The Keg Steakhouse + Bar - Fort Street Ratings and Reviews
Anniversary dinner but this was not acknowledged by Keg staff (in the past we were offered a complimentary dessert). A quick wait for table upon arrival, seated at a table with a chilly breeze. Rated as a fair experience but not as good as in the past or similar steak restaurants. Pricey.
The Keg is our favourite place to celebrate a special occasion. The food is always great and the service is excellent. Our favourite thing to order is the prime rib, which is melt in your mouth fantastic! We’ve never been able to find it’s equal elsewhere. That being said, my husband recently tried a sirloin steak and said it was equally as good. A visit to The Keg is always a memorable experience!
Having had several years of marginal dining experiences in Victoria BC, and also with the more recent incarnations of Keg Restaurants everywhere, we were very pleasantly surprised to have been given a table in the quietest section of the restaurant - just what we needed.
The menu seems to have reverted to its roots, which is good - basic good quality beef, competently prepared, and presented gimmick-free. My one regret is the contined demise of the self-serve salad bar, one of George Tidball's greatest innovations!
One of our pet peeves about Victoria dining is that many places offer BC wines ONLY. One suspects for political reasons, because a few other parts of the world do actually turn out some quite respectable plonk at more reasonable prices. It was refreshing to have a more cosmopolitan choice of red wines, many of which were quite drinkable (including the one we selected!).
We were treated very well by both reception and table staff, and are most impressed with the apparently young, enthusiastic and competent management, which bodes well for the future.
Well done everyone, and we shall CERTAINLY be back to see you again next time we come to town.
We love the Keg and have gone there often. This time, we were disappointed in the food. Our food came out lukewarm. They tried to fix it, but again, food came out lukewarm. Our server was amazing through it all and did her best to make up for the kitchen's mistake. She got the manager Ian to come over and he was very kind and generous. He made everything right and made sure that we were happy before we left. I would highly recommend meeting Ian as he really cares about his customers. We will give them another try soon.
Excellent...thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We were coming from out of town and made our reservation for two on line about a week before. It all went smoothly, had requested a window seat and we were seated in a nice comfortable booth by the window. Great harbour view. Food and service were amazing! Can't wait to go back...
I made the reservation for guests coming from outside Victoria. One of the guests had a meal that was bloody rare and he had ordered medium rare. He sent it back. It was still overly rare when it was brought back to him, and the vegetables and potatoes were cold. My mother's steak was not as tender as she would have liked. The waiter asked the manager to stop by the table but he never came. A disappointing meal but a rare occurrence, so we will go again.
The Keg is always solid, but on this occasion it took 30 minutes to have our drink order taken. There was no attempt to try to make it right(an acknowledgement would have been enough). After the initial wait, the food was great and server was a nice enough guy.
Our experience was acceptable. We have been to the Keg in other cities and had a better experience. I ordered a glass of wine to enjoy with my meal and because of confusion between servers did not receive it until my meal was nearly over. I did not feel the restaurant was safe as stairs were not visible/poorly lit. Probably would not return or recommend.
Keg is one of those chains that you either really like... or you don't. I am not a fan of their steaks, which is their main offering and something (tastewise) was particularly off that night. Service is consistently good, and the atmosphere was fine - but the Keg is the place I tend to go to... if everything else is closed...
We are no strangers to The Keg, so we are used to feeling very comfortable at any of their locations. The first thing I noticed on this occasion was that the music, while you didn't have to strain to listen, still allowed easy conversation. The musical selections were current and enjoyable, but never rowdy. Our server (I believe his name is Chris) was outstanding in his attendance to our needs. We had over 2 hours to spend waiting for a Gordon Lightfoot concert (speaking of outstanding!) and Chris happily helped us to spread our enjoyment over that time with lovely cocktails and appetizers. I had the lobster entree, which was generous and succulent, and my husband ordered prime rib, which was also superbly prepared. I ordered coffee with Bailey's as my liquid dessert, so Chris brought a lovely handcrafted double shot espresso that held its own with that double Bailey's (I always love surprises!). We commented for several days that it was the loveliest dinner out that we had enjoyed in a long time. It won't be long before I feel another lobster craving coming on. :-)
The greeter was friendly. David was an excellent server. The strip loin and prime rib were cooked as requested - medium well. The Cote du Rhones was fine. The darkness added to the privacy, but the room was a bit too dark. This was a first-time visit, but not the last.
