The Keg Steakhouse + Bar - Fort Street Ratings and Reviews
This was our first visit to this Keg and we were visiting from out of town. We went to the Front Street Keg for a family dinner. One of the members in our group has mobility issues and this Keg is not readily accessible for her. There is no place in front to drop anyone at the door so you have to stop in the street in front and almost get hit by cars turning around the corner.
All of the regular dining area is up flights of stairs so we could not go there. We were put in the lounge and the ambiance in there was not what we were expecting. It was dark and we were a bit cramped in the booth we had.
We will have to find another place that is more accessible for future dining.
I’ve been to the Keg many times so knew what to expect. This time it was only ok ish. My fiancé is really particular about having three limes with his beer, he said it twice and our waiter repeated it back to him. Beer came, no limes. He asked for the limes and the waiter did many other things before finally (about 15 mins later) bringing the limes to the table whilst delivering a drink order to another one. We had appies then our mains arrived my potato was hot but my steak (requested medium) was stone cold. It literally felt like it had been in the fridge! I don’t usually mind lukewarm food and almost never send anything back but cold meat isn’t my thing so after I tried a couple bites I told our waiter, he apologized and took my whole plate potato and all. My fiancé had the prime rib, I had a bite while waiting and it was delicious. When the waiter came back with my entree he had my exact same plate with a now cooler potato and veggies and reheated steak! I thought that was kind of tacky as I was expecting a new steak but whatever, didn’t feel like making more of a fuss and didn’t mind the lukewarm accompaniments (but if it was my fiancé who likes his food HOT there may have been trouble ;) When our waiter came back to ask how my reheated steak was I said “well it’s warmer now” which he took to mean as “wonderful”. I hadn’t taken anyone aside to specifically mention that it was my dates bday but had selected bday in the open table reservation so I thought that would be conveyed to the restaurant. To be fair our waiter did ask if we wanted dessert and we said no. Maybe my fault for not mentioning it but every time I’ve been to the Keg before for a Bday a piece of Billy Miner pie with a candle in it has always appeared without asking and makes the occasion more special. This time there was no bday pie. When the bill came 40% was deducted from my main so made me feel a bit better. Overall OK, could have been better experience.
From start to finish everything went very well. Our table request was accommodated, and our reservation allowed for a seamless entrance. Our courses were spaced out perfectly (props to our server), and the food was cooked perfectly (props to the cooks)! Our waiter was friendly, and was a great server.
Well we spent New Years Day Dinner
What a lovely dinner , our waitress I think her name was Christina, but not positive!
She made the time we had very fun, she New about what wine I may like
To the fantastic dinner all the way to the very end of our evening .
Dinner and our lovely waitress made New Years Day dinner so nice

The service was terible. They ended up being busy but then they should have staff. One meal came out very late, drinks were terribly slow, even water such that we were eating the meal without a drink. The Steaks were good, but it will be a long time before we go back. No one asked how things were even though it should have been clear we were not happy. Even the manager did not ask. I guess they knew things were poor.
Decent food, not particularly tasty steak, even their most expensive bone-in strip recommended by our waiter. Our wine came only with the main course (about 30 minutes after ordering it), and only after reminding the server, which is really too late in the meal if you want to relax over starters. This was new-year's eve so I can excuse a lot as down to what appeared to be too few staff and a noisy crew of late diners (and good for them having fun!). Having said that, the food was really just average, as was the service, and it is on celebratory nights that I have found the best restaurants actually "perform under pressure" demonstrating why they are the best. This is a chain steakhouse - in every way.
Our experience was very rushed. I understand it was New Years but it really felt like they were trying to get us in and out even though our reservation was for 4:45pm! Our bread and appetizer arrived long before our wine did! Our mains then arrived before we had a chance to fully finish the appetizer. I would have preferred a glass of red wine with dinner but because my first glass of wine didn’t arrive until my meal almost did I had to pair the two. We ordered dessert as well. They squeezed all this in under an hour. We left at 5:45pm- bread, salad, main, dessert, coffee all in one hour.
