About The Heritage Restaurant
The Heritage is one of the many classroom/laboratory facilities operated by the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College. The restaurant is staffed by students in the culinary programs and is under the direct supervision of Chef and Dining Room Professors.
During lunch, your meal will be prepared and served by first year students. The meals represent International Cuisine with modern and classical touches. In the evening, The Heritage reopens to feature a relaxed atmosphere, more Continental Cuisine, and our second year students will serve and prepare your meal.
The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education restaurants and kitchens are classroom settings. We take pride in them. Our students prepare our meals daily with the finest seasonally available ingredients including freshly baked artisan bread.

The Heritage Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This was our first time here. We’ve been wanting to try this place out for over a year. We were there celebrating our anniversary and my mother’s birthday. The food was really good. A couple of mishaps (steak being over cooked and running out of some desserts) but they were able to resolve those things. We can’t say enough about the outstanding service and we had a wonderful time as well. We will certainly be coming back.
Everyone we interacted with was so real....down to earth and informative on their careers and ambitions. The mid length blonde manager was SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!!! Her customer focus was rich, her communication and followup were clear, genuine and thorough. She made us feel like family. Loved loved the learning atmosphere and the (minor)mistakes and slightly nervous moments. I believe it, made us feel comfortable and human. While upscale, it was not stuffy or too starchy formal....it was a delight to be with my wife in your establishment. Thank you thank you. Anthony and Jill
Price Fixe Dinner Venue ( Amuse-Bouche, first course, main course and dessert)
Excellent and uniquely varied selections for all courses; staff was attentive and enjoyable; all food preparation was of highest quality and presentation.
A limited by very adequate wine selection.
The venue was very comfortable with an enjoyable view of the city in a very quiet atmosphere.
What a refreshing change to gourmet dining. Students are learning but well trained and attentive. Food is artfully presented and delicious. Pour over coffee a special treat and desserts are a must have!!! Don’t miss this rare gem of a dining experience for lunch or dinner
It is my pleasure to introduce The Heritage to those who have heard about it, but never had the opportunity to experience such a wonderful culinary experience. I am looking forward to two more group visits in January and February. Thank you Dan for the lovely table and thank your team for a delicious journey.
This is a teaching school so this is understanable. Our waiter was extremely nervous and made several errors with the drinks. Our table was right where the staff all stand while waiting to go back out on the floor. It was a little annoying and took away from our table conversation.
Overall it was a nice lunch and we will be back. I have been coming here for several years and always look forward to it.
This GRCC Run and student-cooked & served restaurant is a nice dining experience. The dinner menu is now a 3 course fixed price option. Lots of nice starters: a deconstructed roasted beet salad, a carbonara prepared table side, the long-standing mock eel which is fried shiitake mushrooms in a sticky sauce; entrees included a wonderful tasty pork dish, duck with apples in the accompanying side that everyone loved, chicken in a broth with noodles, 3 scallops with crispy crackers on a little bit of sauce. For dessert, we enjoyed the very sweet apples Normandy prepared table side and served with ice cream, the chocolate cake served with little bits of candies citrus which were the perfect accompaniment, and the poached pear.
Service was attentive and sincere.
Excellent, creatively prepared entree. Squeaked in with the last available of a popular lunch special. Attentive wait staff. Beautiful view overlooking the city. Prices are slightly higher than an average lunch, but these are no average lunches! Would highly recommend.
Our dining experience was exceptional. Our student waiter did a great job in explaining the menu and specials to us and was very attentive throughout the entire meal. The evening instructor, Holly, also introduced herself and asked us how our meal and experience was. The presentation and flavors of the food was excellent. I especially liked the pressed coffee with the chocolate cake at the end of our meal and the beers we tried made by GRCC students at the beginning of our meal. :)
We had had a wonderful birthday celebration for our dear friend who is soon to be 95 years old. Our sever, Jaison, did a great job answering our questions regarding the menu selections. The Apples Normandy prepared at our table was outstanding. I plan to try the Heritage for lunch.
Incredible food and amazing waitstaff. Everything that came out of the kitchen was nothing short of perfect and the wait staff was so attentive I felt like we were the only guests in the restaurant. We will definitely be going back for more date nights - you can’t beat a 5 course meal for $34 per person!
The wait staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. They were quick to service every need from drinks, to bread, to clearing items post-meal. The big surprise was the appetizer, which was an interesting blend of vegetables and a fruit accompaniment. The presentation of the appetizer was aesthetically perfect! The entree was prepared to perfection and, in fact, I ate everything on my plate. The dessert was a unique blend of sweet and delectable, however, the grapefruit, a little bit tart/sour, really made the whole meal memorable. I highly recommend that you take the time to visit this restaurant. I am certain that you will enjoy this culinary experience. I will return to the Heritage Restaurant very soon.
The experience I had at The Heritage was very professional! The seating, order taking, and service is over all was good. Though I could have done without the critiquing the working student where receiving from a supervisor. I understand it is there job to better the students performance though I’d prefer it not be next to my ear.
The food was delicious. The presentation of the food was truly a work of art! I would highly recommend you try this restaurant as you may find some combination that you have never imagined would pair together! I love that the student work as a team to provide outstanding service for the patrons. A great time all around.
Our daughter is a graduate of Secchia Center for Culinary Arts and we've been there several times over the past several years. Now I'm on the Birthday list and so came to use my certificate. The Heritage never disappoints. Nice atmosphere, great service, everyone is friendly, and the food is always fantastic! The students and faculty truly do a wonderful job.
Outstanding, imaginative menu at excellent price, although one meat entrée was not hot and the steak was a bit overcooked. Service was very friendly but student was still learning and a bit rough around the edges. Surprisingly, we weren't offered coffee with dessert. But it is a teaching restaurant, and we'll worth the experience; and the price can't be beat!
This isn't your typical restaurant, but a fine dining experience provided by students in a culinary arts program. The waitstaff was very friendly, helpful and informative as well as appealingly earnest if somewhat nervous (after all, they are being graded!). The menu selections were diverse, unique and appealing. I ordered beef tenderloin medium rare, and they delivered. My friend ordered the Drum Fish, which she said was only OK. My complaint is that my food was barely above room temperature. I wouldn't expect the center of a medium-rare piece of meat to be piping hot, but to have tepid pureed parsnips and sweet potatoes was a disappointment.
I went there for lunch. My lunch consisted of a "chopped salad", which wasn't a chopped salad, but a salad comprised of large pieces and the aforementioned beef tenderloin with pureed parsnips and a pureed sweet potato that didn't taste like sweet potato. There was Piri-piri sauce as a condiment. I was warned by the thoughtful waiter that the Piri-piri was hot, and it really was. Our water glasses were refilled throughout the meal.
A dessert cart was brought table-side and a lovely if nervous young student went through full descriptions of every item. They looked appealing, but since I avoid gluten and don't love sweets, I declined. In a "regular restaurant", I would have waived away the cart and the waiter before letting them launch into a description, but as this is a learning environment, I let him go through the presentation. Good job.
Free parking was available directly beneath the building, which was a plus.
An 18% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. We were informed that all tips go towards scholarships. Nice touch. My lunch came to $25. That was just for me, as we asked for separate checks.
It was a nice experience, but probably not one I would care to repeat.
