The High Spot

The restaurant was closed and out of business. The owner also closed another location.
My wife and some friends arrived right on time for her reservation after a long drive from DC only to find the restaurant closed and dark. No explanation was posted. They were well within the posted hours of operation. They waited for a while, then gave up and went to another place to eat. Hugely disappointing!
We had a nice valentines dinner just after the crush of diners. The waiter was very friendly and competent and we had a special with shrimp and avocado that was outstanding. The restaurant was relatively quiet, and as always, clean and well maintained.
We looked forward to returning to the High Spot but we were disappointed with menu items that were unavailable or being told “we don’t have any of that”. My wife’s entree was supposed to come with broccoli and didn’t and when she said to the server “I think this was supposed to have broccoli”. He replied with “we’re out of that” and didn’t offer anything in it’s place. Trivial but having to ask if they had any other vegetables seemed strange.
I would recommend The High Spot to a friend...relectantly. And I would tell that friend to stick to the very basics: a burger or...a different kind of burger. I have been here once, and I would go again but I would try a burger before ever venturing on again to something that required more skill. My date and I ordered the General Tso's cauliflower appetizer and odd as that sounds, it was the highligh of the meal. That said, the bar was pretty low. This unusual appetizer was actualy pretty well done and very tasty. Speaking of well done...this is where the real trouble starts. My date and I both ordered the iceberg wedge salad with filet mignon: medium rare. The steak was oddly pre-cut into bite-sized pieces. I found this a bit surprising, but it would have been ok, I guess, if those bite-sized pieces had not been beyond well done. When I say well done, I mean not a hint of pin. Hard. Dry. The steak was well done in the same way the dry dog food I give my dog every day is well done. It was really, really well done. :)
We did not send back our food or complain, therefore we did not give THS a chance to make it better. It was a long day and we were tired and just wanted to go home. Maybe given another shot they could've re-done our kibbles so they were a little closer to what we would have recognized as human food. Service was great. Ambiance was nice for a small town restaurant. As I said, I'll try again. But next time, I'll have to play it much safer. Burgers can be overcooked also, but I'm an optimist...
Everything we had was delicious and the staff were great. Great beer and wine list too, and the house cocktails were excellent.
The night we were there, they were out of all beef entrees as well as the salmon. One of my guests got fish and chips and there was a long, black hair in the fish. I got the duck with pasta. That was not very good; consisted of 4 small, dry slices of duck breast and a gluey gouda cheese sauce.
The buffalo oysters were good. I hope that this was just an off night because I usually have a nice meal there.
Have been disappointed the last two times I went to the High Spot. It seems to take awhile for the restaurant to recognize that you have sat down and to come to serve you. Neither time the restaurant was busy. The food has just been mediocre.
Steadily declining service and food quality. I used to consider this my “go to” place.
Perfect ending after watching the Christmas parade! Love that reservations are possible!
If you are in the Cambridge area you have to visit the High Spot. I normally dine at Stoked when I visit but im so happy to have found this restaurant. The food and drinks were amazing and the craft cocktails were good as well. Some of is in the group returned the next day for dinner again!
Had a reservation but they took 20 minutes to seat us. They offered a free appetizer due to the delay, but then included it on the bill. Soup was cold and had to be sent back to be heated. Entrees were OK. We ordered a dessert, but then they were out of it, and it was still included on the bill. We let them know and the bill was corrected. The manager was apologetic and they gave us a 20% discount off entire bill. Nice gesture but the entire night was awkward. Unfortunately I don't think we'll be coming back. It had been an annual tradition for many years but we'll be looking for a new place in Cambridge.
We usually love The High Spot. This has been one of our go-to places in Cambridge. Usually our meal is excellent. This past weekend, however, we were disappointed. For one, the menu seems to have changed and the restaurant stopped making our favorite Brussels sprouts appetizer and took some of our other favorites off the menu. We were disappointed and we hope they'll add some back. Our drinks were excellent. Our baked brie appetizer was great too, but the nachos my children ordered were on the skimpy side. I ordered the smoked chicken tacos for my entree; the flavor was good but I had to pull an almost two inch chicken bone out of my mouth while eating. I showed it to our nice waitress who apologized. My kids said their burgers were "ok". My husband's pork tacos were bland. This may have just been an off night because it was Thanksgiving weekend. We like the ambience and the waitstaff is generally very friendly and helpful. We'll be back again and hope for better next time.
