My fist experience at the Liberty as excellent. Lunch as tasty and well prepared. It is refreshing to eat at a restaurant where you can actually hear the people in your group.

The Library is usually our favorite place to go. This last visit was not so great. Service was very slow and two of our dinners( both the salmon) were very over done. We were a group of five and my husband and I️ were embarrassed in front of our guests.

Great steak! Fish was dry but lobster was good. Not a brussle sprout fan - would of prefered just carrots as an option.

The Library is an excellent restaurant for dates and older families. It has a rich history and has a gorgeous bar and dining room. The food was incredible, I was so glad they were a part of Portsmouth restaurant week.

My only complaint is that I went there for restaurant week for their lunch menu on Sunday. They were not offering it on Sundays, only their brunch menu. They should advertise that. So I ended up having their frittata, which was ok. The menu said it included toast but it did not come with it.

The meal was fabulous! It’s not often that you can get fabulous steak tips for breakfast done to perfection and I added the peppercorn bourbon sauce. Three of us shared One slice of seven layer chocolate cake and it was amazing and huge! This is my first time there for brunch I highly recommend it, great menu options.

This restaurant is set in a beautiful old mansion. It is lovely however they have stuffed so many tables so close together it was so uncomfortable sitting for dinner . It is a lively environment and we had a nice time being able to laugh and catch up. The food is just mediocre and very expensive . I guess it was nice to go one time but we will not return .

Service was a little slow, but it was busy and also Restaurant Week in Portsmouth. Not our server's fault, likely a backup in the kitchen.

The Rib eye was atrocious. Not sure how the cut of meat can be that bad. Could not even cut the steak properly. Thought was the knife at first so asked for a second knife. Alas it was not the knife’s fault. The server was not even surprised or questioned why the entire meat was not eaten. Another colleague had the Lobster Pie. According to him it was not even salted properly. It was very very bland in taste. Overall the food not with a fraction of the high cost.

Steaks were excellent. The sides were lacking seasoning. The plating was poor. Our server seemed to disappear. Empty drink glasses were collected and we were not asked if we wanted refills. The nicest part of dining here was the ambiance and history of this building.

Our waitress was inexperienced, perhaps poorly trained. She spilled my husband’s martini when placing it on the table. She did not apologize or offer to put a clean napkin underneath the glass. We had Caesar salads, which were pretty tasteless. We didn’t want to pay an additional $2 each for anchovies. Really? A supposed upscale restaurant and they charge for anchovies? My pork sirloin, a special of the evening, was over cooked and dry. It was difficult to cut. I wasn’t asked how I’d like it cooked, so again, I thought an upscale restaurant would cook it correctly or at the least ask. My husband’s baked stuffed haddock with lobster was dry and tasteless. Extremely disappointed and will not return! I noticed that many of the customer feedback comments in 2016 were favorable and wonder what happened in 2017. Does management read comments??

Took the wife for our 23rd Anniversary. Everything was perfect. The food was cooked perfectly, our waitress was awesome and the person I dealt with on the phone for some special request was the best.

Such a beautiful restaurant! The steaks were amazing, but the sides we tried were disappointing. The lobster in the Mac and cheese was overwhelmed by the strong cheese taste. The augratin potatoes crust was so tough you had to cut it with a steak knife. Desserts were all fantastic. I loved the bourbon chocolate mousse

We were so excited to try the library but were overwhelmed with the fruit flies that were surrounding our table ! I cannot believe the board of health has not shut thus place down! While the manager moved us to a different table we were greeted by another infestation of fruit flies there as well! Not z good experience at all!!

This was our 30th wedding anniversary and we were excited about this restaurant. It was recommended by two separate friends and had the entree we had at our wedding. From the start, things seemed off. The waitress took our soup order but not the entree and left us. We ordered our entrees when she brought the soup - both filet mignon, cooked at medium rare. My husband also ordered his with the cognac peppercorn sauce. When the food arrived, there was no sauce on my husband's plate, just the filet. We cut into the steaks and both pieces were totally over cooked with not even a hint of pink. I ordered a glass of wine that never arrived. We ate the steaks, asked for our check and left.

The Library decor is charming and it was pleasantly quiet for Sunday brunch, but even with few other customers to attend to, the service was inattentive (coffees delayed, a long time before waiter took our order). The food was disappointing - bland eggs Benedict, soggy frozen strawberries on the waffles, dry frittatas, weak coffee.

Reservations worked great - sat us down within minutes. Problems=took 20 min before waitress acknowledged us - went to manager, she apologized and comped us our first round of drinks and an appetizer. Even after that, waitress was scarce didn't see much of her. Put order in, TOOK EXTREMELY LONG TIME for food to come out. Asked for more bread and some more water while waiting - didn't get either of them. We had 8pm reservations, place was full, and they did not have the AC on - it was VERY warm and stuffy, luckily we were seated by a window and one of the staff came over to open the window after we asked. I got the filet, wife got the swordfish. Both good cuts/size of food, and came out hot (temperature wise) which was good. Swordfish could've used some seasoning and the overall presentation of the food on the plates was lacking for the price paid. We didn't even want to see the dessert menu, we just wanted to leave. The service overall extremely lacking. I had read in previous reviews that the service had taken a hit since their last time being there, for us this was our first time, for an anniversary dinner, and we will not be going back.

Excellent steak & sides.
Salad was gritty -- like it had not been washed. Restaurant was warm & stuffy. We asked them to address & it worked for a few minutes but went back to stuffy. Will try it again. Nice ambience. A bit pricey.

We were staying at the Wentoworth by the sea and this was recommended to us. Our Server was fantastic, and all the servers (in the area we were seated) all worked well together to make sure all of the customers were well serviced. My husband had filet mignon and I had the swordfish; both cooked to perfection. We live on the coast of maine and try to get down to WWBTS 4 times a year. We will definitely return to The Library and recommend!

We have been to The Library on several occasions and it has always been excellent; a favorite of our son's having gone to school nearby. We came in from out of town (an 11 hour drive, and our daughter flew in) to have a special meal and weekend with our two kids. The salmon was dry and overcooked, my crabcake was absolutely bland, my husband's fish was pretty tasteless, and the rice was dry and crunchy. Our son's eye of round was very good. For the cost of the meal this was a big disappointment over past meals there. I would have to say with all of the options in Portsmouth we may go somewhere else when next in town.
