We had a great dinner as always. For myself, the Meatloaf wrapped in bacon with mashed potatoes is the go to everytime! Others had local trout which was said to be amazing. Always a great recommendation!
Friction between Hostess and waiter about where to seat us was bad first impression. Hostess "apologized", while complaining about staff.
Scallops way too salty. Meatloaf, Local Burger, Lobster Mac/Cheese all good. Pork Belly Confit App with ginger aioli inspired (although also salty).
Wow! Everything was perfect the quality of the food was beyond perfect! It was such fast service, however you still had time to let each course sit very nice. The drinks were spectacular!
I've always enjoyed dining at the Local. Great location; easy to make reservations. Generally, I like the food, however, at times, I think they miss the mark on what is included with a main dish. For example—local brook trout stuffed with among other things, chorizo. Not a pairing that works for me. I had perfectly underdone seared ahi tuna, but it was served on a bed of noodles that tasted like they came from a Chinese fast-food chain. These odd pairings of ingredients is my only real complaint. Keep it simple and it would be great! The service and the staff are super nice and attentive.
The service was excellent. There was too much sauce on the dishes and mine was too salty, but the meat was very tender and flavorful.
Always love coming here, but for some reason this time the service was ridiculous. It was a wednesday night, not busy at all. Took 10 minutes after we were seated before we had anyone come and talk to us or bring us water. Ordered drinks (we moved to the upper level) and then it took 15 minutes before our drinks came. The other half of our party joined us (2 people). Took awhile before anyone took their drink order. We placed our order for food at the same time and then waited 40- minutes before 1 glass of wine we ordered was actually brought to us. The food was good, but not sure why service was so slow.
The food left a little to be desired, had the cheese board to start, gnocchi bolognese and the fried chicken for main. Seated near the front window, several flies and fruit flies were about, one of which landed in my wine halfway through the meal.
Cheese board was fairly good, grapes on the plate were not super fresh though. Bruised granny smith apples on the side cut into non-uniform strips.
The gnocchi was basically a saucy hot mess. Bowl for gnocchi had the sauce on a quarter of the rim, no attention to cleaning up the plate before serving. The gnocchi itself was tender and generally okay but the uniform texture of softness for all the components of the food made the dish very boring and unappetizing. Just one pile of gnocchi with meat sauce through out; red, yellow, and brown...yum...
Fried chicken was good enough; tender, flavorful, good sides, but pricey for a thigh and drum.
Service was nice but only came around a couple of times, did not refill waters on a timely basis.
Don't know why people were recommending this restaurant to me and my fiancee.
Went recently with a group from work and had a great experience! Half off wine Monday's is certainly a draw.
Informal attractive atmosphere, good menu choices, good food and wine at reasonable prices, excellent service.
Loved everything except the hostess tried to put our party at a table that was too small for 4 people in the busiest trafficked area for the waitstaff to traverse. When we explained we asked for a table by the window, the hostess was snarky and said all the other tables were reserved. When we told her we made specified reservations too, she dismissed us. Eventually we were seated at a lovely table and our waiter, Dakota was outstanding!!!!
My wife and I recently made our first visit to Charlottesville. The B&B recommended The Local. We had a great meal with excellent service. The place is small so reservations are a good idea.
Try the cauliflower and Brussel sprout appetizer; it is excellent! The drinks were very good as well, and the entrees were delicious and large portions.
Be aware... parking can be a bit of a challenge. What I saw was on-street, parallel parking only. And you may have to walk a couple of block to/from, but it is well worth it.
The Local is my favorite restaurant in Cville. I eat there every time I come to VA for a visit. I highly recommend the Hinton (cocktail) and all of the vegetarian dishes, as well as the lobster mac and cheese. My husband loves the steak frites.
Have been to this location before and was at the top of our list on this return trip but we will unfortunately be trying another restaurant the next time we are in the area. The food was good as usual. However, the attitude of the host that greeted us was rude and did not represent the restaurant well. The waitress was not warm and inviting and seemed to rush us along being that they were busy. The restaurant was hosting multiple parties and seemed to be overwhelmed and allowed that to show through in their service. Far from the experience that we had on our first trip.
Food is well prepared. Service was a little slow. They have changed the grilled trout which I do not think is as good as original preparation. It now has chorizo and potato and for me the combination did not taste well.
I took friends and family for my daughters college graduation dinner. Dakota was our server and he was top notch and very professional. The food was excellent. I was disappointed that my group was not allowed to sit upstairs, as we were by the front door and there was not an option to really have a quiet conversation with the activity by the door. In addition, not all the desserts were available on the menu and the hostess rushed our party a bit to leave, so she could seat other guests. I had a reservation two weeks in advance and didn’t appreciate being rushed out. I will rethink making this a place to have a celebration in the future. A dinner for two or casual drink, sure.
We were seated upstairs, only given one menu - the server never returned with a second, waited and waited for our order to be taken, another server took pity on us and took our order. Then we waited, and waited, about 40minutes before our mains arrived - what happened to the starter we ordered? An offer to bring that as well, but my main will be cold by the time I get to it - no answer to that - dont bother I've waited long enough I said. I has a decent duck dish but my companion's meatloaf was dry round the edges from being kept hot. Ordered a cheesecake - the one delivered was different as they'd sold out of the one I ordered, Margarita the server said, what's in it I asked? she didn't know. Not a great experience - I can't recommend The Local.
