About The Inn at Sugar Hill
The Courier Post recently honored the Inn with three & a half stars boasting, “Owner/chef Larry Boylan has put a kitchen full of thought into his waterside Inn at Sugar Hill.” That “thought” process has been ongoing for Boylan & his Inn for 22 years now, with no signs of letting up. “ I believe a good dining experience has the ability to not only nourish the body, but also nourish a persons’ soul… to be able to reach out & touch someone on that level is a high that gives me a lot of satisfaction & motivates me”, states Boylan. As an authentic Country Inn, the Inn at Sugar Hill has always strives to provide old world hospitality to both its’ dining & bed & breakfast guests. This philosophy has led to creating menus that reflect not only current culinary trends, but also respect the palates of those less adventurous. “Before I print a new menu I always look it over & say… what are my parents going to order & then… what are my teenage daughters going to like!

The Inn at Sugar Hill Ratings and Reviews
The dinner was overall very good with one exception, one of my guests ordered a hamburger medium well done, the burger was very burned as well as the bun which was actually charred black and this should not have even been presented to my guest the way it was. The server should have refused to present it and demand another burger on behalf of my guest. My guest didn't want to cause a commotion and disrupt the dinner so he ate what small portion he could without saying anything. Everything else was very nice and i would recommend your restaurant anytime.
Had dinner there with friends on Friday night. Neal the host who greeted us at door called us by name and walked us right to a table by the fireplace.
Helen our waitress was great! Both of them checked on us several times through the meal to make sure we were all ok.
Had the tuna special, crab cakes, stuffed shrimp and scallops. All four (4) meals were awesome and well portioned, no complaints.
Wife and I eat here a couple times a season when outdoor deck is open. Had been a few years since we ate inside, it won’t be a that long til we are back again!
We had not been to the Inn at Sugar Hill in many years. The ambience is very nice, but the restaurant was not busy at all for a Saturday night. We were seated in the bar area, and the only issue was an extremely loud patron at the bar. We would have preferred the dining room, but it looked empty.
I ordered the crab bisque which was touted as having an abundance of crab- it did not. Absolute no chunks at all, only "threads " of crab. Taste was salty. My husband had the pear salad and said it was very good. My Caesar salad on the other hand was dry and lacked adequate dressing. The lobster mac & cheese was incredibly salty and my husband could not eat it at all. The bowl was a decent size portion however.
For our main entrees I had the walnut crusted salmon (Dry and bland) and my husband had the mixed grill. The lamb chops were excellent- best thing on the menu. The salmon was a pass.
Overall the food needs work, but the service was great. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive.
We made an 8:30 reservation as this was the only available time for our party size. When we were seated at approximately 8:45 our server came over to our table and told us that she didn’t want to rush us but the kitchen closes at 9:00! What a way to start the tone of our dinner. Why would a restaurant have a time slot for an 8:30 reservation if they close their kitchen at 9:00????
We dined there a week ago on Friday. The service was outstanding and the place is so very beautiful. My wife had the sirloin steak which she loved and I could not resist the duck which was fantastic. While there we had the opportunity to check out the rooms at the inn. We were so pleased that we booked an overnight stay for Thanksgiving. Stop in when you get the chance you won't be disappointed.
We wanted to treat our daughter's in-laws to dinner to repay them for all of the times they hosted us at their summer home in Ocean City. We sat at a table by the window looking out on the river and it was lovely. Our server was friendly and very capable (it was her first night working there). Food was good, comparable price for a restaurant like it. Would recommend to anyone looking for ambiance.
My wife and I had our first Valentines Day dinner here 25 years ago. It was such a horrible experience at the time, I swore we'd never go back there again. I don't know what made me think to come back for our 25th wedding anniversary dinner, but I'm glad I did. The setting and service were wonderful. The food was very good, and the portions were respectable (a vast improvement from our first visit where the entree portions wouldn't rate a decent appetizer, but let's stay with the present). The Mediterranean Flatbread appetizer was a nice start. I had the Lamb Lollipops appetizer (there were only two with not a lot of meat on them, but what was there was delicious, and I can never get enough lamb). My son got the Salmon, which he said was very good. I got the Filet and Crab Cake combination. The 6 ounce Filet was done perfectly rare with an onion, mushroom, and balsamic reduction. The crab cake was phenomenal! There was so much meat, and so little filler, I couldn't figure out how it stayed together. Lumps of crab meat as big as my thumb. If they lose any points, it has to be with my wife's stuffed shrimp. 6 big shrimp stuffed with crabmeat, they had a very good flavor, but the shrimp were overcooked and chewy. Overall, the whole dining experience screamed redemption. I'm glad I decided to give it another try. You'll have room for dessert. I strongly suggest the Bread Pudding. In case you're wondering; Two cocktails, two appetizers, three dinners, and one dessert (we shared) came to $140.00 without the tip. Maybe not a weekly dinner place, but if you want to go someplace for a special occasion where you can actually have a conversation in a normal speaking tone and no din, give the Inn at Sugar Hill a try.
