We always come here before a play at the Pantages theater and the food is usually pretty good. However, this time around they did not impress. We asked for a Caesar salad with no bacon but they still put bacon in it. Also, king crab is so much easier to eat if a pair of kitchen shears is used to put a slit down the shell which was not done until we asked. The Kampachi ceviche was pretty good. Overall though I expected more and it's definitely not as good as it used to be. Next time we will try different restaurant.
Beware: The menu you see online is not the one in the restaurant. We were disappointed to find that several of the dishes we came in for, are not on the current menu. That, combined with an inattentive server made for a less than stellar evening. The Crab stuffed Squash Blossoms were quite good.
They forgot our reservation. We requested a romantic table and for placed in the middle of a random section with the smallest table. It took 30 min to get our first drink. 45 min to get out first order or food (6 oysters). Then we ordered crab legs and gnocchi to share but only got the gnocchi bc our waitress didn’t hear our order. I will never go back nor will I ever recommend it we’ve already yelped, twitter and Facebook blasted the awfulness.
I really, really wanted to love this place, but I just can't. Was very excited to try it as a pre-concert dinner before a show at the Palladium across the street. Easy to make reservation with Open Table and got my table on time on a Saturday night at 7:15pm. Wait staff was efficient but never even cracked a smile. The cocktails are good, if somewhat pricey, and take a long time to get. Oysters were fresh and tasty. Ordered Crab Legs special for $35 and got two very unremarkable crab legs and some toast. Ordered a pasta and seafood dish and the pasta was hard as a pencil eraser. Probably sat overcooking while the cook worked on something else. Interestingly enough, the dessert was the best. Apple Beignets with some butterscotch sauce.
So overall, an appetizer, some crab, some pasta, two cocktails, two beers and dessert for $135 plus $25 tips to Miss Never Smiles for a grand total of $160.
Needless to say we had to hit Denny's on the way home. I'll go somewhere else next time.
The atmosphere is nice and it has a chill vibe. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our server didn’t hear about an item I ordered & forgot it completely, and he also gave me a little attitude when I asked about another part of the order.
The seafood and drinks were tasty, and we enjoyed the happy hour as well.
Dinner started promisingly with basil cocktails. Highlight was two-tier seafood platter--excellent quality and presentation (better than Water Grill, my previous standard). Unfortunately, the entrees were pretty grim, each for a different reason. The steamed crabs legs were delicious, but the meat was scanty (unlike the legs served at the next table, which were impressively meaty). And the skate was simply nauseating--mushy fish served with mushy vegetables and a pumpkin rice that didn't taste like pumpkin. Worse yet, it was presented (through "presentation" is too strong a word) as a mealy mixed-together mash. Dessert was a chocolate bread and butter pudding with very little bread and very little butter. A closing amaretto sour was delicious, though. My recommendation: come for cocktails and seafood platters, and stay away from everything else.
Inside lacked ambiance, the outside patio was really nice. The skate dish we had was absolutely delicious as was the salad and rose. Or drinks were really slow to come and forgotten twice, although they made up for it by giving us an extra on the house. The service was friendly but confused and spotty. We did end up making it in time to Pantages however. Good pre-show dinner. My friends didn't care for the Pug burger.
I've been going here for years, but it's sad. This was once a really good restaurant, but the chef doesn't seem to care about it anymore. Food quality is highly variable but more often disappointing than good. Got some not very fresh shellfish last time. Service is decent but used to be quite good. Feels like they're just waiting out their lease.
Once again we returned with the friends who insisted that Hungry Cat be crossed off their bucket list before they left town for Ohio, and yet again we weren't disappointed. They were to head off to a matinee of Hamilton, so Hungry Cat seemed like a no brainer beforehand for brunch. A Little Gem Lettuce Salad, Benedict, oyster shooter, Maryland Mary, Kamachi, grilled oysters and two fried squash blossoms with crab and a Sandra Oh sighting later, amazingly we still had room for apple beignets which were phenomenal! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
My only complaint was lack of refined finesse in the service. The waiter overexplained things and left things open in such a way as to make it seem as if the order was uncertain. It would have been nice if he'd confirmed the order as a whole.
We received a confirmation call from the restaurant with advice to come 15 minutes earlier because we were going to see Hamilton. They wanted to ensure that we would have time for our dining experience. Our waiter was Joseph, who was attentive and knew not only the menu but the craft beers we love! He made me a pomegranate cosmopolitan that was amazing., Because two, in our party of six, were going to be late, he made sure each of our guests were attended to. The food was exceptional. I had the squash blossoms with crab, my husband had the baby lettuces, others had the gnocchi, trout with spaetzle, and the lobster roll. Each was delicious with an excellent visual presentation. We will be back!

Seafood cooked well. This is the place. Restaurant manager working that afternoon was marvelous. I was running late and she informed me that one of my guest is there already. She offered her a glass of water and a magazine while she waited for me. We had a party of six, the steamed lobsters were so sweet and their claws were huge that we had to take pictures of it to share with our friends. The lobsters were very fresh. Manager recommended the sea urchin and said they were walking when they were brought in that morning. The whole sea urchin was the best that we have tasted, even better than what was served in many notable sushi restaurants. Of course I can never leave the restaurant without ordering my standby favorite, fish taco. Whenever I want great seafood without all the fancy sauces. This is the place.
The Hungry Cat is a go to before shows at the Pantages. The food is always fabulous and the staff knowledgeable and accommodating. I grew up spending summers in Maine, so a lobster roll is a nostalgic thing for me... I think the Hungry Cat has the best one in LA.
Great staff and menu - was seated next to high seated stools/bar area so was not great for ambience. The other side of the outdoor area was a lovely area to dine in. The other side a little forgotten and our waiter forgot about us at one point too.

I've been to the Hungry Cat several times. This was a pre-theater brunch with a friend. I've had good experiences before. This time, I didn't love my dish. I ordered a lobster roll, which did not have the punch of flavor I would expect, and the amount of lobster meat was underwhelming. My friend had the egg sandwich. She ordered her egg over medium and it looked overcooked. her sandwich was extremely messy and dripped everywhere. The fries were also lacking flavor and I wondered why the server didn't recommend a substitute. The brunch menu is very limited. The bright spot was the "Hamilton" cocktail I ordered on a whim. Perhaps it was an "off" day.
I was here on a Friday night before a concert my first clue should have been that of all the places on OpenTable for that evening this was the easiest to get into for a 5pm sitting. I've been here once before and had a great meal, service was great, and tried some new things on that visit back in April 2016. This time the menu appeared to be really limited with very few entree choices. When I asked the waiter for a recommendation he immediately went for the most expensive item on the menu for the evening, a lobster roll with fries (I passed). I would highly recommend looking at the menu online before coming here and if you see something you're interested in then try it. I tried the squash blossoms stuffed with blue crab. It was outstanding albeit on the small side for an entree. I ended up pairing it with two fish tacos (they were good) and a glass of wine.
Service was just okay. The first person who was assisting me seemed like he didn't care nor want to help me (perhaps it was because I was dining alone and he didn't think I would tip I don't know). Then for some reason he disappeared and another waiter started assisting. He was good. I would say go for the food (the two times I've been here it has been outstanding) and expect mediocre service.
