The Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill Ratings and Reviews
Now, if the food, I don't necessarily mean the menu choices, were of a little bit higher quality and better thought out, I would take my friends there anytime. but, as it is, this is not the place to go when you are looking for a well executed cuisine. Change the chef and work on the menu concept more and you will have an Oakland treasure. The location is amazing.
My friend and I went to the Lake Chalet for dinner New years Eve. It was wonderful in every way. Great food, good service and what a view! We had been there before and enjoyed, but this time was even more special. This restaurant has all the components for a great eating experience. Will go again soon.
Loved the views and excellent service at our early (6:15) New Year's eve dinner. Scallops were delicious, too. Duck special, not so much---drowned in tasteless white gravy. As one of three New Year's Eve specials, it might have been a little more, well, special. Not disappointing enough to ruin the evening, especially as my sweetie shared his scallops.
My wife and I came here on 12/30/14 to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We live on the other side of the Lake, so it seemed like a good choice.
We ordered the Crab Cakes for starters, which were excellent. For the entree, I ordered the salmon, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My wife ordered the scallops, and felt disappointed with the price of this entree, i.e. 4 scallops on grits, and the scallops varied in taste and cooking level. For $28.00, these should be cooked to perfection, and there should be at least some greens on the plate. For our dessert, we had the bread pudding - this was divine!
We tried to pay with our $50 Visa gift card, and we're told by the server that he couldn't make it work for $50, but that he was able to make it work for $40. Our impression was that he did not know much about how to work with gift cards.
Overall, we enjoyed our experience at the Lake Chalet. But, oh, those scallops need some major improvement.
Bad service, or no service. Food arrived cold. The food is very average, nothing special. There were only two small cold fish tacos, but a lot of flounder in a soupy mess. After the cocktail we did not get another drink. We would have had to try and find a waiter and ask for every single thing. We got bread only after asking. The food is very average. For such a beautiful place, by the lake, all the lights, I was expecting something special. But it was all a big disappointment.
The BC Effingham oysters popped in my mouth, especially with a splash of light lemon sauce. I savored the flounder in a sherry sauce. Our fellow dinners so enjoyed the scallops, flat iron steak and seared salmon on a salad (specially done, as not on the menu).
For me, the dessert menu was a bit uninspired---and sadly so, since it was my B.D! I got the apple sorbet----very tasty, but i no way an over the top delight I imagined.
Though our server was spot on in all aspects, he slipped in one: He did not acknowledge my B.D, at dessert time. And yes, he was advised at our seating and during a wine pour. Perhaps a function of so many diners readying to leave together for the nearby performance of the Revels...
All in all, a very special and memorable feast.
I made the reservation because I had a friend with me who has mobility issues. I thought the lift near the dining room would be helpful, but neglected to consider that you have to walk down a flight of stairs to reach the front door and then walk a great distance to the dining area. Our table was in the farthest corner of the room. This was a disaster for my friend.
The servers were friendly but the menu and food were absolutely mediocre.
There were multiple large groups of extraordinarily loud people which made it impossible to hear one another. Unless you're an office party looking for a location, I would not recommend this place.
We had a delicious dinner with friends, the lake view is spectacular, and the service is friendly and competent.
However, the parking experience was very strange indeed. I'm disabled and use a walker. I was driving a friend who is also disabled. We arrived for our 5:15 reservation to find the mostly-empty parking lot chained off with an obviously untrue sign that the lot was full. I dropped my friend off, parked a few blocks a away and made my way to the restaurant with some difficulty. The lot was still mostly empty, including some handicapped spots. The restaurant itself was only half full. When I complained, I was told this was because of "special events" -- apparently more special than providing your disabled customers with a place to park?
As we dined and watched the parking lot from the plate-glass window, it became clear that the lot was filling up with some kind of valet parking arrangement, but at no time was such an option explained to us.
