The Highwood Ratings and Reviews
I have been going to the Highwood Dining room for many years, and especially friend's brithdays. This time I was disappointed in the main dishes. I appreciate the effort the students have placed in providing this Christmas luncheon. The majority of the dishes were cold. The soups were hot, and the special cranberry-apple pudding was delightful. I will return again, but if the main dishes are cold, I have other options. In summary, we have always enjoyed the quality of food served over 15 years and we especially enjoy talking to the students. I do hope they review the surveys. Happy Holidays to all and enjoy the break to be with friends and family
3 of us enjoyed lunch at the Highwood complete with a delicious bottle of red wine at a reasonable price. 2 of us ordered the special which was tenderloin with lovely vegetables, potato puree, gravy. We couldn't eat all ours - portion was generous. The other ordered steak sandwich with roasted potato wedges and she cleaned her plate. We shared and enjoyed the brownie dessert and each had a coffee. Our server was attentive and eager to please. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a meal anytime, always a treat!
The food presentation was great and the taste was amazing as well, combination of flavours was good and the students were enthusiastic in their service the drinks were fantastic and I think everything over all was an excellent experience I would love going back and the prices are good
It's a teaching venue for SAIT students who are keen and energetic. Allowance for inexperience of waitstaff is necessary. There was an opportunity for comment directly to teaching staff when one instructor stopped by to ask how we enjoyed the meal. The 5 course dinner was well presented and tasty.
Excellent choice for a business meeting or getting together with family and friends! We had the lunch buffet with so many choices it was difficult to choose. We all enjoyed our meal choices! The students did a great job informing us of all the ingredients in each dish and which sauces would go best with the selections we picked! I would recommend the Highwood for any occasion!
I was a little disappointed as I thought that there would be more of a traditional Christmas theme selection of main courses. Specifically, honey ham, turkey, sccallop potatoes, cranberry/orange fusion compote, etc.
Also feel that there is a slight urgency to bring the luncheon buffett to a quick end as items tend to be slowly pulled from the tables. Makes for a rushed instead of relaxing outing.
I'm all for trying different combinations of traditional foods but there seems to be a greater slant to fusion and/or vegan dishes which really don't appeal to my palette. Please think about bringing back some of the "comfort foods" of the past that still can be updated to today's low calorie diets.
Temporary entrance was well marked but no one there to check us in so we wandered thru restaurant with our coats/ hats and mittens. Confusion with lack of menus when we had reserved a table for four.
Butternut soup was unusually bland. Ham hock appy excellent.
Good food presentations and usually a good resto. This is a teaching facility so spotty service is to be expected from time to time.
We have a small company, and the Highwood is perfect for our annual Christmas dinner. The food is outstanding, and gets better every year. Every dish was a work of art, and absolutely delicious. We love the dessert buffet; there were lots of options for everyone, despite any allergies and food intolerances. The service could use some improvement. We had to ask several times to have water glasses refilled. When the food arrived, it was apparently placed in front of the wrong person, and dishes were moved several times. The wine was not very equitably distributed. However, overall it was a lovely experience that everyone enjoyed.
It was an Anniversary dinner for my wife and I and we were not to be disappointed.
We were so impressed with the students, the service and the food was amazingly good - Five Star standard! Beautiful and meticulously prepared and presented, each course was a delight.
From start to finish, it was faultless and we had a lovely evening.
Do not miss the opportunity of Fine Dining at such a reasonable price.
A huge "Thank You" to all the SAIT students and staff ... Job well done!
We shall return.

I didn't like my meal. Steak sandwich was underseasoned, ice cold and so chewy. Had steak sandwich at Cash Casino was much better steak sandwich for simular price. My friend had same and didn't like it either. Out of 5 people only 1 liked her meal. I will not pay 8.00 for parking to eat there.
OPEN TABLE - we want to see who has confirmed they are coming when invited through Open Table.
Everyone is still raving about the dinner days later! Table loved the tomato salad & appetizers of cheese fritters. Had to ask for another basket of assorted bread as everyone sampled all the different types. One used the bread to soak up the rest of their duck consume. Main entrees of sirloin, pork, fish, & gnocchi were all appreciatively devoured. There was a delicious buffet of desserts to choose from. Service was professional & friendly.
Note: Building is being renovated so there is a temporary entrance with no elevator.
It was the first time we dined at the Highwood and wonder why we waited so long. The food was delicious from start to finish; the presentation exceptional. Our waiter, Andrew, was attentive, engaging, professional and friendly. The entire staff made us feel very welcome. It was an amazing experience! Kudos!!!
This is a cooking school. It was the server’s first day but he did very well. Cod was again fresh. Poke bowl was great as usual. Blackened shrimp was great value. Great value. The good price helps. Nice to see good food from a cooking school. Better than certain real restaurants. They must have great chefs as teachers.
My friend and I love the Highwood. It is our most favourite place to have a wonderful lunch.
We were a little disappointed in our waiter Alexander. He was kind and pleasant however could use a little more instruction with service. We did have to remind him 3 times to bring our bread. Having said that he seemed a little nervous but with time I am sure he will be fine.
We Will of course return.
This the fourth or fifth time we dined at the Highwood. It’s the first time we’ve had a meal that wasn’t exceptional. My husband’s steak was a little on the well done side, but still eatable. We’ve had Jarod(Jerry) as our waiter everytime we’ve been there and look forward to seeing him each year. He is a great example of a professional and knows how to look the customer. We look forward to returning next year to celebrate
This is our third time, I believe, having dinner here in the past 10+ years. Food was good and beautiful presentation as usual. Good service. Having full course fine dining here is always a good deal and it’s always a good opportunity for the students to learn and practice. Salad was fresh, pretty but portion is a bit too small. Pecorino Romano Parisienne Gnocchi was really so-so. Gnocchi wasn’t chewy, probably it’s my own personal preference. The first gnocchi I had (in a small Italian family restaurant at Notting Hill of London UK) gave me a lovely chewy texture and I still miss that (too bad the restaurant was closed down now). Roasted Lingcod was fresh and portion was quite huge. Albacore Tuna Dsuke was fresh, good seared tuna Tataki. Warm Ham Hock Rillette taste like Spam but wasn’t that salty. This is an interesting good item. Duck Breast & Duck Leg Dumpling – dumpling was a fusion made, not authentic Chinese one. Duck break was a quite tough (medium well), compared to the ones I had in Girona (Spain) or Paris. Not sure why, probably either the origin of the duck or the way it was cooked? I gave my feedback to the server and he was happy to feed that back to the chef. Dessert was available as buffet and I like they were all made in small portion so we could try out different stuff. Overall, the food was light, not over-salted or sweetened (we do like that). It’s always a good experience having dinner here and support the local students.
