The Lifesaving Station - Sanderling Resort

Located in the original Caffey’s Inlet Life Saving Station No. 5, the Lifesaving Station is Sanderling’s casual, three-meal-a-day restaurant celebrating southern coastal cuisine. After the winter renovations, the second level now offers sweeping views of the Currituck Sound and available for large parties with an expansive kid’s menu.

The menu changes seasonally, and specials feature the freshest of the day’s catch. This season’s highlights are Shrimp and Grits, Crab Stuffed Flounder or Pan Seared Duck Breast. Since the restaurant's inception in 1985, the Sanderling Blue Crab Chowder has been a favorite.

The Lifesaving Station maintains an impressive wine list. At the newly renovated No 5 Bar now located on the first level, local North Carolina breweries are featured on tap while specialty cocktails include “Keeper’s Watch” . A new No 5 bar food menu is available all day.

My niece and I had a very nice meal. I had the tuna and she had the scallops - yummy! Our servers was polite and friendly. We shared the sea salt caramel cheesecake for dessert - so sweet!! Restaurant was filled with several families and it was a nice casual atmosphere to have dinner. We'll see you again soon!

Other reviews criticize the service but fail to temper their criticism in light of the staffing issues the whole service industry faces especially on the OBX.Our servers were inexpert but friendly and trying their best. The food and cocktail quality was good to very good with a few dinner entrees ( steaks) significantly overpriced. Breakfasts were excellent.

The food is excellent, if expensive. The reason for the one star for service was not because of the waitstaff, who did a great job. The one star is for the manager who was extremely rude and unprofessional. Among other things, she talked about us to the waitstaff, who then stared at us for the entire meal, making us very uncomfortable. We've been going to this restaurant for over 20 years, but the experience was pretty unsettling; sadly, we may not return.

We were pleased to get a reservation and happier they could seat us early. The food is pricy no doubt about it. But it was delicious. We tried the blue crab corn chowder and loved it. The shrimp carbonara was excellent. The lamb chops were outstanding. Service was slow ! But it’s slow everywhere The restaurant was hot Overall a good place to eat

Worst restaurant experience all 6 of us had ever had. We never got our bread, we got refills on water one time, food was good but overpriced, burger came out with tomato when it was asked for without it, forced to tip in front of the waiter and was given cash straight out of his wallet to break our bills which was strange, when we asked for a box he said “I’ve been here 7 times” when in reality he had come 5 times total. Also had to wait quite awhile towards the end for our check. The server was what made the experience so poor. Have been here 5 other times or so before and never had this issue until now. Will not be back.

This is the second time we’ve had dinner at The Lifesaving Station. It’s just delicious. Really cute place in a great area. I recommend you try it if you’re going to visit the OBX. I do not understand why it is not busier unless it is on the weekends (we were there on a Tuesday evening). It just needs better marketing.

Two of us ordered the $30 fried chicken entree. Both had carrots so hard (uncooked) they were difficult to cut. Mashed potato was lukewarm in center, cool at edges. We dined at 6:30 and the place was barely half full so “busy” was not an excuse. Not even worth $15.

Waited almost 15 minutes before asking a server if we could be waited on. When waitress arrived, she said what can I get for you. I thought I was at Dairy Queen. They were out of the special at 7:30. The shrimp cocktail looked like it came from a frozen tray at the grocery store. The Makers Mark on the rocks came in a glass filled to the brim with crushed ice and water. We had lunch at this restaurant and the food and service was excellent.

Waiter didn’t bring their fresh baked bread out until we asked…after seeing all the other tables with a basket…at the end of the meal. He also told us there was no chef special that day, then the waiter at the table next to us offered that table the chef special, halibut. Slow to come to our table throughout the meal, I had to go ask for him to be sent out twice. Just very odd and disappointing for what otherwise seemed to be a nice place.

Great Mother’s Day dinner at the Lifesaving Station - incredible 4 course meal for $75 - all was delicious (the dessert was ok) The filet was cooked to perfection and we agreed that the tomato bisque was the best we’d ever had. Nice atmosphere at the Sanderling too. Pretty restaurant, great service and delicious food!

I expected a more casual setting - but the decor is shore based yet refined. The cocktails were fabulous - the best of our week on the Outer Banks. Everyone in our group was impressed with the food - in each case the protein was cooked perfectly with a variety of sides - all of which were delicious. I now have a new favorite restaurant on the Outer Banks

The Good: Food was very good and served in a timely manner. I had the special, which was fajitas. The plate was plentiful. The chicken was excellent and I was able to make 3 fajitas. The shrimp wrapped in bacon was ok. Not a big fan of bacon unless it’s crispy. Didn’t even get to try the beef, I was so full already. Dining companions had the fried chicken and really enjoyed it. I sampled it and it was excellent. Carrots were undercooked. Mashed potatoes were good. Crème brûlée cheesecake had a nice texture to it. Our waitress, Liz, was great. Very attentive and was enthusiastic in her recommendations. Gave me a good red wine recommendation as well. The Bad: The potential ambiance of this place is wasted because they play loud 70s and 80s rock through speakers that are crackly. Fortunately, Liz was great at turning the volume down when we asked. However, when you’re shelling out $30-65 for an entree and paying $15 for a glass of wine or a cocktail, you don’t want to listen to Rollercoaster of Love. Conclusion: Probably won’t be going back. Plenty of better options in the area.

We enjoyed our meal. The suggestion I have though is to have the wait staff slow down in serving courses. We were still eating our first course when they brought the entree. The restaurant is lovely and our wait staff was most attentive they just need to give diners more time between courses.

Service was a problem and made me grumpy. My main arrived before the salad. Had to ask for bread, wine arrived late. Server asked for our order as soon as we sat down. I felt like I was in a fast food restaurant. I think it was his first night ever. The mixed green salad was fresh and delicious, and my husband's fried chicken and mashed potatos were good, however... The seared tuna sounded great but it was so oversalted I could hardly eat it. The asparagus was good, for the price, this entree was disgraceful. Food should not be so salty you can't taste anything else. The risotto was "meh". I was quite disappointed all in all. Breakfast is good, I would not recommend dinner.

We went with another couples to celebrate our anniversaries. We originally selected the Lifesaving Station because of an advertised special on their website. When we arrived they no longer offered the special, nor did they offer a substitute. We ordered off of their limited main menu. My friend and I ordered the scallops at $42. When the plates arrived there were four scallops on a bed of wild rice and a couple pieces of cold broccolini. We also ordered a bottle of wine for $55. We later checked and found we could buy the same bottle from Total Wine for under $20. My wife had a half of a fried chicken breast for $30. She said it was very good, but $30 for a half of a breast is very pricy. We understand that restaurants are there to make a profit, But they are also expected to provide reasonably priced meal choices.
