Although we had a booking they were not expecting us. They had run out of the majority of things on the menu and therefore we decided to leave. Although disappointed to begin with, it worked out well in the end as we went to the chamberlain instead which was really lovely and I highly recommend
Regrettably the Island had overbooked, and as a result we were not seated in the upstairs dining area as we had been on numerous previous occasions but in the main pub area. This was not conducive to a family meal as there was lots of swearing going on from the regular pub goers and as they were extremely busy it took over 30 minutes before we were be served our meal.
As I mentioned earlier we have dined at the island on previous occasions and really enjoyed the experience , but sadly on this occasion the Island fell below their previous high standards.
We have been to the island a few times. Normally the service is great and the food is excllent. This time, at 8pm we were the only ones and it was the 24th of December. We would have thought more people would go out. There wasn't a seasonal menu which was confusing as there was actually one. We were told we needed to pre-order and that wasn't clear on the website and on Toptable. None of the food seemed available and the service was awkward. Overall, the food was still great, but a disappointment to what we usually call a good gastro pub.
We were looking for somewhere which is child friendly as we have twins that like to run around. The staff were totally amazing and we were never made to feel like the girls were in the way.
Sadly the food was average. I wish it was better as it would have been good to go back with the kids.
Island is lovely venue helped make my birthday extra special chief and staff are brilliant. Food is top quality not the more pub food. Defo go back again
The Island used to be a really great place to eat but I was appalled by how much it has declined in the last year. No staff whatsoever for about the first ten minutes of our arrival so we ended up seating ourselves and finding our own menus. Given that the restaurant was virtually empty it was surprising how long it took to serve us. The food, when it eventually arrived, was barely warm, pretty much inedible and was laughably overpriced given the poor quality. The experience of eating at The Island was not good at all. Having said that, if you don't care about food or service and you would just like somewhere local to drink pleasant wine and eat fat chips (the only food we had that was hot and tasted good) then this could be the place for you. I would like to be able to give The Island the benefit of the doubt and think that they were having a bad day in the kitchen, but serving food that poor is inexcusable...
I am a regular at the Island, however we received a greeting from one member of staff that was rude. We didn’t feel the warm welcome we usually do. The food portion was very very small, and despite me asking why the portions had shrunk since my last visit, another staff member said that he’d served food every Sunday and that this was the standard portions and that there was nothing wrong with it. My meat was not medium it was tough and more well done. Pls see photo.
Good service. Very welcoming. Super food from an excellent new chef. Great!
Service a little slow, excellent food, great atmosphere, planning to return to enjoy the great variety of food they offer
Went for Sunday lunch for my birthday with family ( including a chatty two year old and a sleepy 6 month old) great food, attentive staff and lovely atmosphere
Really nice place and the food was good. However it was quite pricey, costing over £75 for just 2 Sunday lunches and chips and a couple soft drinks
After traveling from Bath for a 4 generation family get together age range 4 - 83 we were really looking forward to lunch a we had been in 2 previous occasions and the roast dinner was amazing
Lunch was at 12.30 so everything should have been hot and fresh the potatoes were cold and stale the chicken was anemic looking dry and tasteless the 2 pieces of broccoli and the 1 long carrot were cold and rock hard the beef was tough fatty and inedible the Yorkshire pudding was burnt on outside and not cooked inside and there was HALF a cabbage on each plate
ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE not good enough by any standard
They did give us some discount but we will not go there again or recommend to anyone
For start we were the only people eating in there. The menus were incorrect and we were not told things were not included that we were paying for after we received the meal. There were no kids menus printed and we were not told the price until the bill arrived, £7.50 for kids meal seemed expensive when she ate about 2 chips. The roast children Sunday lunch was £17.00 and was really poor, children was tasteless and the beef was a very small serving. The waitress couldn't communicate with us clearly because of the language difference. I was very disappointed and will not be going back.
My wife and I love the Island and have been a couple of times. We went for Mother's day on Sunday taking our daughter. This is the first time we have been on a Sunday, and decided as it would probably be quite popular we booked for 4pm to ensure a table and a nice atmosphere. Sadly this backfired as when we came to order our food, everything we wanted was gone or unavailable. We were very disappointed by this as I would assume a popular place like this would have enough stock in especially on Mother's day. However I can say that although disappointed the service was great and personal, and I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go again. If choosing a Sunday though, I may book a little earlier! ;)
Went for Sunday lunch with friends and 3 young children. Kids were well looked after and welcomed, they tailored the menu to suit some fussy little eaters. Staff were lovely and very accommodating. Roast was absolutely enormous, couldn't finish it. Good selection of wine. Overall really nice and worth a visit especially with children.
I always like to come to your restaurant because it's nice place.
Nice menu, but our starter portions were small.
It's a good hideaway for none locals. On a good day outside is great. On a rainy day inside lower level is nice. Upper level eatery is very spacious as you don't have to rub elbows with other guests. Once in a while type of place for me.
Everything was awesome, they took a bit longer to bring our food because of a kitchen issue but were super apologising and even offered us free dessert. Great choice wines, delicious food, relaxing interior decoration. Will definitely be going back
Excellent atmosphere and very friendly staff. Food was good but slightly more options on the menu would be nice. The table at the top is fantastic.
