About The Liberty
The Liberty is Charlotte’s first Gastro pub. Our goal is to provide great food and drink at a reasonable cost. The first Gastropubs started in London as many top chefs turned away from the high costs of fine dining, wanting to do their food in a more casual setting.
We also share this vision. Our menu offers elevated comfort foods and pub fare using the best ingredients available. We serve 19 hand crafted beers on tap (plus PBR!), and another 60 by the bottle. Our wine list is carefully chosen to give you 30 affordable wines by the glass. Naturally, we also have a full selection of spirits as well.
We don't have a dress code, or for that matter, an ounce of pretension. We are casual enough for jeans and a tee shirt, but nice enough for a first date.
We are a neighborhood establishment, sitting at the gateway to South End and Dilworth, with a light rail stop in our parking lot.
We are unlike anything else in Charlotte.
Welcome to The Liberty.

The Liberty Ratings and Reviews
Was surprised that the restaurant menu was entirely different from the online menu. Our visit last year while on business was delightful, and we were anticipating another delicious dinner. While the food we ordered was good, the offerings had changed from entrees to pub food...appetizers and mostly burgers and sandwiches. Only 4 entrees are offered and they appear on the menu more as a second thought (identified as larger plates) rather than featured entrees. Overall the meat (steak frites consisting of hanger steak and fries/we substituted salad) was tasty and well cooked. However the salad was overdressed with lemon vinaigrette and thus soggy. The craft beer selection was quite interesting. Service staff were personable and efficient. Overall a good meal after we adjusted our minds that their previous menu and especially the amazing pork chop we'd enjoyed in the past were non-existent now. Please Liberty Management...update your online menu!!
Sat right down, not very crowded maybe 40%- but then it Took a long time to get any attention for water or drinks then to be served drinks etc the whole dinner was slow and we told her we were trying to leave quink to go to the game- for 3 people with no appetizers this was too long - I will return but not if I have time limits
We were happy to be able to accommodate our party of 8, and we all loved the made from scratch taste and feel of the food. The Mac and cheese was made with real cheese, for example. With 5 kids in our party, the casual atmosphere was just right for our meal before a concert.
We took a friend who was visiting from CA, and we all had different burgers. The burgers were hot, fresh and cooked to order, but the fries were served lukewarm. The server cheerfully brought out fresh fries, but I don't think anything less than very fresh should be brought to the table. We also tried the new pretzel appetizer which was good, but not exceptional in any way. Great beer selection.
Food was tasted fine - but 3 of 7 orders came out wrong. Waitress never stopped by after taking our orders so drinks were empty and went unfilled until she brought the final check. Incorrect orders were never fixed because waitress never reappeared. Will not return.
My family and I had reservations for 5:45. We arrived 15 minutes early and were seated immediately. The decor of the restaurant was very well done and had a cool beer theme in the section we were in. The food was very good and the plate presentation was nice. The only issue we experienced was that the restaurant was understaffed (Labor Day) and that fact was reflected by the demeanor of our waitress. She was very curt and was not able to be as attentive as she could have been as she had too many tables due to the understaffing situation. When we commented how busy she was, she was very quick to vent her frustration. All in all it was a good dining experience and would try it again the next time we travel to Charlotte.
We really enjoyed our lunch here. Great personable server took care of us. Started with a delicious cocktail. Our food was very tasty although very different. Loved my Pub Burgwr as it dripped it's yummy juices. My side was a very nicely seasoned ( parsley and cheese) fries. My wife opted for the salmon with faro. She loved it. Parking can be a challenge but certainly worth the trip.
We had a great lunch at The Liberty on my husbands birthday. Our adult children enjoyed the interesting menu and drinks. Our waiter was super polite and not overly attentive but always there when we needed him. We had fun with some beer flights and the found the southern comfort food to be delicious. You should go there!
Just OK, no reason to go back, no reason not to go. Online menu has things that they no longer serve, (Pecan Pie), How hard is it to keep the web site accurate? Our server said she worked there for years, and they never had pecan pie during her time. They have Poutine!! Unfortunately they offer a dish you usually only see in Canada, and change the recipe so that it becomes French fry casserole, my opinion would be to call it something else, I would not order poutine unless I wanted poutine. So I would not call the issues I had earth shattering, just things that make me wonder "what were they thinking". Hamburgers where good, beer was good. Parking might be tough, we had no issue parking, but people were looking for spots when we left.
Pros- on time with reservation, great service, good drink menu, tasty cocktails & deserts.
Cons- small portions for price, apps & entrées were only average.
We went for restaurant week to try it out and left disappointed. The appetizers were lacking in flavor and found bones in the chicken tacos. My husband's meal was only about 3 oz of hanger steak atop a mountain of fries. My inital pick for an entrée consisted of only 4 shrimp which were luke warm at best. The second entrée they brought me (trout) however was flavorful and steaming hot. Deserts and drinks were both delicious! Overall, we probably wouldn't go back.
Service was good, but the food was disappointing. We had been there about 6 months ago and the food was excellent. Thus time the food was average. Salmon was undercooked when it was emphasized that it needed to be cooked through. The pork chop was tender in spots, but difficult to cut and tough in others. Salads were great and the shrimp dish was good. The caramel boudin was soupy and took a long time for dessert to be served.
Really a terrible meal from start to finish. I ordered a Guinness; it took ten minutes! to arrive--meanwhile my tomato salad arrived moments before. Then 25 minutes!! later, my pork chop finally got to my table. I'd ordered medium: it was well-done. No point in sending it back to wait another 25 minutes for its replacement. At no point did my server stop by to ask about my meal. Finally, I spoke w/a manager who said the kitchen was shorthanded (this was Sunday evening--when the restaurant was only moderately busy). That's no excuse for such dismissive service. I've enjoyed this restaurant in the past and had excellent service. I very much doubt Tom Condron has any idea how far his restaurant has slipped.
Our meal and service at The Liberty were very good. We had a late reservation at 9:15pm on a Wednesday, and our server was very attentive and did a wonderful job. The poutine appetizer was really good, and the butchers steak entree and the chicken and dumplings entree were both delicious! The gnocchi in the chicken and dumplings were so good!! The maverick grits entree was just okay - my husband found it to be a little overpowering, with too much happening on the plate. Green bean and macaroni and cheese sides were good, and the salted caramel budino dessert was a great end to the meal. Outdoor patio seating was really nice. We would definitely eat here again if we were in Charlotte!
Very good burgers, but service is, and has been during past visits, lacking. Had to wait (again) for quite some time before a server acknowledged our presence or came by to take a drink order. Then there was a recommendation to swap out the side item that came with the meal, but no mention of the additional $3.50 upcharge to swap out the item. This additional charge was not mentioned on the menu either that either one of us recalled. The unexpected charges added to the bill and put a damper on what was otherwise a good meal. Refill on beverage request came after the meal was finished, and we had to wait for the bill, not only to have it presented, but also to have the payment collected and processed. Not a good experience or value overall for a basic burger when the additional charges are added but not disclosed as an option up front. Repeatedly disappointed with our dining experience here, and will choose differently next time.
