The Italian Barrel Ratings and Reviews
We were referred to Italian Barrel as the best Italian in NOLA - we frequent Vincent’s and were told of Italian Barrel while at the Vincent’s bar. We’re going to stick with Vincent’s, far and away. The food at Italian Barrel is lackluster, and remarkably expensive. The ambience is good, as was the service, but it has to be thre in the food as well. Wet (huge) slabs of chicken breast as chicken Parmesan? Not much quality or artistry there. Needs some crunch on the bite! Lobster ravioli sounded good in principle, but was devoid of much filling and had a somewhat flavorless sauce. Oh well.
We went for my birthday and the service was great. I was so happy at the choice. The service was spot on. They were quick to respond but not hovering. They were very knowledgeable about the menu and their suggestions were wonderful. The food was out of this world good. My husband is not really a foodie and usually says restaurants are "ok". This time he said was very good and he would like to go back! WIN! This is a new favorite. We will definitely be back. I also like the fact that is on the edge of the French Quarter and much easier to get to than many of the restaurants in the Quarter.
My wife and I were looking for something a little different and we love Italian so we decided to try the Italian Barrel. The food was well prepared and the portions were ample. We shared the bruschetta appetizer and the veal parmigiana. The bruschetta was prepared with cherry tomatoes, basil, & thin slices of cheese. The tomatoes and basil tasted As good as ones in the peak of the season. It contained three large pieces. We ate two and took one home. The veal parmigiana was also excellent. It was served with a nice stir fry of summer squash and peppers. We both had enough left to take some home.
The restaurant was loud and chaotic and we waited and waited for the pasta course, while tables all around us were served and departed. The hostess finally explained that our dinners had ended up on the floor and had to be re-prepared — she would have told us sooner if she had known. Not explained was why our server couldn’t have figured that out and let us know herself. All in all we felt ignored, without really understanding why. The food itself was good or very good, but not great, but the overall experience was not good.
If there was a rating of 10 out of 10 then The Italian Barrel should get that rating!! Excellent!! Excellent!! Excellent!! Been to the best Italian restaurant in New York and this one rates head to head with the best of them! A must for anyone visiting New Orleans that wants something other then the local spice. Michelle our waitress was wonderful - efficient- friendly and very personable made us feel like we where family. Everything was made with the freshest ingredient with the same care your Grandmother would give as if she was cooking a holiday dinner for her family! Hands down the best dinner you will eat in New Orleans!! It was for us. Do not miss this hidden treasure!!
Had the Sea Bass , delicious- Hubby had the chefs special pasta. I think called Samantha. We also split a salad - very good! Wait staff was very attentive but not over bearing. Quiet calm atmosphere. We could have talked business but it wasn’t that kind of night. Definitely would do again!!! I passed on a mushroom pasta special that I later watched a man at the next table lick his plate over. Made me a little envious but I was trying to be waist line conscious. I will not make that mistake again.
You could tell the executive chef and owner has poured her heart and soul into the place. Not a single thing overlooked.
Been going to New Orleans for years and have never been here. Now, I’ll make a point to go every year. The cantaloupe and prosciutto was delicious as flavorful as was the special of sea bass on greens. We dined at the bar with a true Italian, direct from Venice, Denis. He was terrific. Can say enough great this place.
So happy I came across this amazing little restaurant. The service and management here are Very personable and accommodating. Food was excellent portions are generous and really enjoyed the charcuterie plate. Can’t wait to come back to New Orleans to eat here again
Had looked forward to going to the Italian Barrel for some time. Went spur of the moment, was easily seated. Service was good, but not great. My wife had a pasta dish the she was happy with. I has chicken parmigian, it was mushy with little flavor. There are clearly better places for Italian food in NOLA. One and done!!!
I normally give I.B. 5 stars - all around. This night was a miss completely. We had an 8:30 p.m. reservation. We were seated promptly. Our waiter Johnny was very personable and pleasant. Some of the strikes were: Out of lasagna, then we ordered the meatball appetizer to be informed - out of that as well. Service seemed to be slower than normal - they seemed understaffed. One of us ordered a special that had absolutely no flavor (very unusual for I.B.!) My dish the pumpkin ravioli was perfect. When our entrees were served the guy (not our waiter) asked would we like pepper and cheese ... yes please -- he never returned. Bread was elusive earlier as well. Dessert was fantastics (the hazelnut gelato). I just think we hit them on an off night - which is definitely a shame at those prices.
Whenever I am in town I must stop in the Italian Barrel it always hits the spot and keeps me from having a hang over from all the hand grenades. This time we brought 4 friends and all very beyond pleased. There is sooo much good food in NoLa but this place is at the top of the list.
Service was on the slow side and my chicken parmigiana was overcooked. There was no bread served (maybe a first at an Italian restaurant). Overall both the wine list and the dinner menu were relatively expensive for at best a mediocre dining experience. Also of note the table we were seated at looked at the bathroom, which we had to look into everytime the door was opened.
Cramped spot; Loud due to tables one on top of another. The staff was friendly but the execution of service was terrible (i.e. took 3 attempts for water and wine) - I even had to grab someone to settle my bill ...no one knew who was doing what!; Food - um, horrible. Had to ask for the bread that was suppossed to have been brought to table - I should have spared them. It was some toast with no seasoning at all; The spaghetti with "pesto sauce" and shrimp was a disaster - the pesto was not fresh - it was blackish green and the amount used just overwhelmed the dish..the shrimp were good; The lasagna was not a baked lasagna - it was some slop layered and no depth of flavor. Save your money (go eat pizza somewhere...New Orleans is not known for Italian - evident in the limited number of Italian restaurants.
Unfortunately I was quite disappointed. The noise level was awful, the food was OK. This is the fourth time I have frequented this restaurant, all the other visits have been great. I had out of town guests visiting me and they were also disappointed. Our waitress was awesome. Everything thing else was disappointing.
The food and service at this restaurant is excellent, along with a very nice wine list. The food and atmosphere makes you feel like you are in Italy. We have been there for both lunch and dinner and both are excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Italian meal.
With the threat of Hurrican Nate approaching, many restaurants were thinking of closing and were low on staff. But not at the Italian Barrel. As usual, great service and authentic Italian. Loved meeting the family next to us who were celebrating a 69th birthday---clearly, they were regulars.
I was extremely disappointed with this restaurant. Lamb Chop was well done. The pasta dish we ordered we had to send back it was too salty. The service was terrible. The waiter knocked over a half a glass of red wine. Ask the waiter if he was going to replace the wine and he informed me that there wasn't much in the glass when he knocked it over. He brought the glass of wine back and had very little of wine that he poured in the bottom of the glass. He should have brought at least a half or full glass back. He and the manager both cop a real bad attitude. I'm a local here in the quarter I have sent them a lot of business and I will never again recommend this restaurant from my experience that we encountered.. for the price they charge the food in my opinion and I have traveled the world was mediocre.
I have eaten at a lot of Italian restaurants with both Northern and Southern cuisine. This was just ok. If was good but not great. Definitely not worth the 20 minute walk from Bourbon Street. The mussels had no flavor. The breast they served was basically toast. The salad was excellent- (we had the prosciutto and fig salad on special.) For dinner I had the veal porcini. It was just ok. The veal was tender but a little salty and the mushrooms were not flavorful. They were wet and warm and that's about it. My husband went for the baked lasagna. He said "good but not enough layers and not the best I have had." Overall I would say the reviews and the awards on this restaurant hyped it up more than necessary. Our waiter was great and the ambience was cool but try other places first.
