Food was good, service was a little slow though and didn’t feel as friendly. Still an amazing place to be with some great views.
I do like the upstairs restaurant but its juts so noisy! I wish venues like these (all hard surface) would think about noise impact and invest in something that absorbs the background noise - walking up the stairs to the restaurant sounds like you’re entering into some kind of school canteen/refectory.
Having said that the service and the food and drinks are good, and it’s a good location.
The food was absolutely delicious. The service not quite as great. When we arrived we were told (what we felt quite rudely) that we could only have the table for 1h30. We ended up staying at the table for an extra hour on top of that but as we asked several times if they needed the table back yet, we were repeatedly told we could stay for an extra 20 mins. As a result what could have been a nice relaxing dinner ended up feeling rushed and pressurised and we felt somewhat unwelcome in the otherwise lovely restaurant!
Set in the new Kings Cross development the Lighterman has good views of the Regents Canal. The set lunch menu is good value. Service was a little slow especially when waiting to pay. Food was good - Chicken and pearl barley was tasty, the calamari average.
The service was a bit pushy. They asked us three times if we wanted drinks, by different people, and each time we said we wanted to choose our food before ordering wine.
Then once we had chosen, they the told us what they had left on the menu. So we had to quickly change on the spot, whilst they watched over us.
The food was ok to good, although the mushroom tart main course was small for a main course. It looked like a starter for the price of a main.
The setting next to the canal was nice however and the decor quite good too.
This is a nice restaurant on three floors, with the ground floor with views out into the square and overlooking the canal; basement leading out onto the canal, and the top floor with views over the whole area. The top floor is very very noisy when filled with diners, so not the best place to sit if you want to have a descent conversation. When we visited we let them know in advance that we had a wheelchair user with us, so odd that they placed us right by a door which people needed to access, and there was no where else to place us, so not very wheelchair user friendly.
Sunday lunch menu is really nice though, with quite big portions. Service can be a bit laid back, in that they don't clear the table of used plates unless you ask them too, which didn't leave a lot of room for other meals as they arrived, making eating on a table for 6 awkward.
Overall a good restaurant though, with lovely views over the canal and square. My tip would be to ask to be seated on the ground floor or the basement for a better experience.
lovely spot with great views and food is wonderful
Very overpriced for what was really a glamours Weatherspoon menu. Service was not great either very slow despite it not being very busy. What looks like a great restaurant left me very disappointed.
Great service. Not too much for vegetarians but all in all a great experience
The venue is beautiful, the service very attentive and, cherry on the cake, they brought a birthday cake to my friend with a candle and all: you made our evening! Thanks!
We were a group of 8 booked in for 1pm on a Saturday, and needing a place to enjoy a long lunch and conversation. We were seated at a great table with a view over the canal, which was lovely and airy. The service was just about ok but we often had to look for a waiter to ask for drinks etc. The benefit was that we got to sit with little interruption for about 3 hours, which suited us well but would be a problem if you were looking for something speedy. Everyone enjoyed the food they ordered, which was good quality. Just be aware that if you order a flatbread it "comes when ready" which may be 15 minutes before a normal main meal arrives. We would definitely go back, but you need to be on it with the waiting staff to request drinks etc.
Nice food - we had the waiters recommendation of the steak on bone to share - and good wine selection. The downstairs bar was very noisey and packed on a friday evening but the restaurant was relatively relaxed and we could here each other speak
Thank you for your review elviz. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed our Chef's Cut, and you were able to pair it with one of our delicious wines. Hope to see you back again! Best, Emma
We were well looked after as a party of 10. Not rushed and dealt with in a timely manner. Well done
Thank you IanT! I will pass your feedback to our team who will be pleased you enjoyed your experience. Best, Emma
Had a lovely family gathering, unexpected person turned up but no trouble they just laid an extra space. Lovely food great service.
Great service , super friendly and so welcoming especially being New Year’s Day. My friend never been here before and he loved it! Expect another visit soon.....
Dear Noodles, I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to The Lighterman. Hope to see you back soon! Best, Emma
Absolutely brilliant staff, couldn't do enough for us. All staff were super attentive, caring and friendly. Great ambience inside and lovely layout.
Dear KeithC, Very pleased to hear you enjoyed your time at The Lighterman. I will pass on your feedback to the team, who I know will be very happy to hear! Best, Emma
Nous avons très bien mangé dans ce restaurant pour notre repas du jour de l'an. La nourriture était très bonne. Nous reviendrons lors d'un prochain séjour à Londres !
