conveniently located at the Public Theater, but over priced and food overrated. If not for the location, I wouldn't go there.

We ate there on a Saturday night after attending the Blue Man Group show. They showed us to a table right at he entrance, but were accommodating when we asked to move. The alcohol selection was larger. The food menu not so much. But the food we got was very good. It was a little pricey though. Maybe the price was within NYC ranges.

This was my second visit and I brought a different friend this time around. The food is amazingly delicious, fresh, beautifully presented, and the portions are incredibly generous. I am introducing The Library to as many people as I can. It's my new favorite place. Bravo!

Great hidden gem at The Public Theater. I have eaten there mostly before the theater. But sometimes, like the two women at the table next to me this week, I just go to have dinner. Check it out whether you are going to see a performance at The Public or not. (But - take every chance you can get to see performances at The Public - The Library will nourish your body, The Public will nourish your mind and your soul.)

The Library is a beautiful setting for dinner. Service is attentive. The food is tasty. It’s easy to get to your theater at the Public from inside the building. And if you’re a member of the Public there is a 20% discount. The prices seem high so it’s not the best value for money. It’s a nice special occasion restaurant, with a limited but very tasty menu.

I dined at the Library TWICE this week -- before a show on Tuesday, and before another show on Saturday. Both nights, the service, food (order the fries, tacos and beets!), and ambiance were excellent. The wonderful hostess, Shannon, and our servers were mindful of our time and experience. We felt well-fed and well taken care of. On my second night here, I went up afterward with my friend for tea at the Library to discuss the show. We weren't dining, but they still gave us a terrific table and took good care of us. The noise level was low enough to enjoy a good conversation without shouting, and the lighting provided a very cozy atmosphere. We were up there for two hours drinking tea and chatting and didn't even know so much time had passed. This place is a hidden gem. Cannot wait to return!

Tasty and well served dinner before going to theater at The Public. Especially handy in bad weather, but don't forget to reserve because it often books up well in advance.

Anything having to do with The Public Theater is a treat - it's a wonderful place to be, and The Library is a lovely setting within the theater building. But it's pricey - the least expensive bottle of wine was a $70 Malbec. A modest appetizer of burrata was $18. Some of the dishes are almost too creative to be accessible...smoked cauliflower in a fava bean puree with sprinklings of other "autumn vegetables." It's like they're trying too hard. The burger ordered by one friend was well received as was a mushroom pasta dish. But for two appetizers, three entrees, and a bottle of wine the bill ended up over $200. Next time it's back to Joe's Pub.

I was not overwhelmed - the service was good, the food was acceptable, and the room was fine. I would only eat here if I were going to a performance in one of the theaters - otherwise I would not make the trek.

Salads are excellent & huge. Act II aka entrees are overpriced for quality & quantity except for burger. Fries were great until you hit the bottom when you realized that they have been sitting for long awhile. Service is tops! Drinks excellent . Ambiance is perfect for autumn/winter coziness.

Beautiful space in The Public Theatre space directly above Joes Pub. Incredibly attentive staff - my boyfriend has some food allergies and they were very accommodating. The food is outstanding and the drink menu is worth the journey thru to try a few - unique combinations of traditional cocktails

I ended up being a little dissapointed in this place, but I may have had too high of expectations. While I don't have many complaints, I also don't have many great things to say either. I just felt like at the end of it, I payed way too much for what I got. I believe the prices are high because members of The Public Theater get a discount which brings the price down to an acceptable price for what you're getting. It's a nice place, the food was very flavorful, but the pricing didn't match the tiny tables that are close together, the service not having that luxury feel and the over priced drinks. I would not go back for all of those reasons, but I am happy I went once.

You don't have to be attending the theatre to enjoy The Library's warmth, hospitality, and informal dining options, however, if you are, you've found the perfect place. Casual, comfortable, with a staff that's helpful and always eager to please, it's one of my favorite places to go. Located on the mezzanine level of the Public Theatre, you'll never be late for a curtain or stumped for a place to have a pre-show dinner or cocktail.

We have eaten at The Library several times and will do so again in the future.

