The Hollow Ratings and Reviews
The food and the service were truly wonderful. The lamb was perfectly seasoned and cooked @nd the beet and lettuce salad was a great starter. My only complaint was that because it is an old building it is noisy and the noise was compounded by music that was too loud and anything but soothing. Overall, it is wonderful to have this restaurant in Georgetown,Tx
The food was excellent, but we were freezing cold the whole time! I had to keep my jacket on while eating. I don’t know if the heat was broken or just didn’t work well. The chairs were also uncomfortable. They tilted back to far and were not comfortable to eat in.
We had a 6:30 reservation for New Years Eve. We had 6 people in our party. 3 ordered wine and 3 of us ordered beer. We were told they had 3 beer selections for the evening. Pacifico and two others so we ordered Pacifico. By 7:00 when ordering another beer we were told they literally had 3 Pacifico beers left and that was it. Quite disappointing for a big night such as NYE that they ran out 30 minutes after we sat down. They offered two desserts on the prepared NYE menu so while ordering at 7:00 we were told there was no cheesecake as it didn’t “set”. The other option was a chocolate cake of some sort so that’s what you were served. 4 of the 6 of us ordered the teres major of beef for the main dish but all of us said it was under cooked and tough to eat. It was quite a disappointing evening for a special night like NYE. We could have understood the beer issue if it was late but to only offer 3 selections and to run out by 7:00 pm was ridiculous. Our waiter offered us another beer later but he said we only have 2 of them if we wanted to order them. They weren’t Pacifico’s, he just found 2 other beers he could offer. Having just dined at the restaurant in November we had a much different experience hence the reason we made reservations for NYE. It was a disappointing experience and will question if we will go back anytime soon.
My wife and I have been "foodies" for several years and will tell you that we cannot recall dining at a finer gourmet restaurant. Some have been close, but nothing exceeds The Hollow! Our restaurant experiences include locations in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Phoenix, Chicago - all pretty good cities to enjoy excellent food. While the atmosphere is somewhat "industrial" it does not detract from the overall experience.
The barman concocts some very creative drink recipes; the wine selections run the gamut of prices and varietals. All in all, a nice selection.
The dining menu varies from the "usual" to the unexpected and somewhat exotic. Everything was cooked to perfection, delivered promptly to our table either by our waiter or one of the chefs. Very friendly and welcoming experience. This is our second visit, and will be a regular destination as we make the rounds of local eateries.
Happy happy birthday to me! The Hollow is my birthday present every year! With seasonal, local ingredients, I'm always surprised and never disappointed. The best part though is the fact that it's just as wonderful on the random Tuesday all the rest of the year.
Every other time we've eaten here - special occasions a few times a year - we've had a remarkable meal. This time, despite the restaurant not being crowded and nobody in our party of three ordering anything complicated, we waited over an hour for our entrees to arrive. Two of us rated our food as "good", but my coq au vin was terrible - overcooked and lacking in flavor. I doubt that we will return.
Took my friend out for her birthday. We like quiet places so we can talk. The music was a little louder than we prefer, but still quieter than most. The food was excellent and priced well. It's not often you find an affordable place with the ambiance and quality of The Hollow.
The Hollow is beyond fantastic. The smaller dining facility, handcrafted cocktails, extremely courteous staff, but most of all dish after dish that amazes will keep us coming back anytime we are in the area. The last time we were in I forgot my leftovers and the staff actually called me and brought the food out to my car. Completely unnecessary, but just goes to show how attentive the staff is. Highly recommended, not one bad thing to say.
I was hoping to enjoy The Hollow based on the reviews but it was an utter disappointment. The Hollow wants to give the impression of a high end restaurant but they simply don't deliver. The first issue was the menu, we received two different menus which differed from the online menu as well. The waiter didn't know the menu or how anything was prepared which required him to ask the chef when we asked a couple of questions. At no point did I see a manager or someone that appeared to be in charge. No one asked our opinion of the meal or experience. Overall I would rate the night and The Hollow a D at best.
At the time of our reservation there was a large party upstairs which seemed to pull a lot of resources. Our water glasses were always empty and they use old wine bottles to pour the water. We asked them to leave one on our table, but were told they couldn't because they didn't have enough to use. Entree served with a pureed starch only - veggies purchase separately. When entree description says salmon with sweet potatoes puree and Brussel sprouts, it was literally 3 Brussels sprouts leaves. The food was prepared wonderfully, the chef is very talented. I would like to see this place be successful. A good front end manager could make this happen.