Our waitperson said that other people had complained, so I can only hope this was some kind of management error that will not last long.
The second visit (not on Thanksgiving) proved to be a much more enjoyable experience than the first. We were seated within minutes of arriving on time for our reservation. The service was prompt, courteous, and thoughtful. We asked if the salad was big enough to share and the waiter offered that they could split it onto 2 plates; he suggested his favorite salad, we got it and it was excellent. Our main courses were both tasty and interesting -- scallops cooked to perfection and pasta carbonara filled with subtle flavors. Wines by the glass were good.
I love the Lake Merritt area and have dined at Lake Chalet before. I love the atmosphere, the food and celebrating with family and close friends at this particular location. My favorite dish is the Flat Iron Steak! A must have with a glass of wine. I don't care for the fries, but a substitute of garlic mashed potatoes sets it off! The majority of the staff is friendly and the manager is excellent. He takes the time to greet guest and stop by your table to help out. Definitely recommended.
We were there for the traditional turkey dinner and the food and service were both fine. I think they may have been overwhelmed by the crowd and there was a problem with the lights. The view of Lake Merritt is very nice and it's a good place to show that Oakland is a good place to live. We enjoyed our meal.
Lake Chalet is a very memorable place for me. 2 years ago, my boyfriend then proposed to me on a gondola with his roses, a ring, and a man singing with a random guy playing saxophone. This year, we decided to spend our 2nd Year Anniversary at Lake Chalet restaurant. It was a very romantic dinner. The appetizer, meal and dessert was great!
We arrived at 3:30 PM on a Friday for a late lunch. * Definitely recommend the valet service for it is only six dollars and keep your's car safe. Started off with a few Pinot Noirs & the service was awesome. We had butternut squash soup, kale salad and the seafood fettuccine and all or decadent healthy and impeccable. The staff was attentive humorous and professional. We ended it off with a nice dessert wine that the server recommended and it was a nice cap to the meal. The host even volunteered to take our picture along the water. Great experience!
Windows on three walls provide a panoramic view of Oakland's Lake Merritt and her surrounding sights. It is very special to sit here at this revived historic restaurant. Had a great business luncheon. We split an entree, and a server brought it to us already split on two plates. The food came quickly. Our serving person was very attentive and friendly. Food was very tasty. I enjoyed the Caesar salad and the grilled salmon in a wonderful light sauce over shredded Brussels sprouts.
It was my second visit to try out, and it is a good atmosphere by the lake at night with shimering lights reflected on the water. The Condola roast beef was great and the wine was also good. Four of us dined and they haven't eat there and enjoyed a good food and the service. They only thing was special treat for a birthday was missing. it would have been a perfect choice of place to celebrate special occasions had they offered a little something to make a special day even better.
I have been here several times now, each time has been great. The food is excellent the service friendly and prompt. Its a nicer restaurant with a casual atmosphere. Perfect for a birthday dinner with friends to a romantic date. We had excellent service. The food was tasty as usual.
I ordered poached eggs and received hard boiled eggs. I asked the busboy to return the eggs to the kitchen. In a few moments, a woman, who was not our server, delivered three new eggs to me that were so under cooked that I couldn't eat them. Our server removed the dish from our bill but the point was we went there to have a nice brunch. My husband's eggs were poached perfectly so clearly they knew how to poach an egg.
Right on Lake Merritt, the ambiance in the evening is almost magical: mysterious crews practicing on the water and appearing and disappearing in the dark; a ring of lights rimming the lake with shimmering reflections. The service was excellent.
The food was OK.but not outstanding. The setting made up for it.
On a nice day, it is wonderful to sit on the deck. We had shrimp salads which were quite good, but it would have been nice, if we were offered bread. The waiter could have been more attentive.
My complaint, however it might be small, is when adding the price of parking to the bill, there is additional tax as well as expected tip. The parking attendant is also tipped. I don't think parking should be taxed nor added to the expected amount for tip.
