The Local Ratings and Reviews
We were seated in a detached building which apparently was formerly a beauty shop although no trace of its previous life was evident. Wine racks lined the walls and there was room for about 6 tables. The music playing was at the perfect volume for quiet conversation. Despite being separate, service was excellent. We started with the cheese plate. My wife had the pork chop and I had the gnocchi. Everything was excellent.
The only drawback is parking. The Belmont restaurant scene definitely needs to address this. Even so, we will go again.
Truly negative experience. Ordered the duck and it was raw. One waitress blamed the lighting that made it “look more red.” Another admitted it needed to be cooked more but did not offer to do anything to better the situation. I do not intend to go back and I will recommend my friends and family do not go either.
I simply cannot believe the waitress blamed the lighting instead of being understanding. I left a feedback form with the restaurant but have yet to hear back.
My significant other and I had a wonderful Valentine's dinner here! Good came very quickly, our server was attentive and personable, and the food was wonderful! We got drinks, a pork belly appetizer, beef tenderloin dinner, and flourless cake for dessert. One of the best meals I've had in Charlottesville, and we'll definitely be back.
My wife and I had great meals. I will speak to mine. It was a polenta appetizer that was out of this world. I have eaten polenta many times in the traditional way. This had a Southern twist to it with crawfish, Chorizo, and a poached egg. Fabulous. I then had a small plate of pasta with mushrooms and truffles. The best pasta and truffle dish this side of the Atlantic. Well worth dining there.
We had a fabulous dinner. There were three of us and we shared the crispy shrimp appetizer. It was delicious. I had the duck, Chinese style, and it was amazing. My son had trout and my husband beef. We all enjoyed our meals. Our waiter was fantastic- very knowledgable about the dishes. The ambiance was great- only minor complaint was a relatively high noise level. We will definitely go back the next time we are in Charlottesville.
The Local is easily one of the best restaurants in Charlottesville. The food and service are always top-notch. I usually get steak frites, which are 10/10, but I went with the Timber Creek chicken last time and it has overtaken steak frites for my favorite meal in town. The only problem we had was that this was the first time we have been seated upstairs and the ambience is very different from the quiet, low-key downstairs vibe. It was much louder than we had hoped and it was difficult to hear each other speak, but it was still a great meal and the service was fantastic.
We went to The Local for a nice dinner date. The low-light ambience was romantic and the service was nice enough. The mashed potatoes, ribs, and calamari in particular were cooked and seasoned very well. However, the flank steak was tough and served lukewarm, the fries were obviously deep-fried in old oil, and my date's vegetables weren't cooked through to the point where he needed my steak knife to just cut his carrots. At over $60 for two people, it just wasn't quite the experience I was hoping for.
i gave the food only 3 stars because my meatloaf was tough and dry,I should have ask the waiter exchange it for one made that day,but I didn't want to ruin an otherwise great family meal.your meatloaf is always so moist and a lot better than mine ,it was just a small disappointment that won't deter me from coming.your restaurNt is the only place we dine at when eating out. This was our first time at the Local. We had a wonderful time and very delicious food! We started with the cheese tray paired with a Cabernet and also the Brussel sprouts and cauliflower (highly recommend, quite heavy). We also had the lobster macaroni and the mushroom truffle pasta. The mushroom pasta was incredible... We then had the salmon and squash for our main meal. Salmon was fresh, squash a little dry but very healthy tasting. Highly recommend the salmon. Will be back again!
I was a bit disappointed, the calamari appetizer was great, the entrees were heavy and a bit dull. The food arrived within minutes of ordering so the dining experience is quick and I think this is why my experience was underwhelming. We arrived at 6:30 and home by 7:40 just didn't add up to great quality.
My husband and I had been wanting to try the Local for some time, but we never think to venture over to the Belmont area. We decided to finally try it and we were very happy we did, the restaurant itself was cozy, our waiter was great, very helpful and the food was absolutely delicious! Oh and they had some nice cocktails as well!! We are looking forward to our next visit!
Such great food and great service. It was my birthday and brought 13 friends with me. Given our large size, we experienced none of the issues I’ve had at other restaurants with a large party. Everyone got their food at the same time and it was all correct. They were very attentive with drink orders. They even brought me a brownie with a candle at the end. Overall, wonderful place to bring a big group of friends.
The food was pretty decent but service was slow and my husbands steak was served extremely rare (not medium as he ordered it). By the time the server came back to check on us, the rest of the table had already finished eating their meal so there was nothing that could be done to correct it at that point. We had ordered lots of apps and drinks and the server did not even offer to take off a single thing from our bill despite the fact that my husband was not able to eat the steak at all. Considering it was his birthday, I was pretty disappointed by the whole experience. The rest of the group described their meal as "mehh", meaning not terrible but not great either.
Our daughter recommended we try The Local, when we game up for a UVA basketball game. We were pleasantly surprised, when we walked into the restaurant. It gave us a warm inviting feeling, right away. We were led up stairs, where there was a cosy fire going in the wood stove. The menu had lots of option, local produce, a nice selection of wines. Everyone chose something different and we were all pleased with our meals. The presentation was lovely. We will definitely come back, next time we are in town. Thanks for a wonderful evening.
I really enjoyed my food at this restaurant, but it was incredibly crowded (and noisy) because of the holiday. There was definitely NOT enough staff to handle the crowd, but our waiter really tried very hard, and he was quite charming. It was not his fault that they didn't have enough waiters, nor that the food runners often got the tables wrong.
The food was good, and the bill wasn't too bad (especially for Charlottesville). I would probably go back, but definitely not on a holiday.
P.S. The chairs are terribly uncomfortable. We were in the extended part of the upstairs, so they might not have been the regular chairs used for less busy evenings.