Food was great however it was a fixed NYE menu with limited options. Service however was poor. They served a wrong more expensive wine and made us pay for it. They acknowledged the mistake but without offering solutions other than putting the blame on the customer’s responsibility. Highly unprofessional attitude, from the waiter, supervisor and the supervisor’s manager. Too bad when compared to the excellent kitchen.
Really good food overlooking the canal although took a while to arrive and then felt the pressure to leave quite quickly afterwards by the waiter. It became a bit of a crèche from around midday..
A great venue at the heart of new Kings X. Nice space, friendly service and decent food at a manageable price. Will go again.
It would have been a great evening but the service was so slow and they forgot things we ordered so that was a bit of a bummer. Food was tasty and location is really fab
The upstairs restaurant has a great view and perfect dining environment
Our waitress was very professional and friendly. Well done!
Good value for money
The service was lost, having to ask for things several times. Despite all three being highly recommended by the server, the chicken and turkey were both very dry; had to get extra gravy to eat it. The fish and chips was oily. We were pretty shocked they have such high reviews because our whole meal was blah and very disappointing.
Definitely a very good alternative to Hawksmoor - less busy, great decor and really attentive service. Sticky toffee pudding is incredible!
Lovely staff, great service & delish food as usual.
Very accommodating staff at what must be a very busy time of year for them. Good food. If there was a wrinkle it was that the wine list wasnt great. It didnt stop us having a good time though. Will definitely go back.
Very disappointing that a lot of our meals turned up cold.
Arrived with an extra person to our booking which was fine and we were moved to a bigger table by the lady on the welcome desk. Drinks served promptly and food order shortly afterwards.
Food arrived in good time, 3x roast beef and 1xroast chicken. The issue with the food was it wasn’t hot enough. A roast dinner should be piping hot, plates were barely warm which didn’t help. Food was tasty but just let down by the temperature. Visited before and never had this issue so hopefully just a 1 off.
Excellent food. Attentive but service. Will definitely be back
Great venue for lunch for a party of 14! Good service and delicious food, stayed for drinks after.
Excellent food and service, will definitely be going again soon
We booked for a birthday party/Christmas catch up and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We originally only had a two hour slot, but the team were fantastic at extending this for us. The upstairs dining tables are perfect for large groups and the food was very good. There was a wide selection of food including a very hearty sharing platter - all reasonably priced for the area.
The staff were attentive, especially at this time of year and were very accommodating. Would thoroughly recommend.
Thank you Andy! I'm delighted to hear you were looked after so well, and you enjoyed your meals. I will pass the feedback to our team! Best, Emma
Sorry, very overpriced for average food.
I sent my burger back as it was hard.
38.00 for a bottle of Prosecco, ridiculous.
Staff were friendly and good, venue location is good, overall extremely disappointed.
Best service in the area
The food is good but the service was poor. Despite asking for the oil & balsamic vinegar three times, we still didnt receive it. The main course was very good, not excellent as they had run out of rib eye steaks so had to make do with the sirloin. I have been there before when the service was better. Also, I booked for 8:30 but asked if it was possible to get in earlier, we were told no yet, two girls came straight in off the street and got a table. Some of the staff need traing in manners and how to serve efficiently.

Lovely table over-looking granary square, been here a few times and nice to see the flatbreads are still there as they’re so tasty ! But also a new menu for mains which keeps it interesting - we’ll be back :)
Dear VanessaB, Thank you for your kind review! Best, Emma
Great Sunday roast in a beautiful space. Great staff. Can’t believe I’ve not eaten there before
Not impressed. Was ignored by the host staff on arrival and then taken to the bar as our table was not ready. After a 25 min wait and asking numerous times we were told our table was ready but not taken to nor shown to the table and had to ask another member of staff. Food was average and mediocre and definitely not work the pumped up costs due to location. No special dietary requirements menu. Overall a very underwhelming service and food experience.

Excellent service, food was good, we had squid which was lovely and a tasty cauli soup to start, followed by roast dinners with nice veg and plenty of gravy. I'd say the food is good gastro pub standard but wouldn't describe it as a foodie paradise.
Thank you for leaving us a review! Best, Emma
Great restaurant to meet near kings cross, great atmosphere and not rushed out, food is good, a great overall experience for groups and gatherings
Dear ElaineG, Thank you for your great review! Emma
