The Local Ratings and Reviews
I ordered the Lobster mac and cheese and was not disapointed. Great amount of lobster in a creamy cheddar macaroni. I paired it with a local chardanay. Perfect! The ale soup of the day had the perfect balance of spices.
Tried a hand crafted coctail: the Hinton. Highly recommended. This has become my new fav place for dinner!
Perhaps The Local has jumped the shark. Our server was apologizing to literally every table for something; over cooked steaks, forgotten wine, forgotten appetizer, and my vegetables which were completely raw. Still known as a hot spot in town, we sadly were disappointed and would not recommend. I believe the kitchen may not be prepared to keep up with the expanded restaurant size.
Dinner with son and daughter in law, both of whom are UVA grads. One of their favorite restaurants. Got there early on a Saturday evening. Was not crowded, although there was a steady stream of people coming in while we were dining. We had a very nice, quiet table in a nook by the window. The Local did not disappoint. Our waiter was outstanding, very helpful, and the food was very, very good. As always. Definitely a reasonable value for what they deliver.
My husband and I ate here on a trip through Charlottesville. This restaurant claims to be a farm to table establishment but I would argue with that. It was below par with farm to table restaurants we have visited. The menu listed an entree that was apparently their take on Nashville Hot Chicken with collard greens and pimento cheese mac and cheese. Sounded delicious since we have had the authentic dish so we both decided to order it. When the food arrived the crust appeared extremely dark brown and when we cut into the thigh/leg portions, red juice oozed out. When the waiter returned, we informed him the chicken was partially raw. He collected them and returned to the chicken. I honestly believe they took the same chicken, rebreaded and refried it! My husband said some of the meat was missing from his portion. When it was returned, the crust was solid black and the meat overcooked to the point that it was like cutting a piece of wood! I pushed it aside and ate some of the mac and cheese and collards which were mostly just spicy but not overly flavorful. The waiter asked if we wanted a box and I informed him it was inedible as I'm sure he already knew. They did reduce the price however. I don't think I could visit this restaurant again with all the other good dining choices in Charlottesville.
Disappointed. Made reservations a month in advance but was seated next to the upstairs party room that was occupied. It felt as if we were sitting in the kitchen... Cluttered, disorganized, piles of tableware sitting around. Food was so-so. Was not the experience we expected based on prior visits.
The Local is one of our "go to" restaurants in C'ville -- we really love it. The food and the service are typically consistent (very good to excellent), although we had an exception during this dining experience in that the crab soup -- which we have enjoyed for several years -- was INCREDIBLY SPICY and almost inedible (and it was only barely warm). We asked the server if the recipe had recently changed, or if there was a new sous chef, and he replied that the soup can vary from day to day ("it just depends"). We had never had it vary, previously, but whatever. We'll think twice about ordering it in the future. Otherwise, all was very good.
Overall, a great experience. Our drinks, appetizer and enteees were delicious. The dessert menu could be a little better. The choices were limited and the blackberry cobbler left much to be desired. Also, the bartender seemed extremely frazzled and annoyed that we ordered cocktails and then when we asked for our check he was a little snappy in telling us that we had to wait.
Came here for my birthday with a group of friends. Very good service but I was not impressed with the food. I had trout and I thought it was way too salty, while the rest of the dish was bland. For $20-30 per entree, I did not think it was worth it. Was excited to try this place but it didn't meet my expectations.
We went to the Local on Saturday night for dinner. We were really looking forward to it as the Local has been a favorite restaurant of ours since we were undergrads at UVA. We have always enjoyed our experience there, however, this night was different. The food was still great, but the service was awful! We arrived before 8pm for our 8pm reservation and waited outside in a line of maybe 15 people to get to the hostess stand. We were seated around 8:30. We didn't have any menus until 8:45. It took 3 separate trips to our table for the waitress to get everyone's drink order. She just skipped a couple of us the first time around. The food took awhile which would be okay if all the other aspects of service were great. Our waitress didn't check in on us much at all. It took probably 15 minutes to get the drinks once the orders were finally placed. Then, one of the entrees was not ready with the others and the waitress had to ask the member of our party what he had ordered because she couldn't remember. Overall, terrible service experience. But, we love the food and the ambiance so we will likely give it one more chance in the future. We were just shocked to have such a bad experience!! It's not like the Local isn't very busy every weekend...
LOVED this place! Wish I lived in Charlottesville so I could go there regularly. Ate here when in town for a weekend based on a friend's recommendation and was totally wow'd with the whole meal. Margarita was one of the best I've had. Loved the fried cauliflower and Brussels sprouts appetizer (even my husband who normally won't touch a Brussels sprout loved it!), chicken and mac&cheese entre, and blackberry cobbler. Husband loved his tuna special and homemade ice cream dessert. Only downside was the noise level.
We were visiting Charlottesville for the weekend and I had found this place on the internet. It looked good so we decided to give it a try. We came before the rush so there wasn't much noise at that time. The food was really delicious! We had a server name Joanna who was very attentive and sweet. My husband and I were both very impressed with the food and the value for the money. Would definitely come here again if traveling in the area. Have already recommended it to friends.
Had dinner with our daughter and 3 of her law school friends. 4 persons in the group were vegetarians and they found great offerings as appetizers and entrees. Dinner was delightful but it is a little loud for conversations across the table. We absolutely will go again.
We went here for our anniversary. It's difficult to find a moderately-priced place that has more than one vegetarian option (we're both vegetarian), but The Local had three! Everything was delicious and beautifully presented, including the dessert (blackberry cobbler a la mode). The only disappointment was that we had asked to sit outside when we made our reservation and were informed when we arrived that we had been moved from the balcony, which has a lovely view, to a tent outside. Sitting there was fine, but I had been looking forward to something a little more special for our occasion. Still, we had a wonderful time and are planning a return visit!