Alonzo, our server, gave us great recommendations. The food was delicious
They were out of the Shepherd's pie and had no mushrooms for the duck fat burger.
No problem getting seating for 4 adults at 6pm on a Nov Sat night, although it did fill up. Pleasant, attentive wait staff. A bit noisy from the bar area from time to time, but not too bad. Cream of crab soup was excellent, more of a bisque, not thick/gloppy, with great flavor. Smoked chicken tacos were quite good. Also very good: grilled romaine, chorizo & sweet potato hash, warm broccoli salad, bread pudding dessert. Aside from the huge dessert, portions were good without the need for take-home containers. Prices were towards our upper end but were reasonable for flavor, amount and presentation. I'd go back.
We have been going to the High Spot when ever we are in Cambridge for the past few years. I can't remember a time when the food and the service were anything less than great. The restaurant is clean and cozy and very nicely appointed. I highly recommend the High Spot.
I requested a table in the bar area but wasnt seated there or even acknowledged. Service was slow, although we were offered a free drink for compensation. Fish taco was sparse! Small pieces of fish and some greens, so they were 1/2 filled tacos. A sauce was only supplied after I asked. The food is usually good, so we'll assume it was a bad night.
The food was ok and the service was not very attentive. We had fun but I probably wouldn’t go back.
Nice dinner w my family. Good kids menu.
Great meal, as usual. My friend got the salmon and loved it. I got the fish tacos...they were excellent. My sister once again got the crab cake picnic platter. The crab cake was a little on the small side, but good. The desserts were outstanding, particularly the strawberry shortcake. The waffle was outstanding!
Wanted a casual but good meal that didn't mean only seafood after a cycling event in the area. The service was very helpful and recommended the custom burger with a duck egg on top that hit the spot. Local craft beers are available and a range of moderately priced filling entrees. A welcome addition to the dining scene in Cambridge.
Great place. They try hard and do a great job for a small town place
Good food and good service right in the heart of Cambridge. Enjoyed our outdoor seats
Our waitress was rude. Took her forever to come greet up and take our drink order. She would come by and leave before we could order our food. She also came to take our order and while we were talking she said “I’ll be back I have other tables to take care of.” Her attitude was extremely rude and would never go back.
Excellent service, food, and location. I definitely would return to try other dishes.
Hats off to you all for your unique, creative dishes. I’ll return again and again. Wonderful smoked turkey.
If I had any criticism, I guess it would be the noise level could be stifled a bit more and the crab cake could be a little less salty.
But over all, great job!
Fantastic menu. Had the crab cake and the fish of the day, both were wonderful. Service was attentive but unobtrusive.
Early dinner with friends. Unusual menu items. Large portions. Fun cocktails.
Outstanding food and attentive but unobtrusive service.
Cute place, quaint, great food, great service. On vacation, but if local would definitely return.
Creative local cooking. Nothing fancy But solid tasty chow. Trio of deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes not to be missed
We heard good reviews about this restaurant, so on a family trip to Cambridge for a local event we made reservations for The High Spot. When we first arrived and we were seated, we waited for about 20 minutes for a server in which we had to ask for if we had a server to be assigned one. We ordered our drinks, apps, and dinner all at the same time. After waiting for the main course, our server stated that the kitchen was backed up and the food would be out shortly, 30 minutes later food did not arrive yet. We are about 1hr 30 mins into our reservation without our meal. Spoke to management at which that point we decided cancel dinner since our meal had not arrived yet, in which the manager comp'd our drinks and soup.
Great food, especially the fish n chips.
A pleasant surprise in Cambridge. Nicely appointed bistro with an interesting and diverse menu for lunch. Nice light atmosphere with well-prepared food. Will go again maybe for dinner next time!
We were a group of 10. Service was very good. Food and drink were excellent.
Delicious unique cuisine with local flair. Options for all tastes and ages.
The food was generally okay but the service was horrible! Will never go back.
This was my 4th visit to the High Spot and the food was equally as delicious this time as all the others. Great seafood, burgers and excellent appetizers! Best food in Cambridge!
Very good food. Excellent service. Nice choice of beer. Recommend it.