We started in the bar area and met some friends before our reservation. We told the front desk staff of our time and that we would be at the bar. They came and got us a few minutes after our reservation time, so that we wouldn't miss it. Even though it was quite crowded - being a Saturday night and all - it never got really noisy. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. We had the steak special and also the Keg burger - both were cooked to perfection. Once we let dinner settle, there was even room for dessert, which was the super tasty creme brulee. We had a reservation for 2 and then had a third person join us for dessert after. We stayed over 3 hours there and not once did we feel rushed or pushed out of the door. In fact, after we had settled the bill, the server was leaving as her shift was over, but she made sure that someone else there would be happy to get us anything else should we require it. Overall, it was a great experience. I would recommend reservations though, especially on a weekend as you may have to wait awhile without one.
Our waiter was top notch to start, really enjoyable guy! We came for a friendly couples date. We have been to the Keg many times and 95% of the time we know and crave the meal we know is coming!
Unfortunately this visit was a little bit dissapointing.
Our caesar salad appetizers arrived 7 minutes before our companions baked brie and calamari (which was laden with way too many jalapenos!)
Sirloin Oscar...mmm! My favorite!
Steak cooked perfectly, but asparagus were just 4 two inch tips and hollandaise was only about 2 tablespoons, shrimp seemed smaller than usual and scallops were limited to two! Over all, the dish was dry and dissapointing. My husband as usual had 14oz. Prime Rib! He got an unusally fatty slice which was opposite what our companion recieved...consistency at the table is mandatory!
My filet was thin and overdone, with a significant amount of gristle around the edges. We were unable to order a half-litre of wine so had to opt for a whole bottle and take the remainder home. The bread served before the meal was excellent. Our server (female) seemed pre-occupied with something else. On previous occasions we had a different experience and were more than satisfied. Perhaps it was simply an "off" night, being a Monday in October. We will try again.
We had a reservation for 7:45. We didn’t get seated until 8:30. There was no communication to let us know that it was going to be a late seating. We had to go up and ask when we were going to be seated. We asked at 8:00 and was told the current table was just finishing up and and we were going to be seating very shortly. It took another 1/2 hour from that conversation. Once we had been seated our server came up immediately to take our drink orders, but did not apologize for the late seating. I’m sure he wasn’t aware of our original reservation time, but somebody should have communicated that to him, in my opinion. It took about 15 mins to get out drinks which seems extremely slow. It was now one full hour since our original reservation time and we had just received our first drinks. We ordered our food and then the food took another 30 mins minimally to come. It is now 9:15 when we got our food. Our second drink order took another 15 mins to come and once it had come, it was incomplete, missing two beers that were apparently out of stock plus three shots that came later. The server had one of three beers and tried to pour that one beer into three glasses to serve us which seemed unprofessional. When he poured the beer he carelessly missed the glass and poured it on the table. Once we had finished our food and our two drink orders we had been in the restaurant for three hours. It seemed like every single employee was scrambling around and it wasn’t a smooth operating system that I have come to expect from The Keg. This was without a doubt the worst experience I’ve had at The Keg. I was extremely dissapointed with the service and was going to call to speak to the manager the next day, but I got this email to send my feedback instead. I hope this was a “one off” as The Keg is better than the service we experienced.

Our server James seemed to be having a bit of an off day, he did get my choice of sides wrong but we chose not to make an issue of it and did not bring it to his attention. He did, however, make an excellent suggestion regarding wine. It was delicious and paired well with my meal. James is very friendly and helpful. I would visit the Fort Street location again. The Quadra street location is our usual place to go.
If the Keg is going to ask users on Open Table if the visit is a birthday celebration, then they need to make a point of acknowledging those responses.
Because I was prompted on Open Table to state if it was a birthday, I indicated 'yes', yet not until we had finished our meal and dessert and had received our bill did the server then ask if this was a special occasion. Once we had told her that it was indeed a birthday celebration did she let us know that my husband's dessert was on the house. She then had to change our bill. She felt bad and it was a wasted opportunity for the Keg to have shown us special appreciation for having shared the information on the app for which they had originally requested.
