The Lobby Ratings and Reviews
I was disappointed because we were doing Holiday Tea with 4 friends. The day of my reservation they informed me the tea would be $75, not $65. I thought $65 was plenty pricey and I resented that they jacked up the price because it was December 2nd. I am sure they think, "well if you can afford $65, why not $75" but that's not really the point. As if they couldn't make a very good profit charging $65 for tea. In addition, the food was not as good as where we went last year, and they did charge more because is was the Holiday. The tree in the middle of the lobby was lovely, but it was noisy. The wait staff were very nice and professional - efficient.
Of course when show up for afternoon tea, the price has been jacked up from the already absurd $65/person to $75/person. The desserts were pretty tacky and pedestrian with what appeared to be grocery store level decoration and presentation. The sandwiches and tea, however, were delicious.
I have been going to the Lobby for afternoon tea for several years now and I was impressed the very first time I went. Subsequent visits have proved no less impressive. I decided this would be the place to go for tradition Christmas afternoon tea because the decorations; the A-1 service; the teas which taste like tasting tea for the first time are all wonderful. The Peninsula's afternoon teas are the standard against which I judge all teas. Even the Plaza Hotel in New York didn't quite match the ambience, service and teas of the Lobby. Until I find some place better, I will continue to go to the Lobby.
We arrived shortly after brunch opened and stations were not replenished often. Carving station food was over cooked and looked dried. Server was excellent and attentive. Music was lovely. There was a station with just dried fruit and nuts! For $75 pp
It was sad. Mimosas $20 each???
I'll try the Ritz Carlton next.👎
I really wanted to enjoy my experience at The Lobby. I had been waiting to go here for quite some time. My experience was so disappointing. The portions were incredibly small for the price and simply didn't taste good. I had the French toast. 4 tiny cubes of bread arrived on the plate. The bread was dry inside and out. For $20, I expect something palatable and I should not be hungry after eating my entree. The only good thing I had was the coffee. What they lacked in culinary skills they did not make up for in service. Our waitress disappeared for so long we actually started to wonder if our table had been forgotten. One guest at our table ordered the waffles and they came out without the cream. Not a huge deal except it took 2 people to correct the oversight. She was practically done by the time it arrived. I was actually embarrassed that I suggested that my family dine here and I don't expect to be back.
Afternoon Tea at the Lobby was a lovely experience. The food was delicious and nicely portioned. Savories were the perfect size and balanced out the sweets rather than being too heavy in the sweets. The Peninsula Chai is a delicious tea choice. Musicians played for a portion of our time and that was wonderful, though I was glad to not be sitting to close to them as conversation may have been difficult. I’ve been several times to this tea and look forward to when I can return.
Visiting Chicago in many ways is always a new adventure. For my daighters’ 15th Birthday we decided to reserve a table for afternoon tea. We commend the hostess that evening and especially the fabulous server Ubaldo. Ubaldo allowed for an amazing experience. I can not sufficiently describe the tasty scones, sandwiches: lobster shrimp, cucumber, smoked salmon, chicken salad and roasted butternut squash. Our desserts were also fabulous. As was the tea. Our compliments to the chef for the beautiful and equally delicious dessert that was sent out to my daughter.
This used to be a great restaurant that was worthy of its (now lost) Michelin star and the otherwise-wonderful hotel. However, it has gone really downhill. Food was just okay for the price -- easily over $100 per person. Service took forever. One member of our party didn't get their entree till everyone else had had their food for probably 20-25 minutes. No more white tablecloths. It used to be a special restaurant, but you'd now be a fool to go here with all the other good options in River North.
The Lobby is an amazing place! The food, service, ambiance and people are excellent. I went for a birthday celebration and it could not have been better! I recommend going and I recommend indulging in the Chocolate at the Pen, which is incredible! I'm looking forward to my next visit!
