The London Bar & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The interior of the London is on the depressing side. An institutional pastel green pervades, and the table tops are wipe-clean glass. It is redolent of the canteen of a hospital. Our waiter was more fit for a diner than for haute cuisine, and did nothing to elevate to the level a $85 per head meal deserves. The crowd is a mix of hotel guests, businesspeople and midtown tourists. The maitre d' was at least solicitous when i mentioned the substandard service.
The London used to have a fantastic restaurant. What is left is a low-ambiance, cavernous lobby bar with the feel of a cruise ship. The food options are very limited and exceptionally overpriced. It felt like a string of compromises that do not result in something they should call a restaurant.
I used to love this place but hadn't been for a couple of years. It's changed a lot. It used to be a Gordon Ramsey offshoot. I knew it no longer was, and the food is still mostly good - it's now beautifully presented pub food - but in expensive tiny portions. The ambiance used to be plush - I remember it being a lovely winter refuge - but the lighting and decor now seem rather cold (did they change the lights?). Three loud guys were watching a sports game at the bar, making it feel like a pretty average hotel bar. The initial welcome was warm but the rest of the service very stiff. Overall, kind of odd. I don't think I'll go back.
Abysmal service - inattentive and disinterested. The place was empty and we had to send up a flare to get attention and order. Dishes left on table way too long before clearing. Food was adequate. It was better when it was a Gordon Ramsay restaurant from the food perspective but service was not that great then either. For The London, which is a fabulous upscale hotel, this kind of restaurant/service seems like a huge disconnect.
Well it started with our very dressed up family being sat at the bar area even though we made a booking for 5 in advance... then the server was as unenthusiastic as we've experienced in our week in NYC! Then the food was really poor, in fact the best way to describe it is - "a heated up frozen meal". It makes me think, is this place being set up for a certain former owner being called in for a Kitchen Nightmares program??? Would make good viewing Gordon! Everything was disappointing, the place seems to lack any inspiration and the staff seem depressed. And guess what? It rubbed off! We all left dressed up and depressed! Luckily or unluckily for us, we just got back into the elevator and went up to our uninspiring hotel room. 😖
Walked into a lovely dining area but that was the end of all that was good.
The service was horrible with the waiter showing up about 20 mins. later to take our order after his initial approach.
The bathrooms were deplorable!
The food was average.
Will not be recommending this restaurant.
My husband took me here for my 40th and well, had an okay experience, though there was so much police activity outside which is not the restaurant's fault. Now what was their fault was the salmon I ordered. It had absolutely no taste at all. It needed a some salt and pepper or something to give it some flavor. On the bright side, my truffle fries were on point. My husband had cod fish and that was way better than my salmon. Desert (strawberry cheesecake) was very good too. While we were leaving I did see the group Bel Biv Devoe walk in. I grew up listening to them, so that was cool. I don't mind going to this restaurant again, but definitely will not order the salmon.
We went there thinking it was a Gordon Ramsey restaurant. Only through crazy internet digging did we find out it wasn't. A Saturday night, in NYC, and the place had three people in it and one looked like he worked there. The prices were insane and the food menu was minescule at best. We ordered drinks (only because we had a gift card) and left. Almost all places in NYC are busy on a Saturday night. Do not bother.
I was somewhat disappointed with the London Bar having been previously and found it good. The restaurant was pretty quiet, not expected as this was a Thursday in restaurant week. Service was fine, drinks list decent but the food, not great with main courses coming out luke warm. The taste was alright but nothing special. I would only go back for a drink at the bar
Saved by the bartender and great food. Had a very nice time at the bar, pre-dinner. Upon being seated, seats uncomfortable and overall dining area looking "tired." Server was not friendly and attentive; he was just there. Food was very, very good. Not sure the food is worth our returning to this "tired" looking space. Might return for drinks, per the quality and service at the bar. Bartender was extremely friendly with us, and all patrons at the bar. Nice touch...
For some reason the hostess couldn't find our confirmed opentable reservation but despite the little hiccup we had a nice meal. Food was good. Server was new but other than a little lack of experience/knowledge of the menu she was attentive but not intrusive. We were all pleased with the service.
This was a treat for my 50th birthday which turned into a disaster, we where sat quickly and the waiter made his way to us and took our drinks order which we ordered cocktails, we then ordered a starter and main for me and my wife, the starter was ok but half way through eating that the mains came out, we where also waiting to order wine so at this point I sent the mains back and called the manager over to complain about the attitude of our waiter which to say politely was shocking! We then got a bottle of wine with no ice and the main meal came back out, my wife had pasta and I had steak with chips and salad, the Manager checked on us and he said they had no ice buckets but brought out a glass of ice (mmm??), the steak was chewy and my wife's pasta was bland which was when we noticed there was no salt, pepper or anything else to maybe help flavour this very poor food. Anyway we asked our by now new waiter who at least was helpful and we got pepper and salt damp in pots but heh ho we knew by now not our night! We then did get a free desert but with the meal costing overall 106 dollars and the desert not great either we gave up and went back to our hotel. Unless something happens to sort out the poor menu, poor food and bad attitude of certainly 1 waiter I would definitely not recommend you going here!
Me and my two close friends from grad school enjoy a nice long meal every could months for 25 years now! London Bar and Restaurant is our new favorite!! We had excellent food at expected prices and the noise level was perfect - festive but not loud at the time we were there (Friday 8-10). We really enjoyed and could talk as long as we wanted!
We booked a dinner here because we though that it was a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. Open table still describes it that way, but when we arrived we were told that they were no longer a Gordon Ramsay affiliate. The food was okay, but priced as a high end NYC restaurant. Portions are small but nicely presented. The menu is limited. It was a cold and windy day and since the restaurant is adjacent to the lobby, the cold wind blew through the restaurant making it uncomfortable.
My husband and I wanted a casual dinner before a play, so we went to the London Bar. The food is just average, but very expensive. Nothing impressive. I guess the bar scene would be good, if you have an expense account. The service was also very slow and inattentive.
The food and ambiance was very good. We ordered the four course fixed price meal and was not disappointed. Nice wine selection and great bar service. The service seemed a bit rushed at first despite having an early reservation and the restaurant was about one quarter filled. In all the food was excellent with nice sized "small plates". We would recommend this restaurant.
We traveled an hour and a half just to go to this restaurant. We had been there when it was Maze restaurant and it was wonderful. We assumed since this was still a Gordon Ramsey restaurant that it would be just as incredible. We were wrong. The hostess seemed like she was too good to seat us. The waiter became frustrated when my partner could not decide between two selections and instead of making a recommendation, he walked away with a "I'll be back when your ready". Once we ordered, we no longer saw the waiter. Food was brought in a timely manner and that was the last we saw anyone until somebody cleared our plates and asked if we were ready for our check. I should mention, this was 5pm and the restaurant was not at all crowded to justify this kind of service. The positive was the drinks were exceptional and we had made a reservation through open table but called to see if we could get in earlier and they said yes, just walk in. The negative about that is they did not relay to open table like they stated they would.
I hope, by some far out chance, Gordon Ramsey reads this review. I know the standards he has for his work and this was not even close. Even the food was, just ok.
