The food they have in stock is delicious - the problem is that both times we visited on a holiday weekend - they were out of several items on the menu - at a dinner they were out of two of the main entrees and one of the appetizers, the bottle of wine we ordered -and somehow - olives (for martinis). At breakfast they were out of eggs benedict and sausage and were out of coffee - which took 10 minutes to brew a new batch. It is mind boggling that on a holiday weekend when they knew they would be busy - they were out of these.
This was a true find in the area. The inn is a beautifully redone old home. There is a bar area that looked like a lot of fun and was very busy the night we were there. We ate in the main dining room which was much quieter and suited our family. The food was wonderful and large portions. I highly suggest the cheese plate!
We have been having Christmas dinner at the Hermitage for 30 years. Since the new owner took over we have seen a gradual decline in food and service. This year was awful!
Firstly when you walk in it used to be filled with Christmas decorations. No more. It could have been June it would look the same. They seated a party without a reservation at our reserved table and then told us we had to wait so they could spread out the pace of orders coming into the kitchen.
Once we were seated we waited a good amount of time for our server to make herself known. Finally we ordered. When the first course came out it was served to the wrong people at our table. We passed the food so everyone got what they ordered Second course was handled the same way.
The food was terrible. My chicken was over cooked and dried out. My wife’s was over salted and inedible. The wine list was very weak. My sons first choice of entree was not available. We had a 7 PM reservation.
Congratulations Hermitage, this was definitely our worst meal of 2017 AND you have destroyed what used to be a really nice tradition of spending Christmas dinner with you.
It’s very sad what has happened to this restaurant.
Food was very mediocre. My wife and I had the Noodle soup , she with shrimp my self with chicken Had zero flavor in need of some salt . They added chairs in the bar area that whole cozy not meant for dining, I sunk so far in the chair that my dish was level with my face . This was a favorite but not sure I would return
The Hermitage is a restaurant I have frequented since a child. Our second home was in Vermont and my parents used to love this restaurant. The restaurant holds a special place in my memory. I took my boyfriend to The Hermitage on a Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary and I hyped up the restaurant to what I remember of it from years past. It's definitely under new management & ownership. Our server was fantastic but the rest of the staff was disconnected. The duck is why I wanted to go back but it didn't hold up to it's past recipe or what I remember it being. The crispy pork belly was great. My boyfriends spare ribs were great too. Cozy atmosphere but, I think it's lost it's charm and character.

This property has gone downhill dramatically over the last year as the menu became more complex, over priced and less approachable. What used to be one of the crown jewels West Dover dining, is now an also-ran exhibiting the effects of horrendous mismanagement.
I have been to this restaurant in the past and it has a famous well-known wine listing. It is set in a beautiful inn set on a beautiful well-known property in the area. In the past, it was an independent inn and restaurant but has become part of a membership club resort but outsiders are still welcome to make reservations. Since becoming part of a club the restaurant has changed and looks more like a clubhouse than the original quaint inn/restaurant which it was. The service is excellent but the atmosphere is now more family oriented. The food attempts to be haute cuisine but is average at best. It used to serve an excellent pheasant which was locally raised but this was no longer on the menu and has been replaced by more fancy but less tasteful entrees. I had the duck which came pre-sliced and seared with a fairly raw center which was unlike the less fancy typically fatty crispy duck on the bone which I favor. It should go back to the local basics.
We dined at the Hermitage over 30 years ago, and recalled a very special evening. This experience was a real let down, with chaotic service, poorly conceived and executed dishes, incompetent wait staff, high prices, and an overflowing bar crowd at the entrance to the dining room. Our waitress Sarah, did the best she could, but the rest of the team were almost comically inept. At a nearby table, someone dropped most of a plate of food on the carpet and no one picked it up, and the waitstaff just trampled all over it all night long. The sommelier recommended several fish dishes which were not available on the menu. The white wine was not chilled, and they ran out of any sauvignon blanc. Need I say more? It is actually painful to recall the experience.
For appetizers we ordered the fish tacos, excellent, a flatbread - also excellent and a dozen oysters - very good. For main dishes we had the salmon, skate, duck and the young chicken- all were very very good. We will be back there soon to enjoy another wonderful meal!
My husband and I were the only patrons. I ordered the rib-eye rare and it was more medium rare and it was not a rib-eye. The steak was more like a NY strip - when I said something to the waiter he looked at me like I was crazy. The steak was served with french fries and felt it should have been accompanied by another type of potato or vegetable.