Went for our anniversary and we were so excited. After arriving we waited 15 minutes and still no waitress came to our table. We asked someone finally if we had a waitress. My salad was very small compared to table next to us. I had to send my food back because it was cold.
My husband and I went to the Inn at Sugar Hill to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. Food and service were mediocre at best, drinks not so much. Definitely stick with wine or beer as the mixed drinks were not great. Not overwhelmingly disappointing but we won't be going back.
Went to the Inn for my husband's birthday. Met friends as a surprise. Waitress 'T' was wonderful. Food is outstanding. Quiet room on a Thursday night. Couldn't ask for more ... and then we stayed 3 days. B&B breakfast amazing. Quiche one morning, Souffle the next, eggs, bacon, and magnificent oven roasted sliced red skinned potatoes on Sunday am. Again ... couldn't ask for more... You have to give it a try...
From beginning to end, we had a lovely time. Our waitress, T, was absolutely terrific! She knew the menu inside and out..personable..attentive but not annoyingly so. The java rubbed steak topped with truffle butter was to die for. The chicken with crab was delightful. It made me so happy to see they had mint chocolate martinis on the drink list. The dessert selection was painful ..so many delicious options to choose from! The prices were surprisingly reasonable to boot! All in all .. I'd highly recommend it!
Great dinner experience. Helen was my server as well as being the bartender. I never had to wait for any request. I enjoyed one of the daily specials, blackened tuna, with two sides and a salad. I had a glass of Pinot Noir and finish the evening with coffee and bread pudding for dessert. A wonderful evening out.
We have been here quite a few times. This particular evening was very busy so the service was a little slower. Everyone was pleased with their meal. This was the first visit for our guests and they said they would return. We enjoy the view, ambience and quaint setting. The food is always well prepared for our liking and the servers are friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed dinner with friends at The Inn at Sugar Hill in Mays Landing, NJ this week. The atmosphere was comfy and cozy. We also had a great view of the Egg Harbor River. The food and the service were fabulous. I highly recommend eating here...whatever the occasion.
Went to dinner with friends. My wife & I got there early so went to the bar for a drink. There were not two seats together at the bar, so we sat at a high top, figuring the bartender or a server would come by to take our order. Nope, not at all. Not even any eye contact from the bartender. So, we just sat there and waited for our friends. Guess the bartender is making so much money she only needs to serve people sitting at the bar.
Dinner, on the other hand was great. Food was excellent, server was friendly and attentive and the food was not auctioned off. Unfortunately it was raining so we didn't get outside, but it was really good none the less.
So go for dinner, just don't expect to get a drink before hand unless you are sitting at the bar.
This was our first time at Sugar Hill. We are always looking for new places near Ocean City to go to for something out of the ordinary shore meal. This place is a bit out of the way, but definitely worth the 30 minute drive. The restaurant is located on the river in Mays Landing with an area of tables along the bank for casual dining and drinking. Closer to the inn is a patio with some more tables and a gazebo. It was a lovely evening and we arrived a bit early so my husband and I took our pre dinner drinks - his white wine, mine a very tasty pomegranate cosmo - to the gazebo. When it was time for dinner, we were seated at a comfortable table by a window so we had a lovely view of the river. We shared the spinach and crab dip with pita chips. - hot, and tasty. I had the emerald scallops, he the chicken treviso, both delicious. Service was friendly, not rushed at all. I would definitely return for dinner, and also to try the casual dining by the river. The inn also has rooms for those wanting to stay the night.
My husband and I went on a Tuesday night to celebrate our anniversary. It was very romantic as the sun set. We had a great view of the water. Our waitress was kind and helpful. I got the walnut crusted salmon which was alright. I enjoyed eating my husbands veal parmesan. We would definitely go back again but I'll eat something different.
For the money you pay not up to my standards, Salad came out on a little saucer the Tuna steak was hard around the edges and it was suppose to come with a wasbai drizzle on top did not have it steak we ask for medium well came out with pink from top to bottom Ice tea was was very strong
