Reservations a must! Drinks are on the expensive side, and an exactly measured pour. Appetizer and dinner was great. The steak we ordered was overcooked, the waitress removed it and brought a correctly cooked replacement in a timely manner. The chef ask us to accept a dessert on the house for the inconvenience. We accepted and tried the bread pudding - yummy! Full tummy, Nice!
Always have a great time at The High Spot! Love the ambiance, beer/wine choices.
My main suggestion is they need to offer at least one vegetarian option.
The manager was kind enough to help me create a yummy dinner, but every item on the menu had some sort of meat included....
I didn't want just a side salad for my dinner.
Despite this, my food was great and we will definitely go back!
This is one of the downtown restaurant. It has the bar and dining table. It has the happy hour price, which is very reasonable for the burger. We had burger, not bad for $7, but not as good as McCormick, Ruth Chris, or Morton's happy hour burger. But much better than the fast food burgers. I had cream crab soup, very rich. Just try to not pay attention to the calories. As the bar is in the dining hall, so it was not very quiet place. Overall, happy hour price is good. Food is not bad.
First time here, chosen based on great reviews. Did not disappoint! Hillary our server was great, personality and efficiency. Started with pickles, which were perfectly fried, not greasy at all (spears vs chips if you have preference) however, one of the sauces served with was so salty inedible, thankfully they didn't need sauce. Potatas bravas also good, not greasy, but lacked seasoning of any kind. Entrees: chicken & waffles GREAT, smoked mac & cheese GREAT AND HUGE, Filet & poutine GREAT, Puruvian chicken was just OK, again too salty with not much other flavor going on. Dessert: bread pudding, different, more like french toast, but GREAT flavor, chocolate mousse GREAT, cookie "bomb" was just that, a bomb, not GOOD. Cookie was hard & crumbly, served room temp not warm. Overall we loved it, decent wine/beers, interesting cocktails. Cute atmosphere. Would definitely go again.
While the food was very good, the service was a bit uneven with delays getting some drinks, and the bill brought before one of the desserts arrived. The noise level inside was horrible. It became impossible to hear each other without screaming. It's too bad because I really wanted to like High Spot. Love the food, hated the noise level.
Went with our middle school aged kids for dinner at a friend's recommendation. It has a nice casual atmosphere.
We ordered 3 appetizers (General Tso cauliflower, baked brie and fried green tomatoes with crab) & they were all wonderful. My kids were wary of the cauliflower replacing chicken but they agreed that it tasted awesome.
I wish I could say the same for our dinners. I got the chicken and waffles. The breading on the chicken was salty and the waffles were thin and crispy. Shrimp and rice with pimento cheese was too cheesy. The flavor combination was fine but the amount of cheese overpowered the rice. The shrimp tasted good.
Eaten here often over the years but food seems to be slipping. Menu items hardly ever change, food and presentation are ok but nothing special. All entrees were fine but nothing I would call notable, had trouble making a selection based on limited choices, we ended up with the daily specials which we enjoyed but did not find a single dish deserving of a rave. Dined on a Thursday evening and restaurant was about 1/2 full but still noisy; on weekends it must be very loud. Will dine again mainly due to convenient location but looking for a bit more imagination from High Spot in the future.
Overall just an average meal and service. We were expecting much better based on reviews. The Soft Shell special tauted as a Whale was average size and was not piping hot when served as one would expect. However, taste was very good and the crab was fresh. Service was average and the server seemed nervous and somewhat overwhelmed despite what i would consider a normal looking crowd for a Saturday night.
After reading numerous online reviews for dinner restaurants in the Cambridge area, we decided to give "The High Spot" a try. Monday night is typically a slow night, so we had no trouble getting a table and parking was plentiful (on the street). The dining room is tastefully decorated and room lighting is on the low side. My husband and I both had the "house salad" (known as the 305 High) which was very generously sized (at $8 each). He tried an ale on draft which he does not recall the name of, but it was very good, and so he had 2. I tried the Blueberry Lemonade, which tasted like cough syrup (but improved after a few minutes of mixing and ice melt). For entree I had the Lump Crab cake which came with "curried corn and black bean salsa". Crab cake was ok, but the rest (corn and beans) was rather bland and dry (so disappointing!). I would like to recommend putting the Crab cake over saffron rice and garnishing it with roasted red peppers and sun dried tomatoes. Another possibility would be to pair it with potatoes au gratin and asparagus (or steamed green beans). My husband chose the filet mignon which came with a deep fried potato pancake and sautéed kale. He thought it was good. Overall it was a pleasant experience, and our server was excellent!
The soft shells were delicious! They were flash fried a beautiful brown to a gentle crisp. My husband had tuna poke which he said was delicious with raw tuna, rice, and cucumber formed into a cake-like shape and presented with sauces drizzled around the plate.
We had delicious food at the High Spot, including the best soft-shell crabs I've ever had. I guess it really is true that they're better in Maryland... The wine list is just ok but my hubby gave the many beers on tap two thumbs-up. The kale salad is delicious as is the crab soup - my hubby called it the best crab bisque he has ever had (again, kudos to the state of Maryland.) Friendly atmosphere and a menu that belies the casual decor.
We had reservations for 3 and were seated promptly. Our server did not get to us for 15 minutes, despiete others seated after us gettingattention, drinks etc. Poor service plagued the night and out server was often nowhere to be found or chatting outside. We stopped in to this area on our way through the Eastern Shore, but our dinner took an hour and a half despite it being quite simple; salad, soup of the day, an appetitzer and a fish dish. they did seem to have a good business, but we ate at a late hour when there were vacant tables and still spent more time waiting than eating.
Our family of 4 (2 adults, 1 teen, 1 tween) had a great dinner here while in Cambridge for the weekend. Great casual and tasty menu options -good for all the ages of our group. Pleasant friendly & relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely come again if we are in the area again.
We had high expectations for this restaurant but were mostly disappointed by the service. Staff were working hard, but they did not appear to be well-trained. We had a reservation, but had to wait for our table. When we got to our table, there were dirty dishes left on the table and no silverware/napkins had been set. It was a bit of a wait to give our order, and again when served my beer, I was brought a dirty beer glass and had to ask several wait staff before getting a clean one. My husband ordered the pork chop special, and it was quite good. Plenty of food and well prepared. We both had the crab soup, which was delicious. I ordered the filet entree and asked that it be cooked to "pink" inside. It was served with no "pink" at all. That was a disappointment. So while this restaurant has huge potential, it was disappointing the night we ate there.
The food was only ok. The menu sounds great, but unfortunately the execution falls a bit short. The two biggest points of feedback are that sadly all of the food is under seasoned (a crime with a nice pork chop and Kobe beef). The mashed potatoes were also underseasoned with some raw potatoes mixed in. This brings me to my next point which is the inconsistency of how the food is cooked. The pork chop was ordered medium and was overcooked. Two of three burgers were well done while only one came medium rare as asked. The fries also undercooked. Season and cook with consistency!
