A long-standing favorite of ours. Incredible shrimp and grits. Great salads and soups. Always a good vegetarian pasta option available.

This evening out may have been the best dining experience of my life; certainly in the top few. My brother was in town visiting and we had that to celebrate as well as some catching up to do. Thanksgiving was approaching and we considered this our holiday dinner as well.

We both had fish entrees; halibut and salmon. Both were exquisitely prepared, combining interesting flavors and textures with aplomb. The local apple-pear cobbler we both had for dessert was delicious beyond the ability of my vocabulary to describe. High compliments all around to the kitchen.

Also of note was the superb service, which was expertly paced and knowledgeable without being obtrusive. The waiter served the wine very professionally. He was friendly and professional in measures which enhanced the meal. Kudos to our waiter and his colleagues on the service staff.

We were seated upstairs in a small dining room which was perfect for our evening plans. Conversation in the room was quiet but affable and lively. ( We surmised that William Faulkner may have written and/or slept there while the house was his residence...)

A wonderful and memorable evening of sublime dining pleasure! Thanks to all at The Ivy Inn!

From the moment we arrived everything was perfect. Our waiter gave us just the right level of attention. The drinks and menu were imaginative spins on the classics. Our group had a grand time passing tastings around. While I thought the shrimp and grits was a standout, a touch of smokiness on the shrimp over grits that were rich and creamy, everything I tasted (and I tasted everything) was outstanding.

There's a reason The Ivy Inn is the top restaurant in Charlottesville. The food was AMAZING. The wait staff are on top of their game. You can't beat the price! They treat you like a close family member from the minute you walk in the door. Will definitely come back again.

Got together with long time friends we hadn't seen in two years. Seated upstairs in cozy dining room. Great service from beginning to end. Really good food... three different entrees ordered and all were outstanding. Lingered over dessert and finished up wine. HIghly recommend!!

We just had a great evening with candlelight, soft music and great service. The food of course is the highlight. We were dressed casually and felt comfortable. I would highly recommend The Ivy Inn!

My wife, daughter and myself had the pleasure of eating at the Ivy Inn this past weekend. Our daughter had moved to the area and the restaurant was recommended by some local patrons. It exceeded our expectations. the food was fabulous and we really appreciated the head chef serving our entre and having an opportunity to chat with him. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable but not intrusive. We found the food with its local flavor to be the highlight meal of our visit.

Disappointed with this choice for a nice dinner out. Service was lacking and, despite many empty tables, we were put in a plastic covered outdoor structure. Food was only meh and very overpriced.

We were seated in the "outdoor" section. Rainy day at 49 degrees. They had two noisy heaters heating the outdoor section. I got a little chilly, and traded sides of the table with my spouse. Our waiter was fabulous. I was disappointed that they did not have mushroom soup the night we were there. Our courteous waiter went and rustled up two small cups from the kitchen. For free. I was yummy. My raw oysters were fresh and delicious. My foie gras was perfect. My spouse and I got the bone-in pork chop "Tomahawk" for two. It was perfect. The cook came to our table, and sensing that we were hillbillies from southwest Virginia, encouraged me to grab it by the bone and eat it Henry the VIII style. I did, and ate every yummy bite. Wine was moderately priced. I tried to support Virginia, and started with a Virginia sparkling wine, Thibaut-Janisson. Yuck. Then switched to a bottle of reasonably priced California Roederer Estate bubbly. Absolutely perfect. Fabulous dinner and fabulous service. I would just recommend to eat inside if possible, especially in November!

Outstanding quality and service at a fair price! Salads are some of the best ever! Seafood was cooked just right and the lamb was incredible! Seasonal vegetables enhance all entrees! A true gem!

Went with hubby for a birthday celebration on Halloween. We sat upstairs in a small room that didn't offer much of an ambiance. Fortunately, all of the couples in the small room were using their "indoor" voices, so it was reasonably quiet. We had the beef tenderloin and crab pasta and enjoyed both. We were treated to a glass of sparkling wine for my birthday, which was a nice touch. Our waiter was outstanding. Attentive, without being overly so, and very pleasant. Will return.

I dined with three friends and it was soooo nice to be in a quiet restaurant where we could actually talk and have good conversation! We were all very very pleased with our meals! The waitress was very competent and knowledgeable of the menu details. They were willing to split dishes allowing us to order appetizers, entrees and dessert! I will definitely be back!

It was a lovely way to end a wonderful day of wine tasting in the area. The dinner was super from the osso buco to the tenderloin. Service was great, helpful, but unintrusive. Speciality cocktails were also a hit. I will definitely recommend it highly and return soon. The menu with happy birthday on it and the glass of champagne to start as birthday favors were a nice touch.

I am never disappointed with the food and ambiance at The Ivy Inn. It is a family favorite because the menu is varied, even though I often ended up eating the lamb entree. The dining space offers different rooms so even with groups the noise level is moderate. The wait staff is attentive but not overly so; Chef Angelo knows his craft and is a delight!

We visited on my wife's birthday. They presented us with a complementary glass of sparkling wine just as soon as we sat down, along with an amuse bouche almost as soon as we were seated. We had a wonderful meal, the pace was leisurely, but service was attentive. All in all it was a great birthday celebration.

I had planned a day trip to Charlottesville with a friend and we wanted a nice place to end the trip with. We picked the Ivy Inn based on previous reviews and I can honestly say that it was beyond fabulous. Amazing delicious! I had the crab soup, the Angus tenderloin, and for dessert, the key lime pie. The meat was perfectly cooked and every bite was like heaven. Everything we ate was outstanding. It is now three days ago and I am still savoring that meal. I hope to go back soon. Highly recommend!

The service and food were excellent. Our table was too close to another table. The guests at that table spoke too loudly. I would suggest a dress code. It's a top restaurant and people should dress accordingly.

Dinner took 2 3/4 hours. Area is in a water restriction due to drought. Had to ask several times for water before it was brought. Server pleasant but way over worked. Kitchen apparently understaffed. Food was good, but not outstanding. Local coupons expiring may have caused the problem.

Located in an old house. Cozy. Very good food, and waitress was attentive but the food was very slow to come out. We were there in a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was only moderately busy. It was the same at our previous visit. We were not in a hurry, and we were out in about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Mixed experience. We were sat upstairs by the rather brusque hostess in a room that lacked the charm/warmth that seemed more evident in downstairs dining room. It just felt very closed-in and made me want to redecorate, or at minimum, uncover the windows. Anyway, I got over it quick enough to move on to ordering dinner. We began with smoked trout appetizer and wild mushrooms dish that was modified upon my realizing that it was supposed to be prepared with bacon. I asked waiter to cancel instead of ask for modification, but waiter quickly offered to have bacon withheld instead, so that was nice. Appetizers were pleasant-- but not "wow."(one reason I am not in favor of modifying a chef's dish) I ordered the "ceasar" salad and it was such a disappointment that it negatively affected my overall impression of restaurant. The lettuce was literally wet-soggy, and I don't think it was simply the bland dressing. Not sure what happened, but it was bad and ruined the enjoyment of the accompanying fried tomatoes (that were appealing. I ordered the half-order of ricotta eggplant ravioli, as did my husband, and we both enjoyed. Daughter ordered halibut and she said it was good. Enjoyed the lemon merengue ice-box cake desert. Overall, it was pleasant enough, but overall, not particularly memorable. I had hoped for something more.