My family went for dinner there a few days ago. We were a group of 6 including 3 kids ranging from <1 year to 9 years old. The staff was friendly and accommodating toward us. The food was pricey but delicious, as was the wine and cocktails. It was our last dinner out during our mini vacation and the restaurant was fitting for a celebration. Adults shared two appetizers and 2 entrees (the entrees left a bigger impression - trout and venison). Overall, a great experience.
One of the worst meals I have ever experienced. Our order was never submitted and after an hour I finally asked the supervisor, the one who actually took our order after the waitress failed to do so. He had nothing but excuses. When I told him to skip the 1st course they brought it anyway and of course charged us as well. We did not receive our meal until 1hr and 45 minutes after we arrived. They did not offer any apologies and not even a cocktail on the house. Evidently they have not heard that amateur hour is over. In my opinion, The Hermitage service and food has gone steadily downhill the last few years. That will be my last visit ever. I will not miss it in its current form.
While the food was good the menu choices were very limited. The wine list was extremely short and didn't have great choices. First wine send back and the second white wine was served at room temperature. Hopefully the restaurant will improve because the location and decor is beautiful.
We love coming here as there is music also to accompany your dinner. My husband had a burger which was delicious. I had fish which was fresh and presented well. It was a quick dinner out. My only suggestion would be to change the tavern menu seasonly or offer some specials. The selections are limited. More pub food items would be great.
The formal dining room is very elegant. The server was very attentive to our needs but did not rush us. The food was well presented and delicious but a bit overpriced for the portion size. Went back again and ate in the bistro. Again the food was very good but the service was slow even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. We sat at a table by the bar and it was a bit noisy. Our server smelled like cigarettes.
Overall the Hermitage Inn in West Dover, Vermont, would be a place we'd frequent if it were easier to find the first time. Because of road construction and insufficient signage we had to drive miles out of our way and ask for directions more than once. Our arrival at the Inn was further spoiled by hitting a giant pothole in the unpaved entrance to the parking lot. However, once we had arrived at the restaurant, the food and the service in the busy pub were quite good, made even better by the local musicians who played and sang Fleetwood Mac songs.
We were a group of eight. We came early because we had a concert to attend. The service was excellent, attentive without being intrusive. The food varied between excellent and good, with our only real complaint that two of our party had only appetizers because we had a late lunch and they wished they had ordered an entree. It was a gorgeously beautiful view with spectacular well maintained grounds. We liked it and will return!
We stayed at the Hermitage Inn and dined at the restaurant at the Inn, sometimes called the Hermitage Inn but also sometimes called Nonna. They are in transition as Hermitage bought the Inn recently. The Inn needs lots of work with the rooms, the common area and the service, but the restaurant was surprisingly good. Real homemade pastas, well done sauces, fresh vegetables not overcooked, high quality meats and seafood, all done very nicely. We had breakfast there the next morning and everything was equally as good. So if you are staying in the area, stay someplace else, but eat there.
We arrived at the restaurant on a lovely summer evening for outdoor dining, except it just started to rain. We ate in the pub section with the pub menu. We had a delicious salad of shaved vegetables with a light and delicate dressing. I had a wonderful trout dinner while my husband had a fabulous burger, a great selection. The inn has a warm and charming atmosphere with a friendly staff. It was an enjoyable evening. We will definitely return.
We arrived to the Handle road restaurant with a reservation for brunch. The staff told us that they did not do brunch there and directed us to the club house. Upon arriving at the club house, we found the entire place empty, and the brunch barely set up even though we arrived at 10:15 (the time was listed as 10-3). Alex, one of the servers, told us he had no idea why the staff at the other location sent us there, since we were not members nor staying at the inn and that the other location could have served us just as well. Despite this, he was very welcoming and offered us to stay as long as we wanted, taking very good care of us the entire time. The food was great, just wished there were more options, and just a strange overall experience. Probably won't be going back. We were very appreciative of the service from Alex though.
The Hermitage is known as one of the better restaurants in the MtSnow vicinity. The Dining Rm is a little dated. Good was good. Venison was delicious. Price was right. Very professional staff. The bar area also serves dinner...recently renovated and a lot livelier!
We have wanted to dine here for years and we were definitely impressed with the whole experience. We were celebrating our 44th anniversary which we used to do at the White House Inn and this was by far better. The food was delicious and the service was great. The ambiance was about as good as it gets. This has to be the classiest restaurant in VT. we have seen to date. Will definitely return at the earliest possible time. Ou compliments to the staff and the owner for a job well done.
The good thing about the Hermitage Inn restaurant was that we could make a last minute reservation for the New Year Eve. The surprise was to find out the only option available was the tasting menu, which was forced on all of us while we wouldn't order so much food. The food itself was good, and perhaps the price was not too excessive (over 1K bill for the party of two parents with two small children) given the timing.