Third time here (also have eaten their catered food at events). Most recently, took my parents while in town for a visit - it's a great choice for taking out-of-town guests. Healthy, hearty meals that use local ingredients, but with a nice range to please anyone (even picky eaters, as we had with us). I recommend the cauliflower and Brussels sprouts appetizer. Got the red snapper special for the day; included black beans and rice plus avocado sauce on top. Very good, but my only complaint is that there wasn't much meat on the fish, and it felt like I needed something else with the beans and rice (but not sure what - maybe a veggie). My dad got the gnocchi, which I've tried before here - it's a great, safe option (if you like meat and pasta). Hubby got the meatloaf - very dense but good (NOT your typical meatloaf in terms of taste, quite fresh tasting); this is the second time he's gotten this. It came with a generous serving (great value for this meal). Mother got the pork chops (with shoestring sweet potatoes on top) and she liked them a lot. The atmosphere here is cozy and inviting; it's a nice "in-between" restaurant in terms of niceness - not too casual but not too fancy. Part of the restaurant used to be a shoe shop (many years ago). The service is excellent here - they're very good about accommodating special requests. Parking is tricky but we've always been able to find a spot (helps to go early). Will definitely be back again!
We’ve been to the Local several times during visits to Charlottesville over the last 5 years. We’ve always had such good meals there so we were surprised that the food wasn’t as good as usual during this last visit. The fish special was overdone and rubbery and the hangar steak was mediocre. Maybe this was a fluke experience, but it was disappointing.
Delicious food, wonderful service, and charming ambience! Very accommodating with large groups.
Wonderful food and incredible service. We will definitely be going back and bringing friends!
Family had a delicious Mother’s Day dinner at The Local. Service staff seemed a little unprepared but food was excellent. Steak was perfectly cooked as well as Fried Chicken(wish there was a little more chicken) and 2 thumbs up for the meatloaf from the eater. Place as a cozy vibe and Recommend it! (Just make sure you are not in a hurry.)
The room has character! Three of us each enjoyed our entrees: meat loaf, pork chop, mushroom pasta. The house salad was unique and tasty. BlackBerry cobbler small. A lovely place for dinner.
The food was just ok. I think the NY strip I ordered was a sirloin. I will not go back.
The food at the local is quite good however the restaurant itself is a bit dirty, especially the restrooms. Our waiter was very nice...service good. The host had quite an attitude. While not rude, just not what we expected at this restaurant. Overall good....trying to park is a nightmare.
Nice variety of fish, vegetarian, and other dishes - everything was delicious! Very nice wine selection. We sat outside where it was a little less noisy. Very nice overall.
The duck was not prepared well. It appeared that it was frozen when cooked. Could not dicern was the duck was served on.
The night was awesome! We had an outside table in perfect conditions. Great food and ambiance. Who could ask for more.
We went on a Monday night and were pleased to discover on Monday's it is 1/2 off bottles of wine and open mic started at 9:00 which was great fun. They were understaffed and thought the waitress was good service was very slow. Everyone enjoyed their food but I had a trout dish and the fish was incredibly strong, I couldn't even finish it. Must remember Anthony Bourdin's rule of never order fish on a Sunday or Monday as it is usually left over from Thursday's delivery.
Great food and ambiance- kind of felt like the dishes came out too quickly and our server was hurrying us through our meal....but we just took our time.
The Local is an absolute jewel hidden within the Belmont neighborhood of Charlottesville! We couldn't have asked for a better ambiance within the quaint streets.
The wait staff were very professional, knowledgeable, and very prompt. If you enjoy a savory dish, the brussel sprouts and cauliflower plate is a simple but amazing starter. My steak was perfect and her salmon was very tasty as well. The bar staff is quite talented at their craft with an artisan cocktail list that made the night that much better.
Without a doubt, The collective experience made for a wonderful evening while visiting the Charlottesville area and I will go out of my way to return again!
We had a great meal at your restaurant. The food was all excellent.
Been going to the Local consistently now for a year and have never been disappointed! Great staff, food, and vibes. Would certainly recommend the Local for any occasion!
Table by the door is a bit loud, overall nice atmosphere, service & value.
Our server hardly spoke to us to see how the food was or how we were doing but was very attentive when it came to getting our meal paid for and us out the door! The food was delicious and atmosphere was great though!
In general, I really like and support the Local, in large part because it's LOCAL! But the restaurant has really grown and is incredibly loud. My party of four had to be moved outside because we simply couldn't hear anything. The owners keep expanding the venue, I think specifically to get large parties (graduation, etc.) and it makes it not-conducive for people just looking for a nice night out to dinner. Waiters are also rushed and some are curt, and I think that's because they feel the pressure of ALL THOSE PEOPLE! I also feel sorry for the neighbors -- all the traffic and noise has got to be bothersome. I'll continue to dine there, but will try to stick mostly to the other restaurants surrounding it.
Great food, waiter Christian from Georgia was Fab!
Would have dinner there again
Was an OK dinner. Christian was a great server, but I had asked for a specialty cocktail (the Pomegranate Gimlet), I was given a whisper of Hendricks gin with a lot of lime juice, and a $1.00 'gimlet' surcharge...a bit more than the $9 on-line menu price.
My trout was 'average', as well as our guest's meatloaf. The short ribs were OK, but the blackberry cobbler was a coddled combination of hot blackberries and quickly melting ice cream, with perhaps a 'wafer' of a breaded crust (we think). We've been here many times before, and we'll come back, but it was not up to par last Sunday night.
Food quality and service have declined since last year.
I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant anymore
AMAZING! The food, the ambiance and the service were perfect... I highly recommend the mushroom pasta and the lobster Mac n cheese...
I enjoyed my food quite a bit, and had the goat cheese salad, scallops special, and gnocchi. The service was a bit slow, and it was several minutes before I was greeted. The food took some time to come out but was fantastic. Reservations are a must.
