The Houndstooth Pub Ratings and Reviews
Tried for the first time to meet up with a friend for dinner. The food and drinks were very good - we got their Angus burger and steak tip sandwich on garlic bread - and some happy hour sangrias. I liked the place and service a lot, plus I didn't feel like they were in a rush to get our table back for the next set of people. We were able to take our time, enjoy our food, and catch-up. I would go back again.
Made reservations here for after a show to be close to Penn Station. Reasonably priced good food and drinks. As previously mentioned (and we weren't in a rush) a slow time frame from when order was given to waitress (who was very nice!) to when she brought to table. Place was busy so I'd recommend reservations. All in all good and would return.
This was the worst dinning experience I’ve ever had in the city. I’ve eaten At houndstooth pub before and it was great but last night my friends and I waited for over an hour and still never received our food while tables who ordered and seated after us had received their food. Our waiter kept promising our food was coming and only came to us when we signaled for him. Mind you we all only ordered burgers. I understand a kitchen can get slammed and a lot of people ordering at the same time can get overwhelming but after being there for 1 hour and 20 mins we ended up paying for our drinks and leaving because we never got our food!
Food was great but service was not as good as usual. Maybe an off night but our appetizers and main course was delivered at same time and waiter forgot our drinks until we were able to finally grab him halfway through the meal. The French onion soup is amazing.
Went to Houndstooth Pub with friends specifically because of its Penn Station location. We had a 5pm reservation and we were seated immediately downstairs. Upstairs was very crowded and loud so we were all very happy to sit downstairs which was very quiet. Two of us had the Guinness Babyback ribs, one had chicken and one had salmon. We all enjoyed our meals.
We went for dinner the other night. Originally we were seated upstairs where it was impossible to hear any conversation. Fortunately a table downstairs opened up right away. It was still pretty noisy but less deafening.
The lamb chops were small but really good. My friends ordered the pasta which they thought was just okay. The dessert, a chocolate lava cake, was an enjoyable way to end the meal.
If you want to be able to converse this place would not be my first choice. Perhaps it's quieter on other nights of the week. But the pub fare is of good quality.
I don't normally write reviews but I would have given this restaurant 5 stars if it weren't for the service. We got there at 5:00 on a Saturday. Very empty, waiter came over seemed nice, etc.
Once it got a little busy, I asked and waited over 20 minutes for a refill on a diet coke and water (which was my fault, should have said very little ice) After waiting the 25 minutes, we flagged down a waiter and asked him to please get us the beverages and we had been waiting. We finally got our beverages but I thought our waiter was 50/50. He did however, after telling us he would have to look for candle, get one and we wished my niece a happy birthday. I am not
doing this to get anyone in trouble. I think they need to up their game with more waiters. Felt four wasn't enough as the place filled up pretty quick and they looked like they were overworked.
THE FOOD WAS fabulous! No matter what we ordered, delicious.
Ordered onion rings and artichoke appetizers, Short ribs sandwich and Sweet potato fries!!!
Chicken pot pie and a grilled chicken sandwich with spinach. Dessert decadent, molten lava cake, if you love dark chocolate!!!!! Yummy
It is worth the trip, just prepare yourself on those busy nights to ask the waiter ahead of time
to refill your beverages and check up on you more often.
I made a mistake with the tip and had to call back, Bill issued a credit without hesitation.
A very honorable man.
The restaurant was thoughtful and let the 6 of us just sit and talk before and after lunch.
We will now use the Houndstooth as a local destiny restaurant.
We enjoyed our meal. The food was good. The waitress was very accommodating with a couple of simple requests like no crouton in the onion soup and 2 plates extra plates for starters. We had a couple of starters and the entree was brought before we finished them. Obviously, that's a no-no. I had an Absolut and tonic with lime juice and it had very little flavor and way too much ice. It is lively and noisy so I wouldn't recommend for someone who wanted a romantic, quiet spot. Other than those 2 missteps we liked the restaurant and would return.
It wasn't bad by no means but not anything so special either, my app was good if you like artichoke hearts and my husband had French onion soup which he really enjoyed. Then for dinner he had steak tip sandwich which was fine not great though. I had the burger which was too big and a bit tough. No flavor to the meat itself, it seemed like straight up beef. Nice place as far as the restaurant itself and close to MSG which is why we chose it.
This really isn't a date restaurant and more of a spot to grab a drink after work. One of our meals, the veggie burger, arrived cold. However, the server was quick to fix it and it was quite tasty. The other meal was not. My boyfriend got bangers and mash and the portions were far too small and the quality was comparable to a frozen meal. All in all, a decent happy hour and friendly enough waitstaff but I wouldn't recommend the food to a friend.
Five family members and I ate here prior to seeing my play at a theater around the corner. The staff was welcoming. The space is inviting. I was a bit put off by all tables having bar-high chairs, since I and my aunt have mobility issues. The food was universally praised. The sweet potato fries, pulled pork sandwich, and duck breast salad stood out. Unfortunately, our server disappeared after the food came to the table. That left iced tea and water glasses drained for a long time. We were literally swinging our legs just to do something while we waited for her to return to ask if we wanted the check. No offer of dessert and coffee was made. Not sure they have dessert, but a few of us wanted coffee at least.
Close to Courtyard by Marriott on 37th & 8th. Ave, and great for pre-theater meal without too much hype or pre-fixe cost. Great variety of menu selections. Sitting by window you can people watch the streets of New York. Our waitress Cordelia was efficient, helpful, friendly and good at her job. Food quantity is plentiful and good value for price. Tasty meals. Would return. Only there during daylight when it was not overly busy; don't know about evening dinner/bar scene.
While visiting NYC we took the daughter of an old neighbor out to lunch. This pub was a good location between our hotel and her work. We had an early lunch and it not busy at this time. The service was good and prompt, no issues there. Our food was also good and warm, since it was a rainy day it hit the spot. No complaints on this pub.
We went bc we saw on instagram and Facebook that they were giving 50 % off for fleet week and some of our friends recommended this place to us. The waiter told us we were not eligible since we weren't in uniform. Nothing on Facebook said we had to be in uniform, just show military ID. He did not honor it for us during fleet week and Memorial Day weekend when we visited. Very disappointed they would lure in military this way. Will not return. So many other restaurants had much better deals for active military.
When we got our bill we were charged $19 for gratuity when this was supposed to be for 6 people or more, but there was on two of us, I do not mind tipping but it should be up to me to determine if I had good service and give what amount of tip I think it deserves, very disappointed overall.
Always great burgers and chili ... and the duck salad was delicious! -- We have eaten at the Houndstooth many times and always have good food, and good service. This particular evening, I decided to depart from the usual comfort food that I have had in the past and I tried the salad with grilled duck and figs. It was so yummy and filling! Thanks to the Houndstooth for surprising me with a new go-to dish at their restaurant!
Family get together at the Houndstooth was great. Good pick for some fast, easy bar food with a little Irish bent...BUT, I was surprised at the lack of beer options for an Irish Pub. Sure, they had Guiness, but very little else. Like 6 beers. Anywho, the food was solid, comfort food and decently priced.
Food was very disappointing. My husband had a burger which was very dry. My veggie burger was easily the worst I've every had. Large chucks of it oozed out and dropped to my plate and it had no flavour. We recommend completely avoiding this restaurant. With so much great food at much better prices close by, this restaurant is worth the miss!!!
