The Italian Barrel Ratings and Reviews
The one thing that bothered me was the price o the lobster pasta special for 36$ a disappointment amount lobster in recipe was pitiful .Also I recommend that the price should be told in the beginning. I must say it was very good . Your waitress Blair was excellent. I will be back I live in the quarter
The food was ok, but we’ve had better — particularly because half our party’s entrees were delivered 10 minutes after others and were substantially cold. With an automatic 20 percent gratuity for party of eight, service really was lackluster, at best. And we were packed in like sardines. Admittedly, it was New Year”s Eve, but we’ve had better food and service for a celebration, particularly for the price.
Italian Barrel is always on our New Orleans restaurant to-do list, especially after several Cajun meals. It is located at the end of French Quarter close to the French Market. It is a small restaurant, so reservations are recommended. Some of our favorite entrees include chicken or veal parmigiana, porcini and truffle ravioli, and nightly specials. Try coppa mascarpone or tiramisu for dessert. A litle overpriced, but you are in New Orleans French Quarter.
This was my second trip to the Italian Barrel. Just as good as the first time. It was my daughters 18th Birthday and my daughter in laws 27th. They had the table set up special for their birthdays and were so accommodating! Really enjoyed it. We will be back soon!
We made reservation for Dec 25. We have been to this restaurant many many times. When we were sat at our table we were given the menu and to our complete surprise it was an $85 PP plus 20% gratuity and tax set menu. Knowing there weren’t hardly any other options at 9:30pm on Christmas we felt trapped. Disappointing especially for other guests we had invited. There was no prior notice to this special set menu upon making reservation nor in a text or phone call to confirm reservation which was very disappointing. We totally felt tricked.
Food: Most of the food was good, but the entrees tasted like they had been on a buffet served up several hours after they were made. The bread was hard as a rock and not fresh. The dessert was very very tiny.
Service: Usually outstanding it was ok this time- nothing special.
Value: probably the most disappointing. So overpriced for what we got.
Excellent food and friendly service. We went for Christmas night and were surprised that they were only offering a prix fixe dinner for $85 per person. The maitre d' was gracious when we expressed surprise and let us discuss and decide. We went for it and were glad we did. The food was authentic and delicious and the service was friendly and timed just right. We were seated right next to the bathroom, so not ideal, but the restaurant is tiny and they do the best they can to hide it. I love this place and will definitely return. And we found free parking on the street in front of the restaurant!
Although there weren't many people at the restaurant, it was very loud. 2/4 surrounding tables were very loud and I could actually hear one of the old ladies on the next table talking about my husband and I and another lady on a different table cackling loudly every few minutes. I know the restaurant cannot control the the people who come in, but I do wish they had asked the people to tone it down out of consideration for the other diners.
The service was extremely slow. We did a prix fixe menu and we had to wait over 10-15 minutes between courses in 1-2 instances. The restaurant menu did not say they would include a 20% gratuity automatically (this is typically done for larger groups only). I did notice that my check although accurate in terms of the amounts and the contents of the meal, listed the number of diners as 5 instead of 2. It made me wonder if they were trying to get the billing system force a 20% gratuity. Considering they were working on Christmas, I think the gratuity is totally okay but I wish they were upfront about it.
Ate here on Christmas Day. Greeted and seated immediately . Wait staff was courteous, prompt and friendly. Food was very good. BUT I was most impressed by the fact that the dipping oil and freshly grated cheese ( for the bread) was at our disposal the entire time. That's seems to be a rarity at most restaurants.
We got to the restaurant a little late on Christmas Eve. They were running behind also, but this was understandable, given the night. The manager offered us complementary wine or a cocktail, which was nice. We were seated in about ten minutes anyway. The food was fantastic and fresh. It was a glorious night and meal!
My guest chicken was burnt on the bottom, they did take it off the bill which was nice. Shrimp and pesto was decent but not great. Meatball appetizer was dry and not very hot . Our service was excellent so that was a plus. Probably wouldn't return again with so many other places downtown to eat at.
My husband had the filet with peppercorn sauce. I had chicken parmesan. We had mussels for our appetizer. All were delicious and served properly. One suggestion would be to offer a smaller portion of steak. 12 oz is rather hefty serving and was the reason I didn’t order the steak. Service was the best you could ask for. I believe Alberto was his name (from TX). Have already recommended the restaurant many times.
The problem was with the management. For whatever reason,
they only had two waiters for the entire restaurant. So, while we were seated promptly, we waited 15 minutes before we could get someone to give us a glass of water. Then it turns out the “waiter “ was actually the bartender trying to help out. Finally a young woman announced she was the server and took good care of us the rest of the meal. Our dinner was fine but not special. I had a wonderful tomato, basil and mozzarella salad which was abundant and tasty! It Raised our expectations. However, the entree’s of Penne ala Vodka and Chicken Parmigiana while large portions, were mediocre. The penne was less than al dente and gummy. The chicken was mediocre and the sauce bland. They have a nice restaurant here, friendly staff and a nice ambience. The place was packed. I’ll just assume that our experience was an anomaly.
A true gem in the heart of the French Market. We made reservations (which you’ll probably need) and we’re seated right away. Great wine list and multiple food options. We had the clams as an appetizer and they were delicious and a very large portion. I had the Chilean sea bass with sautéed veggies and my husband had the veal. Best fish I’ve ever eaten and, again, very generous portion. Finished with a dessert that was out of this world. Definetly going back.
This was the worst dining experience ever. We had a party of 7 for my two children’s birthdays.
There was a party of 32 in the middle of the restaurant that was out of control the decibel level was so high our ears were ringing. We could not talk to each other it was so loud.
We have eaten there at least twenty times.
It has never been like this. The waiter told us when we were seated that the large group was out of control and apologized but told us they were almost done. Well the fact is they hadn’t even ordered yet. They got even louder as time went on. I really enjoy this restaurant but if ever presented with this situation we will politely leave before ordering.
I really wanted to like this place, and chose it because it serves my date's favorite dish. Unfortunately, there was a large 3-table party going on, which made the volume level so loud we could barely carry on a conversation. To make matters worse, we were seated a two-top table near an odd "nook" where receipts were transacted and some courses were prepared?? Strange. Two large round tables were rolled past our table as we dined into the nook for storage. Overall, the vibe was a complete "miss." Food was ok.
This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and did not disappoint! The service, ambiance and food were great! We had the veal meatballs as an appetizer and they were moist and delicious. The homemade marinara was perfectly spiced. The house salad and dressing was light and refreshing. Our entree was chicken Parmesan and it was light and not heavy. Chicken was very tender and not dry. We will definitely go back and would highly recommend!
