The Library Restaurant
Our server Jessica was just great. So attentive but not over your shoulder all the time. The food was delicious. The ambiance of the restaurant is just lovely and when they bring the bill, they put it into a library book. How unique!!!!! A lovely easy celebrating a birthday.
This is a must for us on every trip we make to the Portsmouth NH area. We come here 2 or 3 times per year, and we have never been disappointed. My wife always has seafood and I love the rack of lamb.
Elegant atmosphere, but you can dress casually. Food and service were perfect. Filet was very reasonably priced. My husband ordered 2 appetizers instead of an entree and it was plenty to eat. Loved the stained glass windows and carved wood ceiling. Also very happy with how quiet it was.
Not bad however also not great.
What a great find. Perfext fir a romantic dinner. Great ambiance and food.
Food was OK, I think we suffered from holiday kitchen staff. The steak fries were obviously cooked at way too high a temperature with the Steak Dip sandwich. The servers were very friendly & attentive.
Great food with kind and attentive staff.
Food was great, though rather pricey, and they forgot the birthday dessert I requested and they confirmed for my wife. Otherwise good experience.
Steaks were very good. Salmon and vegetable sides had zero seasoning. Vegetables were stunningly average and bland.
Are yearly visit for our anniversary
We were there to celebrate our 61st Anniversary. Our lunch at The Library was beyond all we had hoped it would be. We chose to be seated in the dining room which turned out to be very private, quiet, intimate, and thoroughly enjoyable. The food was absolutely outstanding and the timeliness of the service was impeccable. Thank you for making our celebration an experience that we will never forget.
Getting drinks a little slow, food was excellent (mussels for App. & filet cooked perfectly for dinner), time between appetizer/salad & main meal a little fast (we were not in a hurry), overall service was"ok". We would go back for another try.
C’est notre restaurant préféré lorsque nous sommes sur la côte est.
Outstanding service and incredibly good, perfectly cooked steaks...better than Ruth Chris
Delicious, but overpriced, oysters
Was quiet inside.. service was super slow and the food was fine but not great.
As usual great night started in the bar with dirty martini. Excellent. We both had filed mignon which was cooked perfectly. Terrific Anniversary dinner. We’ll be back.
This is one of my favorite restaurants because the food is consistently delicious and the staff wonderful. Lauren the manager always greets us and makes us feel welcome every time. It's like family dinner! The filet is so tender that if you take some home it is still tender the next day. The crab cake is the best I've ever had. Can't say enough positive things about the Library
My husband and I were celebrating 30 th wedding anniversary. SPECTACULAR wood on ceiling and wall. Looks like a library in a mansion. Best filet mignon I’ve had in years!
Excellent meal. Service was slow but friendly. Ladies' room was subpar for the type of restaurant. They happily accommodated a request for a birthday dessert (candle). Many wines by the glass -- red zone was nice.
A wonderful evening with delicious food, excellent wine in a charming atmosphere! A very pleasant and memorable evening !
I thought it was one of the best restaurants that I have gone to in a very long time.
This has been one of the WORST restaurant experiences I’ve had in resent years!
Although there were only 3 tables in the whole restaurant and bar, it took them ONE HOUR to bring a filet mignon with a side of steamed broccoli and a cesar salad with chicken.
When they finally did, no one even mentioned the delayed or apologized.
And to make matters worst the food was dull, poorly presented and expensive.
Although the dining room is nice, it’s not worth the visit!
Loved everything about it! Definitely would go back.
Food and drinks were not good.
Overall, a very positive experience. Good food, good menu choices and good service. Love the library decor. The atmosphere was perfect for an anniversary dinner. The fact that the crowd noise was not overbearing was a huge plus. So nice to be able to talk with a dining partner and not have to shout.
Yhis was our dinner for our 21st anniversary. Everything about this was stellar!!!!
I went for a Birthday celebration. The food was delicious and our server was fantastic.
Awesome food and friendly staff. The ambience is very nice.
It was OK, mussels were undercooked and cold, salmon over grilled and a bit dry. Everyone else had a good meal so 3 out of 4 dishes were fine.
The greeters and servers were excellent. The Brie appetizer was fantastic.
Other than that......
French onion soup was tasteless except for cheese. Weird, no taste.
Chowder had 100 times too much bacon.
Lobster salad was mush, and made the puff pastry taste like old rags.
Lobster stuffed haddock was a mouthful of bones.
Probably won’t be back. Sorry
Great bar & bartender. Unfortunately, our waitress was inattentive.
Food was good. Service was horrible. Our waitress was missing in action for most of our meal. She never came back to get us a second round of drinks until our food came to table. Otherwise you could not find her. I have been here before and have had excellent service in past. I will chalk it up as a bad night
Good food and great, friendly service. Thanks once again Library Staff.
Best steak and service in Portsmouth
This restaurant is not managed well. Tasteless food , inattentive service and overpriced especially wine by the glass.
This place is operated by a very young inexperienced staff; I would not return.
I would also question the knowledge level in the kitchen.
It's really too bad that this elegant restaurant with its unique ambience should have such lousy food. The bread was like Wonder Bread, the potsticker appetizer was so-so, the baked stuffed haddock was flavorless, the Brussels sprouts were hard as rocks, and the rice was dried out. The creamed spinach was uninspired, as were the mashed potatoes. The dessert was OK, but nothing special. My dining companion enjoyed the filet mignon, but it's hard to mess up USDA Prime beef. Moreover, the bill came to $150 for 2 people and only one of us had one alcoholic drink! The service was slow to boot. Whoever's running this place is coasting on an out-of-date reputation and the gullibility of out-of-towners. There are plenty of first-rate restaurants in Portsmouth; don't waste your money in this one.
We returned for a visit with a friend whose wife had recently passed away. Quite unbelievably , we were escorted to the same table we sat at, the last time all four of us dined at the Library. Service was very good, as were the meals we had. And we were able to finish in time to get to the show we planned to see at the Music Hall.
Four friends for a birthday celebration dinner. Excellent service and food. Rack of lamb was tender and well flavored. Lobster pie was very good, a nice mix of lobster and veggies. The puff pastry on the lobster pie was perfect
One of the best filets I have had in a long time,,,,,,will definitely go again when in the area.
