and coffee.
When full, this beautiful room is somewhat noisy, but it's all happy sounds. A bit expensive ($36) , so we save it for special occasions and are never disappointed with the quality of the menu, ambiance and staff.
We celebrated our anniversary here. The food was fantastic, wait staff helpful and atmosphere quiet and cozy. The chef was also accommodating with my food allergies. Overall a great dinner!
Out of town with family...had a nice time and the food was good but the waiter didn’t really know much, he had to keep checking.
It WAS Valentine's day, but the service definitely left something to be desired. We waited 45 minutes for the bread & drinks. I had the winter squash cannoli & it was too 'one note' on the flavor. I got bored eating it. My husband had the Roasted & Char Grilled chicken, though , & he thought it was moist & tender & that the mashed potatoes were good. I was disappointed that the Bananas Foster was not being offered that night. The Pear Cocktail was delicious though!!
We made a reservation for Valentine's Day. Menu was weak and same as always. Waitress
was weak. I asked for water and she finally brought it. Cocktails were good but quite another
Did not offer bananas foster and used the cart for the beef special which was a ridiculasly long wait.
It's time to change it up!
Our Chef, Safari prepared melt in your mouth Table side Chateau Briand!
We were a large group on a Friday and Snowdown. The service was disjointed and slow and my food was not hot. It was a major hassle getting the bill and the server got really cranky rather than helpful. 2 couples with us had a major problem sorting their bill and actually just settled rather than try To sort it a third time.
Mahogany is supposed to be fine dining but seems to not be able to manage fine food when busy. Expensive for the quality and presentation which were mediocre.
This is one of my favs in Durango and the service is friendly and helpful!
All in all, the food was good & we had a nice time. I've eaten a lot of NY Strips in my life, & I was disappointed to find mine a little chewy. It was our first time there, & the restaurant had been recommended for its great steaks. I came resolved to have a good Ribeye or NY Strip. The Ribeye only came as a Southwest option, with a lot of SW toppings. Not for me. The NY Strip came as a steak oscar version. I've had veal oscar, & the steak oscar was good, but I just wanted a plain steak without the toppings. My wife found the duck quite good. Many restaurants will give you some bread, with butter, as part of the meal. At our meal we had to pay $5, I believe, for bread. I think a few slices of bread, with a little butter should have been part of the meal, no charge.
Just walking into the Mahogany Grill is always a pleasure, the room is so beautiful.
Service is good and since we go at 5 pm the atmosphere is quiet and leisurely. Later
the pace and noise probably pick up some. My companion chose the chicken entree,
pronounced it properly done and delicious . I enjoyed a soup with black eyed peas to
celebrate the new year, before a rib-eye steak entree. The steak was soooo good, as
always, but what surprised and delighted me was the vegetable accompaniment: a
chili relleno in a thin, crispy batter, with pumpkin stuffing. The pepper was fresh, moist,
about medium hot (so not for everyone), and the squash was perfect with it. Must try
this at home! There is a very tempting dessert menu, an excellent selection of wines,
and very good coffee. We've been coming here for many years and have never been
We went to a New Years dinner last night, they were offering a special 3 course menu. The food was good (a bit too salty overall), but I felt like we were being rushed. I wasn't even done with my first course by the time the second course was set in front of me, which is not what I expect of a nice restaurant. The waiter asked if we liked the food, but was walking away before we response. I probably wouldn't go back again. I don't think the high price was equal to the overall dining experience.
Dinner reservations were at 9:30 and they were out of the oysters by that time. Little disappointing.
What has happened to your kitchen? It was New Year's Eve. A set menu for $55.00. The appetizer was okay. A bite meager. The entrée was fair. Had the surf and turf. It was served cold. At best there was a teaspoon full of crab. The moose dessert was served in a soup cup. Poor presentation. Do not plan to return. Would not recommend to anyone. Very disappointing meal. Everyone at the table felt the same way. Your kitchen really needs to get its act together.
Best beef we have had in years. We have dined here a number of times over the years and the food, ambience and service have always been excellent.
We were really disappointed in breakfast, especially for the price. We ate here two days in a row because we were staying in the hotel and the second day was Christmas day and nothing else was open. The food was on par with a greasy spoon diner, which is OK sometimes, but not when you're expecting better. We cancelled our Christmas Eve dinner reservation because we were afraid we would be disappointed. Went to The Palace instead.
Christmas Eve dinner. Fixed menu. Mediocre food for the $65/person price. Prime Rib was bland....maybe needed some au jus. Too much food thrown on a small plate. Prawn appetizer had too much "pomegranate jelly", although the idea was good. Good wine selection and beautiful interior.
I always enjoy eating here and we were just in the neighborhood and got a reservation just like that!
Country ham was unrecognizable, very dark, tough, dry...couldn't chew. Sides not good. Very disappointing for $50 per & Christmas Eve special occasion. For a pre-planned 3 course meal, 1 1/2 hrs. is too long to wait for meal. We won't return.
We have dined at mahagony grill before, so it was a no brainer for my husband to plan my 60th birthday dinner there (wonderful food, great service).
My birthday is on Christmas and since this was a big birthday and all I wanted was to be with my son and his family for my birthday dinner he made reservations at the mahagony grill.