Nice friendly environment, good service and good food. What else do you need?
Not impressed on his occassion food took over 40 minutes to arrive and with two young boys this wasnt good. when it arrived the burgers were luke warm at best
This location is great for drinks but the dining is a bit over priced and quite tasteless i found. Also the menu changes and what is on this website may not be true which is disappointing. Cannot fault the service.
Visited last Saturday in a group of 6. Visited because of other reviews and wasn't disapointed.
Not a typical pub menu hence the label gastro pub. Good selection and all out food was superb. The service was also very good and they did't even charge for the soft drinks one of our party had which was a nice touch.
Had a really great evening with a friend, food was really lovely and the staff were very friendly without being overly attentive .
A great place to go to catch up with friends, a great place for families.
A couple of us out of seven enjoyed our food but others found theirs over-salted; service was nice and friendly, but slow with the children's side dish of vegetables arriving after we'd all finished our meals. I'd say overall, could be better.
The Island is really local to me and I've been in and out a fair few times for drinks, which are normally good. We've had dinner here before and though the food was good, the service left a lot to be desired. I had some family round and thought we would give it a try again for Sunday lunch.
We were so, so disappointed. Firstly, they tried to sit us at a table where someone was sitting (on the table with a baby in tow!). I asked if there was another table and luckily we were placed at the other end of the dining hall on a clean table. We were handed menus, and about 15 minutes later someone came to take our drinks order. After another 10 minutes we were given our drinks and asked 'Did the person who gave you the menus explain the food situation to you?'
Of course no one had... it turned out they only had roast beef left out of the 5 roasts on offer. This was annoying as we had already been there over 30 minutes and ordered drinks. We managed to find something for everyone and the food was okay, with the exception of my partner who ordered the lambs neck, which was tiny. It came with no sides and compared to our gargantuan roasts, looked terrible! Luckily we had ordered lots of sides separately so my partner was given a decent meal, but we mentioned the portion size to our waiter who offered us a complimentary side.
We waited about 45 minutes for our plates to be cleared or offered another round of drinks. We then waited 30 minutes before giving up on ordering dessert and asked for the bill.
The service here is totally haphazard, there are crying babies everywhere. Luckily the food is decent but for the price, you can get better elsewhere locally on Chamberlayne Road.
Great service. Very tasty salmon starter
Some very nice food marred by terrible service. Although the staff seemed friendly enough they could not comprehend or remember the order or figure out how to serve starters and mains separately - which seems pretty basic, especially for Sunday lunch on Father's Day. Wait times were very long, and while some people got their mains with the starters others had to wait an additional 45 minutes. For a large group this is not conducive to enjoyable time. It's too bad because the restaurant has a lot of potential
Good food, decent portions, nice staff but a bit run off their feet on the day we went. Good ambiance, nice space and they managed a large gathering well.
Very enjoyable and good quality Sunday roast with enormous Yorkshires. Restaurant has a lovely relaxed feel with service complimenting this. Great for a drink before/after dinner as well.
Overall the meal was good however my wife ordered the lamb shoulder which came out like it had been barbecued and was rock hard. Sent it back and they cooked another one which was lovely.
They just said sorry where I feel like they should have at least offered us some drinks as we basically had to eat our main courses separately.
I usually avoid traditional Sunday lunches in pubs as I find that veg has been pre-cooked, meat isn't up to the standard that I would choose myself, and yorkshire puddings are a dreadful disappointment. Not so here, and my fears couldn't have been further from the truth. Perfect veg with a hint of honey on the parsnips and carrots, an enormous yet perfectly cooked yorkshire pudding, and then tender beef, a delicious chicken leg and some of the finest pork belly I've ever had. 4 adults (2 had pork belly, one had beef and ale stew, I had the chef's special triple meat) and 4 kids (4-6) had one of the best lunches out I can ever remember. Thanks to all of the staff, but especially the chef!
Food was really good
Ambience was nice
Location is great
Child friendly (we saw 2-3 families having an early dinner)
Value: for 2 mains, 1 side, 2 hot drinks, we paid £23 each. Not too bad, for a decent sized portion, but perhaps a little highly priced for that area?
Service was ok - attentive at first (6pm)? But by desert time, our choice wasn't available (no apple crumble in a pub, really?) so we had a hot drink & chat instead, after which our waitress had gone home without handing over to another.
A great place to meet for an end-of-day drink especially if it's sunny. Food was superb and service attentive and helpful.
A booking for 5 adults and 3 kids, Sunday lunch was great and the staff looked after us as best as could be.
Excellent live mexican music and great food. Definitely recommended!!
Booked a table for 2. Shared a veggie platter and had the burger which was great !!! Proper Angus to be honest. Great place to eat after work or informal meeting. Nice and relaxed atmosphere. I'd go back for sure...
Service and ambience were perfect. Portions very generous. But roast beef (5 of us had it) was very tough (and the regular knives didn't help). It was supposedly a 28-day hung sirloin cut, which is very doubtful. Some roast potatoes were cremated, which didn't matter too much cos there were plenty of others that weren't over-roasted. They must not serve such tough beef....spoilt the lunch. Desserts delicious.
Nice place Ina pub / restaurant way with very good food and wine.