So I know that most Georgetown residents are excited about the change to The Hollow's dining concept. Unfortunately, I just can't agree. Their lunch menu was lackluster, and, honestly, I could only find one thing on it that interested me: the shrimp risotto. Very disappointed in a strange, under-seasoned dish. I prefer the former menu as it was unique in this quaint town. Now The Hollow is just like every other restaurant in Georgetown
I thought the dumplings were a little heavy and too salty. My husband had the pork schnitzel and the cabbage was way too salty. Better to undersalt than oversalt; however, there was no salt or pepper on the table and pepper was not offered. Our lady server was outstanding!
The Hollow is our favorite restaurant in Georgetown. The menu changes often which makes it very interesting. No
matter which dish we choose, we are always pleased - food is excellent! I cannot say enough good things about the chef. He is creative with the menu - it's not just the usual run-of-the-mill choices.
We have had other fantastic meals at The Hollow but unfortunately, this last visit wasn't great. We were seated upstairs in a dark corner where it was also quite warm. It took us over an hour to get our appetizers, the service was very slow, and we had to keep asking for water. For some reason that we didn't quite understand, they will only cook a burger well done. The food this time was just okay although the dessert was a highlight--apple pastry with bacon ice cream.
Although the food was flavorful, I was disappointed that my huevos rancheros with chorizo was sadly lacking in chorizo. While I did't expect large amounts of meat in my dish, I do expect more than teeny tiny morsels of chorizo. I had to really inspect the bean mixture to see the chorizo.
The service was terrible. We had to ask for our side of bacon. We had to ask for refills on our coffee. And we never got a refill of our water glasses. I ended up having to drink my husbands water. There just wasn't anyone to flag down to ask for more water. I've eaten here many times before and I'm hoping this lack of service was a one time deal.
FOOD WAS GOOD....WHEN IT CAME TO PAYING WAITRESS SAID MY AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD WAS TURNED DOWN...........THEN MY DISCOVER CARD WAS DENIED. SO I PAID IN CASH. i CALLED BACK THAT NIGHT TWICE FOR A RETURNED PHONE CALL TO LET YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH CARD VERIFICATION SYSTEM. I IMMEDIATED CALLED AMERICAN EXPRESS AND DISCOVER SAID THAT CREDIT WAS GREAT AND THEY HAD NO REQUEST FROM YOUR RESTAURANT. IF I CANT GET A RETURNED PHONE CALL AND RESPONSE I WONT BE BACK NOR WILL I REFER CUSTOMERS TO YOU. IT WAS VERY EMBARRASSING AS IT WAS MY GIRLFRIENDS BIRTHDAY. SHE LIVES IN SUN CITY...........NOT GOT TO REFER YOU PLACE EITHER. POOR MANAGEMENT ................MIKE BROCK
We had an out of town guest and we're excited to visit the Hollow after it's do-over. Our waitress was very friendly, the "new" artisan cocktails we're very yummy, and, the salads were more than ample and very good. We were off to a great start. Then, our entrees arrived... our friend had the chicken under a brick - looked beautiful, was a very large portion, unfortunately, it wasn't cooked through. (Nothing worse than raw chicken). At this point things went down hill! Our waitress got busy with other tables and didn't come to check on us for some time, so we couldn't alert her to the chicken. When she did make it back to the table, she said she would have the chicken "fixed" soon. We didn't see her, or the chicken, for another 20 minutes. When questioned, she assured my husband that it should be right out. He asked to speak to the manager who saundered over already sporting an attitude. His response to the time factor was that, "the kitchen is very busy." If I hadn't offered to share my dinner with my friend, she wouldn't have eaten that evening. Very disappointing, especially on the part of the manager. We like to support our local restaurants, but not certain we can feel comfortable to return to The Hollow. (Yes, they did comp the chicken).
Chef Jacob keeps amazing me with his creations and great wine selection. If you like duck you won't be disappointed Chef Jacob's unique way to create his dish is the reason why we keep coming back. Menu is reasonably priced and the staff is always courteous and knowledgeable. Definitely one of our favorite restaurants in the WORLD!