Unfortunately our son’s dinner came out after we had nearly finished ours (chicken fingers). His chicken was completely burnt - the server was attentive and offered to bring out another plate for him. The second one took over 20 mins and we had our jackets on by the time it arrived. This hadn’t been our previous experience at the Keg. My husbands MR steak was slightly charred and my side baked potato was also half burned. Perhaps new kitchen staff but unfortunate. The fingers were comp’t and we were offered a dessert. We are going again soon so hopefully this was just an off night (Saturday eve at 500pm).
The three of us very much enjoyed our Escargots as well as our 10oz prime ribs & the one delicious 8oz sirloin Oscar, which was accentuated by our GS JT Merlot.
The atmosphere was good; I was the one out of the threesome who found it a bit too noisy.
We had a great birthday dinner.
Our digestive system very much appreciated walking back home.

We had guests from out of town who were very impressed with the over all setting and their meals.... we had a reservation and when we arrived I felt our table was in too high of a traffic area so when I asked us to be relocated after we were seated we are not only accommodated quickly but with great service enthusiasm and professionalism while the staff were very busy with the overal rush of the restaurant. It was impressive to say the least.
Thank you for our fun night.
We booked 6 weeks ahead for Christmas Eve and we were seated right next to the kitchen. Our waiter did not spend much time with us and we had to flag down another waiter when one steak ordered medium rare was burnt top and bottom. The second steak ordered medium came blue rare. That steak was sent back and came back the same with the whole plate cold. When we said we were very disappointed the waiter checked with the manager and they did not charge for the meal not eaten and offered free dessert. That was appreciated but did not make up for the lack of service, atmosphere and poor food from the kitchen. We have had wonderful meals and service in the past from The Keg but would hesitate to return.
Was here on Christmas Eve for annual family dinner. Food was good - quick considering how busy the restaurant was - and prices were OK, mid ranged. Service was hit and miss - empty plates took some time to be removed from table after applies and mains. Also, we ended up ordering side veggies with our mains because the menu wasn't clear to us - it suggested mains (not Keg Classics) came with one side choice, so we chose baked potatoes - and the server didn't offer any information after we ordered a side veggie plate, so we were surprised to get beans and red peppers with each our mains - plus the side veggies. The kids meals need more choices - such as a pasta offering or grilled cheese (think Bin4 grilled cheese). Otherwise was an enjoyable dinner.
The dinner was excellent. They have always been masters at cooking a steak. My disappointment was with the service. We were rushed through our meal, the entrees were dropped onto our table while we were still eating our salad. The table not being big enough to handle all the food we reluctantly gave up our salads which were whisked away like magic with little or no regret on the part of the servers. We were offered bread which never arrived. The bill was presented just seconds after we declined dessert. One of the shortest dinners ever at the Keg! We have been going to the Keg for years in many cities and have had some excellent dining experiences. Not sure we will want to visit this location again which is too bad as it is local for us.
Anniversary dinner but this was not acknowledged by Keg staff (in the past we were offered a complimentary dessert). A quick wait for table upon arrival, seated at a table with a chilly breeze. Rated as a fair experience but not as good as in the past or similar steak restaurants. Pricey.
Received no open table 100 point reward either?
The Keg is our favourite place to celebrate a special occasion. The food is always great and the service is excellent. Our favourite thing to order is the prime rib, which is melt in your mouth fantastic! We’ve never been able to find it’s equal elsewhere. That being said, my husband recently tried a sirloin steak and said it was equally as good. A visit to The Keg is always a memorable experience!
Having had several years of marginal dining experiences in Victoria BC, and also with the more recent incarnations of Keg Restaurants everywhere, we were very pleasantly surprised to have been given a table in the quietest section of the restaurant - just what we needed.
The menu seems to have reverted to its roots, which is good - basic good quality beef, competently prepared, and presented gimmick-free. My one regret is the contined demise of the self-serve salad bar, one of George Tidball's greatest innovations!
One of our pet peeves about Victoria dining is that many places offer BC wines ONLY. One suspects for political reasons, because a few other parts of the world do actually turn out some quite respectable plonk at more reasonable prices. It was refreshing to have a more cosmopolitan choice of red wines, many of which were quite drinkable (including the one we selected!).
We were treated very well by both reception and table staff, and are most impressed with the apparently young, enthusiastic and competent management, which bodes well for the future.
Well done everyone, and we shall CERTAINLY be back to see you again next time we come to town.