The menu was preset so we had limited choices. We like prime rib so that’s what we all ordered. The four adults at our table all ordered prime rib...we had to ask for steak knives (prime rib shouldn’t need steak knives) and horse radish (we were offered it by our wait person during our order but we had to ask for it after the arrival of our food. we were told by the person delivering our food that it was cooked into the juice ...(( no way....)) and by the time we got it ....sour cream-ish mixture....our meat was cold).....
I knew my prime rib serving wasn’t good, but I hesitated to ruin the mood by complaining. When I finally asked my family if they were enjoying their prime rib they all expressed their disappointment in the meat.
My husband spoke with the manager and he told my husband no one else had complained... since our reservations were at 5:30 pm it’s no surprise the manager didn’t have a lot of input. He did comp us two of our meals but we still ended up with a $100+ bill for basically a salad and a desert.
We loved dining at the mahagony grill in the past..... we hope someone there will read this review and take it to heart. Your customers count on your kitchen knowing when something isn’t up to standard and fixing it before it ruins a special evening...
Had NY steak, sea bass, and chicken. Steak was tough and flavorless. Sea bass pairing vegetables were almost inedible. Chicken was good. Do not recommend.
Hadn't been here in a while so we thought we would try it out again. The service was very slow and the restaurant was not very busy. Waiter not very attentive had to try and get his attention as he walked by. The salads were delicious and the steaks were pretty good. The bar was slow for alcoholic beverages as well. Dessert was unimaginative and plain. Won't go back. There are many other restaurants in Durango that have better food, service and prices.
I thought the prices were too high since the last time we've eaten there. No bread was served with the meal, you had to pay extra. They used to do a fun, little secret drink when you came in. I miss that. Food is always great.
Fantastic Thanksgiving buffet! Always great food, wines, service and atmosphere. And that level of excellence carried through for the Mahogany Grill’s Thanksgiving buffet. A wonderful range of foods, all freshly prepared and replenished in a timely manner. The Mahogany Grill is a special Durango experience not to be missed.
We were there for the Thanksgiving buffet. It was delicious. There were many entrees to choose from and all were prepared to perfection. It was pricey at $39 per person plus drinks but for a special occasion it was worth it!
Ambiance was great However were very disappointed in our meals. Our steaks were rare when we ordered medium well. My husband sent his back and upon return it was still rare. Manager did remove it from our bill but it really spoiled the evening. Not a good place to order steak, very pricy! The service was average. We will probably return when visiting the area again in hopes of improvement.
Obviously the new culinary team is doing very well and elevating the food to where the Strater should be. GO NEAL!
Very nice evening, loved the Elk, ambiance was pleasant.
Great food/service, always a pleasure to dine out at Mahogany Grill, one of our local favorites.
We had a lovely time at the Mahogany Grille. What a wonderful setting. The staff was attentive, and the food was palatable.
We had dinner at Mahogany and first enjoyed the quiet elegant charm of the historic building. I ordered the trout with polenta and tomato and it was fabulous. My husband had a salad with grilled chicken and it was perfectly fresh and tasty. Both of us ate every bite but couldn't fit in a dessert. We liked everything about the meal and will love to go back.
We were late due to a train engine problem on the Silverton to Durango train and this wonderful restaurant was very accommodating and understanding. Excellent service. Wonderful, friendly service. Great food. Beautiful dining room and hotel. We had heard about the Banana's Foster served table side. Our favorite. They had a wedding party going on and were busy but our server provided this treat after getting permission from the manager. She went out of her way to make us happy and it was so good and appreciated. Thank you!
We have eaten at Mahogany several times and the food is always good. Unfortunately the service this time was well below par. Our server was very nice, but somewhat inexperienced and totally overwhelmed by having to take care of too many tables.
We are long time patrons of the Mohogany Grill but had a bad meal, food and overall bad experience about 2 years ago. We decided to try it one more time and it was amazing. We had the falet and it was very good.
My husband and I visit Durango once a year over Labor Day weekend, and have always eaten at The Mahogany Grille, Unfortunately, we keep forgetting why we should by pass this restaurant. It's almost always a hit and miss. This time however will unfortunately be our last. We waited forever for our soup and salad ( at least 30 minutes). As we were sitting there we noticed a table sending back their steak because it was too raw. Upon receiving our dinner ( My husband had the trout which was the "hit" ) my dinner special which was two separate filets, and unfortunately both more raw than med/raw . I ate one which was cooked a little more than the other, but couldn't even cut through the raw one and didn't want to saw myself a piece. As we sat there another table who had shown up shortly after us, barely got their food, and the very unhappy woman sent her steak back as well... being too raw. Our waiter, and the manager were having quite the time, trying to make up for the raw loving cook. The hotel is wonderful and full of history, the decor is fabulous, and again, our waiter was okay, but the wait time, and then the hit and miss is just not worth our precious few while we are in Durango.
The food was exceptional, and the setting was appropriate for the area, (Old West). The only negative was the unnecessary delay in bringing out dessert because the dinner crowd had thinned out substantially by that time.
Food mediocre at best. Way over priced. Vaudville show and restaurant doors left open so noise level obnoxious for fine dinning. Service was ok.
The service was amazing. Our waiter knew all there was to know about the features and was very professional. The entire staff was helpful and attended to all needs (we are a high maintenance group of people at restaurants..) Would recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Thanks for a great birthday evening Mahogany Grille.