The menu is small (5 appetizers, 4 salads, 8 entreés) yet well chosen with a good variety. We enjoyed the lobster rolls, shrimp tacos (a bit small), tagliatelle with pork ragù, hanger steak. All were nicely presented and very tasty. For dessert we shared the chocolate & vanilla soft serve and the gala apple crumble; the desserts were good but not outstanding. Overall a very enjoyable dinner.

The wine list is also small yet well chosen. We had an American Syrah that was quite good.

Service is great. Very friendly and knowledgeable.

Very good ambiance with one caveat. The atmosphere is, well, a library! Very nicely appointed and lit. The caveat: If you are a couple and there on a busy night most tables for two are in one line with very tight spacing. The restaurant ought to remove one of these tables to give more privacy. When we have been there on a less-busy night we were offered a more-private and more-spacious table for three.

Of course if you have tickets at the Public Theater the convenience of The Library (in the same building!) is unparalleled!

Members of the Public Theater get a discount! But remember to tip on the total before discount.

I recommend The Library.

If you're going to a performance at the Public Theatre, the Library is a no-brainer. It's right there. Good food at reasonable prices, with a nice variety. One thing that cost them a star: at $16 a glass for a mediocre Malbec or Pinot Noir is a bit over the top, considering that the pour itself is on the anemic. side. Sorry Library, you can do better.

The major draw for the Library is that it is in the same bldg as the Public Theaters. It opens at 5:30 so it's doable for a 7pm curtain. The menu doesn't change too much but the offerings are good, well prepared and fresh. Last night I had mini lobster rolls which were excellent.

Great ambience, good food, but the service was pretty bad. We were seated at opening (5:30), with a 7 PM curtain. Thought this would be plenty of time, but it is only because we scaled back on what we wanted that we felt comfortable about making it on time. The server, though very nice, disappeared for long stretches. This seemed strange since the place is not all that big. A first course salad never arrived. Instead a different salad came that we sent back for the correct one. The server did come by once during this period to leave a plate for sharing, but never checked to see if we had gotten the salad. When the entrees arrived, she asked whether we still wanted the salad. Of course, we said no. Another long wait after the entrees were done. Surprised that they did not have an espresso machine. A request for a dessert menu brought, after a while, the check. We were in fact relieved because we could now be on time for the play.
There was also a private party going on by the bar. It so clogged things that people were constantly scooting between our table and the others to get by. Lucky to avoid getting clocked by the woman with the backpack!
Will give another try in a few weeks when we have tickets for another play. It is super convenient and the food was fine, though overpriced. ($29 for a pasta dish)
By the way, make sure you use the rest room prior. It is on another floor!
A big plus is a 20% discount for Members of the Public Theater.

We had tickets for a 7:30pm show and thought dinner right in the theater would be the thing to do to assure our making our program without a rush.
I must admit the restaurant was full! our servers did their best to attend to us, but it seemed like we were waiting quite a bit for attention, our drinks once ordered, and then our food. It was a busy evening and kitchen.
One appetizer mussels) was decidedly 'off' and it took awhile to get our sever's attention; she happily replaced with with a different offering. Out of the four of us, I know one diner was quite please w his meal; the others simply 'okay'.
There are other restaurants nearby and we have been to one that was quite good, and most likely return there.

As always, lovely ambience, warm welcome, good service with attention to dietary issues , outstanding cocktail menu, food very good with the exception of the fish & chips which was substandard in every way. Same as last time we dined there. Because we are half century members of the Public Theater & because we value The Library we felt obligated to provide feedback on our exit - the response was "we're aware as we've heard it before". The puzzle is why the problem has not been rectified or the dish removed from the menu as one would expect. Shame on us for ordering it a second time.

First time. The Library is on left mezzanine level at The Public Theatrer. Opens at 5:30 for evening performances. Large attractive quiet room with a variety of seating arrangements. Expensive but 20% off for Public Members. Shared four excellent appetizers - mini lobster roles, calamari with good tartar sauce, special frites, cheese and fig bruschetta. Good mixed drink and wines by the glass. Could have returned for post performance dessert but thought the live music was too loud. Will return. Reservations helpful.
