The Local Ratings and Reviews
Such great food and great service. It was my birthday and brought 13 friends with me. Given our large size, we experienced none of the issues I’ve had at other restaurants with a large party. Everyone got their food at the same time and it was all correct. They were very attentive with drink orders. They even brought me a brownie with a candle at the end. Overall, wonderful place to bring a big group of friends.
The food was pretty decent but service was slow and my husbands steak was served extremely rare (not medium as he ordered it). By the time the server came back to check on us, the rest of the table had already finished eating their meal so there was nothing that could be done to correct it at that point. We had ordered lots of apps and drinks and the server did not even offer to take off a single thing from our bill despite the fact that my husband was not able to eat the steak at all. Considering it was his birthday, I was pretty disappointed by the whole experience. The rest of the group described their meal as "mehh", meaning not terrible but not great either.
Our daughter recommended we try The Local, when we game up for a UVA basketball game. We were pleasantly surprised, when we walked into the restaurant. It gave us a warm inviting feeling, right away. We were led up stairs, where there was a cosy fire going in the wood stove. The menu had lots of option, local produce, a nice selection of wines. Everyone chose something different and we were all pleased with our meals. The presentation was lovely. We will definitely come back, next time we are in town. Thanks for a wonderful evening.
I really enjoyed my food at this restaurant, but it was incredibly crowded (and noisy) because of the holiday. There was definitely NOT enough staff to handle the crowd, but our waiter really tried very hard, and he was quite charming. It was not his fault that they didn't have enough waiters, nor that the food runners often got the tables wrong.
The food was good, and the bill wasn't too bad (especially for Charlottesville). I would probably go back, but definitely not on a holiday.
P.S. The chairs are terribly uncomfortable. We were in the extended part of the upstairs, so they might not have been the regular chairs used for less busy evenings.
Our dining experience was excellent. Not only was the food deliciously prepared, the service was beyond compare. All the staff is well trained, polite, and congenial. We visited on a very special family occasion and recommend the Local to anyone looking for a lovely, tasty experience. Thank you, Matt & your entire staff.
I ordered the Lobster mac and cheese and was not disapointed. Great amount of lobster in a creamy cheddar macaroni. I paired it with a local chardanay. Perfect! The ale soup of the day had the perfect balance of spices.
Tried a hand crafted coctail: the Hinton. Highly recommended. This has become my new fav place for dinner!
Perhaps The Local has jumped the shark. Our server was apologizing to literally every table for something; over cooked steaks, forgotten wine, forgotten appetizer, and my vegetables which were completely raw. Still known as a hot spot in town, we sadly were disappointed and would not recommend. I believe the kitchen may not be prepared to keep up with the expanded restaurant size.
Dinner with son and daughter in law, both of whom are UVA grads. One of their favorite restaurants. Got there early on a Saturday evening. Was not crowded, although there was a steady stream of people coming in while we were dining. We had a very nice, quiet table in a nook by the window. The Local did not disappoint. Our waiter was outstanding, very helpful, and the food was very, very good. As always. Definitely a reasonable value for what they deliver.
My husband and I ate here on a trip through Charlottesville. This restaurant claims to be a farm to table establishment but I would argue with that. It was below par with farm to table restaurants we have visited. The menu listed an entree that was apparently their take on Nashville Hot Chicken with collard greens and pimento cheese mac and cheese. Sounded delicious since we have had the authentic dish so we both decided to order it. When the food arrived the crust appeared extremely dark brown and when we cut into the thigh/leg portions, red juice oozed out. When the waiter returned, we informed him the chicken was partially raw. He collected them and returned to the chicken. I honestly believe they took the same chicken, rebreaded and refried it! My husband said some of the meat was missing from his portion. When it was returned, the crust was solid black and the meat overcooked to the point that it was like cutting a piece of wood! I pushed it aside and ate some of the mac and cheese and collards which were mostly just spicy but not overly flavorful. The waiter asked if we wanted a box and I informed him it was inedible as I'm sure he already knew. They did reduce the price however. I don't think I could visit this restaurant again with all the other good dining choices in Charlottesville.
Disappointed. Made reservations a month in advance but was seated next to the upstairs party room that was occupied. It felt as if we were sitting in the kitchen... Cluttered, disorganized, piles of tableware sitting around. Food was so-so. Was not the experience we expected based on prior visits.
The Local is one of our "go to" restaurants in C'ville -- we really love it. The food and the service are typically consistent (very good to excellent), although we had an exception during this dining experience in that the crab soup -- which we have enjoyed for several years -- was INCREDIBLY SPICY and almost inedible (and it was only barely warm). We asked the server if the recipe had recently changed, or if there was a new sous chef, and he replied that the soup can vary from day to day ("it just depends"). We had never had it vary, previously, but whatever. We'll think twice about ordering it in the future. Otherwise, all was very good.
